This is something I've been wondering about for a little bit now but sadly haven't seen anyone else mention at all.

The shows Avatar: The Last Airbender and its successor The Legend of Korra are set in a world of people with power over the four elements of Fire, Water, Earth and Air, with an all-powerful being known as the Avatar being the only one who can control all four elements and maintain balance and peace in the world, reincarnating every generation in order to do so.

Several months ago there was a rumour going around for Episode VIII that said Rey was the reincarnation of the Chosen One, that there must always be a Chosen One to keep balance between the Light and the Dark, the Ashla and the Bogan.
In Season Two of The Legend of Korra, we discover the origins of the Avatar and that they too must mainatin balance between the Raava (Light) and the Vaatu (Dark) to keep peace between the Human world and the spirits themselves.

We know from set photos that on Ahch-To there is a tree of some sort that may hold hidden meaning within the Force. In The Legend of Korra, there is also a tree that holds significance to the story, the Tree of Time which initially imprisons the Vaatu, and then allows Korra to regain her connection with her spirit self and power, and to which becomes a place she continually revisits.

Am I crazy or are there potential similarities, and if so, can we use this to be able to tell a possible route that the story of the Sequel Trilogy could go?
(PS- I highly recommend watching both Korra and its predecessor Avatar, they are some of the best, most mature modern storytelling.)

I would like to hear your thoughts, and I shall update this with any other connections I come across.

From some rumors that I've heard about Ep8 featuring the lore behind the first Sith and Jedi (came out almost a year ago, legitimacy of the rumors highly questionable), I got some really strong Korra vibes. Funny you mention it, too, and the tree thing is yet another similarity. Probably just a coincidence, but I don't mind! At least people won't be able to whine that Ep8 is just a rehash of Empire.

I found the ‘Church of the Force’ and ‘Air Acolytes’ to be a pretty similar concept. So there’s that.
This is where my mind instantly went after hearing this theory too. Which is why I also instantly disregarded it as the likely brain child of a random Korra fan.

    A very good point.
If the rumours are true and Rey is indeed a reincarnation, that also creates a link between Luke Skywalker and the character of Tenzin, where the son of the Chosen One/Avatar must essentially train his own father.
