This is an outstanding post. Star Wars is fine. It's just a huge IP and that means there's millions and millions of people with opinions about Star Wars.

Are you doing some sort of social study? Why must you comment on how others chat about things on here? Are you trying to moderate this web site?

My backlash is so huge. It makes other backlashes seem small.

I still remember that story that ran on this site some time after Last Jedi hit theaters. SWNN put out a poll for people to rate the movie on a scale of 1-10. One dude voted like 800 times (do not remember the exact amount but it was ludicrously high) and gave it a 1 star. So that is the kind of stuff that makes me question that the backlash it is a huge amount of the fandom. There is a bunch of people who do not like but that sure is not the majority.

Yeah, apparently some dude from Australia tried to skew the poll. And you are right to question how big the backlash is based purely on site polls or places like metacritic & rotten tomatoes, as the results of which can be easily manipulated. That said, the fact there was a backlash of any kind definitely makes it known the film was divisive to some extent, and likely the folks are Lucasfilm have noticed it, and we will see an impact of some kind stem from it.

I think the whole question of a backlash is complicated. I've been very critical of TLJ, but I still want to love SW and have even contributed to talking points about the ST and IX, and I still ask questions about TLJ and am trying to better understand it, to find a way to make peace with it. All I'm saying is that the "backlash" is multi-varied, and changes from moment to moment. There are some people, likely small, who've completely ruled out seeing IX due to TLJ. Some may have due to Solo or a combination of both or as far back as TFA or RO. Some have kept the door open to the possibility, but it isn't likely they'll go. Some have it open a bit wider at about 50/50. Many are going to go watch it regardless of TLJ, but again, it could be for different reasons as some of those could have hated TLJ but just want to keep giving SW a chance, JJ a chance, or just to see Luke Skywalker again, or how they handle Leia. Some will go due to their love or tolerance of TLJ.

The funniest thing is, some of these people may be sitting on these points today, and change that point by the time IX comes out, either based on comments made by LFL or teaser trailers and the like. People could get fired/hired/promoted/demoted and that could affect the fandom. The coverage of it could change if it doesn't meet certain standards. It could get bad initial reviews, or great ones with some minor spoilers that get mixed reactions.

Trump can endorse it and half of Americans will then stay completely away from it lol.

All this to say I think the problem we're having putting our thumb on a number, is that some could dislike it and still go for reasons... some could have liked it enough but not go for reasons. We know it's divisive, but to figure out how divisive, we'll never really know, but we will get inklings based on ticket sales, which won't be 100% accurate themselves, but it will determine if they continue along this current formula or not. In the end, I think this topic question has more to do with that then if it matters about the size of any backlash, the question is more, do fans, casual and otherwise, like this direction enough to warrant more movies like it?

Personally, I think it will. The fandom is big enough to accommodate all sorts of fans with a wide range in viewpoints and preferences in their movies.

We'll know in 11 months or so.

Yeah, that kind of thing is fascinating to me because it goes to show someone who we can assume has an opinion the feel strongly for, would likely publicly say that the "majority" of people feel the same way, but then goes on to feel the need to try and cheat the answers anyway.

That's not confidence in your opinion, that's manipulation to try and make your side look stronger than it is.

(obligatory "this doesn't apply to everyone who dislikes the movie" disclaimer)
