I shared the following video of Comparison between Rey's training and Luke VS Kylo Ren fight in TLJ with @RockyRoadHux the other week:

NinjaRen: "That's cool, isn't it? On surface level, it’s just seems like he uses those beautiful images to enrich the look."
RockyRoadHux: "But this isn't how movie making works, right? A good director does nothing unintentional."
NR: "You're right. If you take a closer look, it suddendly becomes clear that RJ wanted to show us the parallelism between Rey and Kylo..."
RRH: "... and he also wanted to prepare us for the final encounter: Luke vs Kylo."
NR: "I know, right? It’s amazing how Rian implemented those."
    RRH: “Yes! Exactly."

Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. Foreshadowing often appears at the beginning of a story, or a chapter, and it helps the reader develop expectations about the upcoming events. - Wikipedia

The Last Jedi uses this technique quite A LOT and you really have to admire Rian for that. Because it takes a lot of careful planning to set up and then to let them pay off successfully.

Now let's look at some examples:

    1) Luke facing the First Order:
LUKE FS 1.jpg TLUKE FS 2 .jpg

    2) Leia foreshadowing Holdo’s Sacrifice:
LEIA FS 1.jpg LEIA FS 2.jpg

    3) The Split Rock and Snoke’s Manner of Death:
REY FS 1.jpg REY FS 2.jpg

    4) Kylo and Rey’s Force Projections and Luke’s Demise:
KYLO FS 1.jpg KYLO FS 2.jpg

But RJ wasn't the first to use this technique - foreshadowing was always a hallmark of Star Wars!

George Lucas consistently used foreshadowing as a technique to clue audiences in as to what would happen later on in the film. It’s a narrative technique that lends a poetic quality to a work of fiction.

One famous bit of foreshadowing happens in The Empire Strikes Back. Luke is trapped upside down in an ice cave and he’s about to be eaten by a yeti monster. He then uses the force to snatch up his lightsaber, cut himself loose from the ice and slice off the yeti monster’s arm.

Maybe YOU know another foreshadowing - one we haven't mentioned yet?

Yes, I do like the foreshadowing in TLJ. Particularly "The effort would kill you" bit - it's a nice, subtle explanation of Luke's death. However, I'm not entirely convinced Rey's lightsaber practice bit is intentional foreshadowing. Could be coincidence, it's hard to tell.

awesome thread! there's also foreshadowing (or echoes) from TFA to TLJ. things like:

Ren saying: You need a teacher! echoed by Luke to Rey in TLJ
Ren saying: will you help me? echoed by Rey in TLJ: I'll help you.
Ren saying: you're so alone, echoed in TLJ: you're not alone/neither are you.

and there is foreshadow in TLJ for ix no doubt.
most obviously in Hux's death stare at the end.

Here's one I didn't pick up on until recently:

Luke's decision to let Rey confront him on the island without returning violence to match hers, letting her play out her rage and frustration... foreshadows exactly what Luke does with Ben on Crait.

My favorite is the laser sword line, because i'm picturing the force laughing at Luke like this:

I don't think that can be considered "real" foreshadowing, more like poetry. Foreshadowing is a warning of what is to come in the future. Yeah, it's subjective, but in my opinion these lines don't tell you the future.

An example of "real foreshadowing" IMO would be the following exchange in TFA:

Rey: "What are you gonna do?"

Han Solo: "Same thing I always do. Talk my way out of it."

    *Chewie disagrees*

Han Solo: "Yes, I do! Every time." (this line is the foreshadowing part)

=> Han dies trying to talk his way out with is son.

I would say Hux trying to kill Ren is foreshadowing IF Hux is betraying the Supreme Leader in IX. But we can't say that yet. Foreshadowing is usually set up and payed off in the same movie or book.

That's definitely foreshadowing and also a parallelism between Kylo and Rey.

just when i was beginning to think that i'd seen TLJ too many times this last year.. somebody shows me something that i hadn't noticed..
    wow!

it'll be interesting to revisit this subject shortly after ep IX has released and we've all chewed through a few viewings.. i bet there's more foreshadowing in TLJ that we aren't aware of yet.

    great thread @NinjaRen & @RockyRoadHux ;)

One of the reasons TLJ is so great. So much subtle direction and storytelling. I really feel for people that got angry because of something in the film not fitting what they wanted. They have really missed out on the depth of TLJ creativity. The dark side clouds everything.

it's foreshadowing in the sense that Rey does need a teacher (but we don't listen to Ren because he's the villain).
same thing with will you help me: Ben asks for help, rejects it from Han, later he'll accept it from the next pretty girl who offers.
also with the loneliness: he uses it as a weapon against her in TFA, but is forced to admit he feels the same.

i would also say that all three set-ups result in reversals (and some, like the help me one, are double reversals), which can be pretty difficult to pull off.

foreshadowing in a trilogy, if it's well-done, is going to follow from the first episode to the last.
it's part of the fabric that binds the overarching story if the writers are paying good attention to what they're doing.
you don't see a lot of this in Nolan's TDK trilogy, for example, (and very clumsy attempts in the OT) because those movies were never meant to be trilogies at first. on the other hand, you see this all over the place with the MCU because all those movies were crafted to replicate/sequelize/intersect from the get go.
that doesn't automatically make the MCU better, it just means it has generally stronger continuity threads than something that wasn't designed for the long haul.

the ST, contrary to what some people believe, was designed as a trilogy. the fight between Ren and Hux that began in TFA is going to culminate in IX. if it's just abandoned as a thread, then i would say i have some reservations about the writing.

I always admired how the Star Wars movies use forshadowing in and between the different movies. And it's a tradition that both TFA and TLJ obviously have adapted. The lines about "The effort would kill you" and the lazer sword line are both very good. I also enjoyed seeing the visual foreshadowing examples you brought up. I know RJ as a filmmaker isn't exactly universally loved around here, but I really like all the small details he puts in his movies. The kind you have to kind of think about or discuss to appreciate.

It's pretty clear from Kylo Ren and Hux's dynamic in the end of TLJ that something will go down there.

I forgot to mention something here. Kylo dropping this piece of knowledge means that Luke must have known that doing this will kill him. When he showed up on Crait he knew he sacrificed his life and that this is his final act. Powerful stuff...

he knew he was saying goodbye to his sister, but also reassuring her that he would be with her, always.
that's the beauty of his parting words: "no one's ever really gone". he's referring first to Ben, then to Han, and finally to himself.

What I love the most about this scene is Kylo's realization what Luke is doing. That shock in Ren's face. He knows that power and he knows what this means. He can't kill Luke anylonger and thus he can't let his past die. This is really powerful stuff...

if you really want your noodles twisted with this foreshadowing stuff, then pay close attention to Luke's face when he watches Rey practicing with the Saber.
it's almost like.. he's seeing something more than a young force user swinging a saber around. almost like he's watching those saber twirls and 'knows' something about what's coming.

    Na supa.
I wanted to choose "Yes" in the poll and I missed the right button. The whole statistics are wrong now.

    Cool thread!

    Poor Ren.
If you consider Luke's words to Ren during their duell in VIII as one huge "forshadowing" summary for some of the events that will haunt him in IX.. (beside his troubles with his loyal best mate Hux).. Good Night Ren (=EPIX title) :D

    There are many in TFA;

-Lor San Tekka foreshadows Kylo's identity: "The First Order rose from the Dark Side, you did not".
-The power of Chewie's bowcaster is foreshadowed in Tokedana.
-Maz Kanada telling Rey to embrace the force and Rey embracing it in her duel with Kylo.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 21, 2019, Original Post Date: Jan 21, 2019 ---
    Also in TFA:

    - The island Kylo mentioned during the interrogation foreshadows Luke's island.
    - Kylo turning towards Rey in the force back foreshadows her final confrontation with Kylo.

    In TLJ:
-Rey says the force "makes things float" and in the end she makes the cave's rocks float.
