    ...or even better:
Luke: "... It's not about lifting rocks."
=> Rey saves the Resistance by lifting rocks.

    But yeah, you're right.

This isn't a foreshadowing in TLJ, but it "foreshadowed" one of the plots in that movie:

Which leads to the question: why the Empire didn't pursue this?

Well clearly they did, because by the time of TLJ we see it get used.

Another foreshadowing- Luke's "crashed" X-wing in the waters of Ahch-To. It gives hope Luke could leave the island.

    mcuiq0mfby401.jpg

But Luke would have to make some major repairs to his ship first if he ever decides to leave.

    star-wars-the-last-jedi-luke-skywalker-x-wing-door-1068848.jpeg

Turns out he used one of the X-wings S-foils to modify his door "The S-foil is part of the wing structures that open and close on the starfighter, based on if the pilot has put them in flight or attack modes" Wookieepedia

This could be seen as a foreshadowing that Luke will leave the island, but perhaps just not as expected- another case of subverting our expectations.

Sometimes it takes decades to make a technology actually work, you know.

    Here another foreshadowing?

Luke: "What do you know about the Force?"
Rey: "It's a power the Jedi have that lets them control people and... make things float."
Luke: "Impressive. Every word in that sentence was wrong..."

    Later in the movie:

Ren: "The Resistance is dead! The war is over! And when I kill you, I will have killed the last Jedi!"
Luke: "Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong..."

Or more like poetry? You decide! Haha!

I don't know - my take on it is that at the time of Rogue One it is at best nothing more than a research project. They haven't actually figured out how or even if it can be done yet. Also, that data tape Jyn found in the archives was destroyed along with the rest of the Scarif base.

Of course, one would presume that the research facility is elsewhere, and that it has its own records, but approximately four short years later the Empire suffered something of another setback - a major one at that - which I'm sure would have put a halt to that project. And I don't think four years is much time in research terms.

Then, as TFO rises in power, at some point they reopen the research and finally find a way to do it.

Also, TLJ is only the first time we see hyperspace tracking being utilised on screen, but it doesn't mean they haven't already been using it before then. It is also perhaps only the first time anyone in-universe figures out that it is being used and that it exists, but the TFO may well have been using it for slightly - or considerably - longer.

Side note: I'd like to know what Luke was thinking when he put the ship in the water. Especially, during his training he couldn't lift it out.

It's the Empire. Even George said it was a bit of a stretch that it took them 20 years to build the first Death Star. I suppose there were many attempts at sabotage. (*not just R1*)

Meh.. what does George Lucas know about it...? (r2-d2)

20 years doesn't seem an unreasonable amount of time to build a Death Star to me. I'd say it's actually quite a quick turnaround!

Anyway, Rogue One establishes that there has been 'setbacks'.

Wow, that's a good one! I never paused long enough in that scene to notice the positioning of the calligraphy pen relative to the lightsaber.

    Having said that...

At the end of 'Rogue One' the Tantive IV flees Scarif and escapes with the Death Star plans on board.

Then 'A New Hope' opens with the Tantive IV arriving at Tatooine with the Empire somehow in hot pursuit. How did they do that?

I've sometimes wondered how the Empire happened to be there chasing the rebels in that opening scene, especially considering what we later learn about hyperspace. Perhaps 'Rogue One' foreshadows much earlier than we think!

(Of course there could be another explanation - the rebels stupidly only made on hyperspace jump to get there and the Empire had calculated where they were heading)

Ben's lightsaber is another one. It just goes to show much effort is put into these films that the majority don't even notice.

I just assumed it was symbolism and that he didn't consciously put it there. The X-wing in the water is just a symbol of Luke's connection with the Force. On Dagobah he can't lift it, on Ach-To he refuses to lift it. Each time, there is a tenuous connection with the Force.
