I’ve just finished reading Leia: Princess of Alderaan (such a good read!!) and it once again piqued my interest in the hidden parentage of Luke and Leia – more specifically, Padme (amidala)

The hints to her within the novel are so well handled, especially with
    Panaka
, and it got me thinking – what was the official reason/cause of Padme’s death cascaded to the Galaxy? She had her funeral on Naboo with thousands of mourners, but what were they told? What were her parents told?

I know the medical droid listed COD as “she lost the will to live” – but surely they didn’t run with that to the entire Galaxy?

Interested to hear thoughts, or a concrete answer.

I thought the "official explanation" was that she was assassinated by rogue Jedi, but that might just be Legends now. Even with the propaganda circulated by the Empire, I still don't think that lands.

I think a better "explanation" would be to say that she was assassinated by Separatists.

What I've always wondered is, who does the public (and her family) think the father of her baby is? Surely they weren't told it was Anakin Skywalker?

(Actually, this makes me wonder... what does the public think happened to Clone Wars hero Anakin Skywalker?)

I believe the message was that Anakin was killed during Order 66 at the Jedi Temple?

This is very intriguing. If Anakin hadn't gone to the dark side/Padme hadn't died, it makes me wonder what their lives would have been like. You can imagine the scandal that would occur if news got out a Senator had children with a Jedi. Anakin would be excommunicated, and the Senator would retire, but they would at least be happy.

In the Revenge of the Sith Visual Dictionary, which may or may not be considered canon now, I believe it mentions that she was killed by rogue Jedi, as far as the public knows, and that Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Bail were very careful to ensure she looked pregnant for her funeral so that no one, not even her parents, would try to find the children.

But, like someone else pointed out a few posts above, I'm curious to know who people assumed the father was. I mean, did Padmé's parents even know that she and Anakin were married? I believe one of the reference books specifically mentioned that Obi-Wan and Yoda did not want her family to know that Luke and Leia had been born.

I imagine there was a big cover up by Sheev and his cronies.

I never read many of the books, but I remember Matthew Stover specifically writing in his "Revenge of the Sith" novel, that the illusion of Padme's pregnancy was purposely done to keep Vader and Palpatine away. I would also imagine, given her Senate status, that her marriage would be described as to a fellow Senator, much like Anakin having "died" during the Jedi Purge.

But this just brings up the age-old question, of what's considered proper canon now and why. Its a safe bet that everything written to take place after "Return of the Jedi" is now Legends...but what sense does it make for Disney to revoke the prequel-related material? Were they really so desperate, to have complete control over the franchise? It makes them sound quite a bit like the Empire, to be honest.

They didn't revoke Prequel material. It's not like they wiped it clean. J.J. even said it will be referenced. And I'm sure there will be more things to come involving the prequel era.

It really annoys me that such important information about a major character weren't explained in the movie, at all. What is the average viewer who doesn't read tie-ins expected to believe? To have her appear pregnant at her funeral without explanation and in full view of everyone in the final montage was really... lazy.

The thing I've been wondering about Padme is what she saw in Anakin in AOTC? She goes from neutral feelings towards him to deeply in love. But what has Anakin done to earn her love?

Her death has always seemed like a last minute idea. Especially given the fact that Princess Lea spoke of her dying when she was young in ROTJ.

I really love where this post went. I have never thought about some of the aspects of her death, especially who the general public thought the father of her children where. The novel did a good job of hinting that some people thought it was Obi Wan, and Palpatine made sure to pass that along to Anakin.
