Predicting Rogue One's negative criticism

Discussion in 'Rogue One' started by Ammianus Marcellinus, Aug 8, 2016.

?

Which negative criticism is Rogue One most likely to receive?

  1. Political Correctness (PC): i.e. in a year of elections everything that is slightly left or liberal

  2. Sexist critique: "mary sue", forced feminism, any critique centred on the gender of the female lead

  3. Racial critique: "white people are bad guys", "this or that actor is an affront to his ethnicity"

  4. Genre critique: "this Star Wars is exactly the same as episode ../ or this particular war movie"

  5. Feeling: "I liked some parts of it, but it just doesn't feel like Star Wars"

  6. Comparison: "I'd rather watch/ I liked this movie better"

  7. Line delivery and acting performance: "this line wasn't very good" - the critic says

  8. Plot staples: "the story doesn't make sense"/ "the plot is convoluted"

  9. Cinematography: "I don't like shaky cams"

  10. Other

After seeing the new trailer I think its safe to say the reshoot stuff was overblown and this is going to be much better than a lot of people anticipate.

Easily. I think what happened there was that Rogue One overall did a much better job of keeping things under wraps compared to TFA, and then the only thing that people were hearing was that re-shoots are needed. Andwhen there's only one big piece of news to talk about, it's going to get blown out of proportion.

Everything of what you've signed is a potential critic by the fandom, which is pretty divided.

I don't think the critics will love this movie as much as TFA (which was one of the best reviewed movies of 2015). For many reasons, I continue to see Rogue One as a fan-service movie, even if it looks amazing. What Abrams did better, was that he tried to expand the fandom: TFA was not a movie "for fans": it was for fans, for not fans, for new fans, for old fans, and for people who simply love a certain kind of cinema. Will Rogue One have a wide target as TFA had? I don't know. So, I call it: the critic will not love this movie as much as TFA, but perhaps fans will fall in love instantly, because it's clearly a movie for SW fans, with everything they love about SW, Vader in primis.

Don't underestimate Asia and China especially: whenever chinese actors appear in a movie like Star Wars, the movie is bound to break box office records.
However, my mom's reaction on the phone explains it all: "Wow, it looked great, but where are Rey and Finn?".

I think the biggest criticisms will be about retroconning the new canon, the general Disney is killing SW nonsense and the idea that trying to show ethnic diversity in the GFFA is somehow bad/clumsy/tokenistic

Same here. I mean after December 16, I will be definitely more excited about Episode VIII but right now to bring something back from before ANH sounds like a good thing.

Rogue One will serve as the movie-canon launch point for various religions within the GFFA, both light and dark. For whatever reason, Disney is keeping the Jedi at the forefront of the light side (church of the force followers, basically worship Jedi) but is intent on replacing the Sith (while riding DARTH Vader's cape-tails to promote the Standalone, but I digress...) who have wreaked havoc upon the galaxy for thousands of years.

I am much more excited about Rogue One than I am to see Episode 8....

Greetings Rieekan. As you are a moderator I decided to ask you a question. Can I blast everybody with negative quotes from now on without angering any of you moderators? I have been in the Cantina for quite a while now and right until this moment I have yet to give out a single negative quote to any of my fellow members no matter how heated the debate might get yet I am really starting to feel that many people are being unfair and blasting my posts with negative quotes when these people are not even a part of the conversation. Where is the fairness in the Cantina? Where's the fun in dabating with fellow members when people try to force you to be a darn zombie and go with the flow cause you can't think differently than the rest? Look at all the negative quotes I got from the members Mcbee and from Darthpilkington and not even once have they even written in the post or debated with me.
    2016-08-13 01_20_39-Capture.png
Is it ok then that I just pass someones post and if I don't like the title he put or if he thinks Fett is cool and I disagree I can just troll him with negative quotes? I ask this because in the spirit of fairness I do hope that from this day on, when I bombard everyone with negative quotes as they do me, the moderators will be ok with this. There are even members that have begun to troll my post and tend to disagree with everything I say so can I do likewise and blast them with trolling quotes from here to kingdom come? I have done my best to be a friendly and respectable member here on the Cantina and I have asked fellow members for forgiveness if I have offended them in any way but everyone has their limits and it's really starting to suck that I can't say a single thing that others don't agree on without the swarms buzzing in and attacking. I have to love TFA because everyone loves it, I have to love the Rogue One trailer because that's what everyone wants, I have to hate the prequels because most people here hate them and look out if I say otherwise cause it's Revenge of the Trolls! Am I dealing with grown ups or are these a bunch of little kids that can't have a conversation with someone that doesn't agree with them? I'm getting tired of debating with people in one post and then these same people follow my other posts and blast away the negative quotes for no other reason than I having disagreed with them on another un related post and it has really gotten out of hand.

There have been users who have literally blasted me with negative ratings as well for literally no reason since, in my opinion, negative ratings are for something inappropriate or something like that but unless it's literally harassment, I think you should be fine...after all, it's all part of the game

No, that would be against the rules and regulations. The last thing we need is another rating war.
Did you talk to themin a private conversation about their reasons? Sometimes it helps and sometimes you at least know why.
Ok, here is a thing. I see two red negative ratings, the Kylo symbol is neutral like disagree. You can check the quality of the ratings on your profile page.
Pretty sure the mods and Staff won't be cool with this.

So we will look into it, and check back later. This will take some time.

About negative ratings, me and @Alex Sebire were talking about this and I think I suggested that to him as being a neutral icon so it's good to know that officially

So, here's the thing about movie critics, and I don't mean to be offensive to the OP @Ammianus Marcellinus in any way as I have been enjoying this thread (when it remains on topic) but.... does anyone really care what the critics say, or give their opinions that much weight at all? I think you even seemed to imply this point as well in your thread intro.

To me, being a movie critic is like being a tabloid headline writer; you say whatever you can to get the most attention. I'm sure personal agendas are put ahead of the actual film review, and yes I do believe there are some reviewers who take their job to heart, but to me it's mostly a joke. A bandwagon sport. Recently, look at what happened with Suicide Squad: slammed to the ground by reviewers, but overall a smash box office hit.

My point is that people are going to see what they want to see, at least I hope people still take time to think for themselves and not let others make their decisions for them. We shouldn't be told what we like and what we don't like. And even in the worst reviewed movies there can be some redeeming qualities. Of course every single film isn't going to interest every single person, but that in itself doesn't make it a bad film. And even bad reviews garner attention.. after all, "any press is good press." Not really sure what I'm even trying to get at other than the movie critic profession bugs the ever loving sith out of me.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox now, apologies for the rant lol. I'm just so excited for this movie and I know, like this thread says, there's going to be a bunch of negative reactions for all the wrong reasons. Can't we just sit back and be entertained, for a change?

To be frank. I don't really care what the movie critics say either. Though I am proud and feel satisfied when they applaud a movie I liked, but I also don't really care when they don't. The poll revolves around the topic of audience response: the people who post their comments in every comment section ranging from the review section of the IMDB to Youtube. It is also naturally meant to poke a bit of fun at the negative nitpicking of Star Wars movies in general by a very....very vocal yet ridiculously small section of the audience. It is to anticipate their response to Rogue One. Placing the most likely criticism they will use to trash Rogue One, in a poll months before the movie is actually out, is also 'good sport' by the way. When the movie is out, we can use the poll above as a bucketlist. :)

The thread and poll were not intended as a forum for people to vent their personal complaints and worries about Rogue One.

Well said. Totally agree with you, there is way to much nitpicking! I guess they need to find something to be upset about... some people just enjoy being angry, i suppose!

See, I just want to be entertained. Sometimes really bad movies entertain me, sometimes really good movies don't. There are so many variables involved in whether I enjoy a movie or not, and lots of them don't even have anything to do with whether the movie was good or not, and are more to do with me and how I am experiencing it.

I've always been a person who likes to make their own mind up about things anyway, and generally don't really give a stuff what critics or others have to say. If it's a good movie, great. If not, then at least I can bag it with authority, lol. You gotta go to know...
