C-3PO was specifically built to be a protocol droid for human cyborg relations, but he's not programmed to understand human to human emotions. He even says so himself. Both 3PO and K-2SO still feel like droids because their so called "emotions" are not fluid and genuine, they are based on statistics and calculations. In other words: They don't behave like real people because they are actually not sentient, therefore they are not capable of thinking the way L3 does. This is an important aspect when writing a droid character, and L3 was written as a parody of a human activist and it just didn't work. It felt like a woman trying to act like a robot.

Negative waves... why don't you say something positive for a change... I love Star Wars too much to be labeled just a fan....

uh, yes it was. The terrible dialog and acting was the icing on the cake. RLM literally took apart PT and that was one of the things they slammed Episode 1 on. The reason i'm only referring them because PT haters parroted them non-stop and acted like they were the bible for the PT hate. I remember reading and being involved with many discussions about people arguing about the purpose of Trade Federation and Trade agreements. Go back and re-read the PT forums, you'll see tons of people bashing PT for the politics.

There's no doubt people complained about the politics in the PT, but let's be fair... the movies weren't good so people complained about most of it. In hindsight the politics don't bother me. The rough outline of the story is fine, but it's just the execution of the story that's the problem.

That's a fair point and I was actually one of the few brave souls back then who actually defend the PT and I still will. I'm just tired of this negativity for 10+ years about the PT and i'm still seeing the same type of hate in 2018 and beyond. Only difference, there are more places to have their opinions heard and people are making millions on YouTube to help drive the hate and other nonsense. It's honestly gotten to the point where its hard to separate people who legitimately dislike something from trolls. I'm honestly starting to be convince based on how people are reacting over the years, that Star Wars haven't been "good" since 1983 or 1980 for some people. It's hard to accept now when people say that PT felt closer to the OT (to justify their dislike of TLJ or the ST), when you literally been reading and hearing the exact opposite for 10+ years especially if you were one of the ones who actually defended the PT back in the day. I also don't recall user reviews of RT being "scientific" data pre-2015. I rarely ever heard it being used in arguments even back when we were auguring between PT and the OT.

I know I'm only 30 but I was too young to experience the OT in theaters but was introduced to the OT on VHS pre-special editions but old enough to experience the PT in theaters as well to see the evolution of the internet as I had MySpace before it got mainstream and having a Facebook when people who could join had to have an .edu email address. I guess I'm in a weird generation where I can see OT and PT in equal light.

Lol not even close these days. After adpolocypse, they make dozens of dollars, not even thousands, and definitely not millions. The people on Youtube still making content do so because that's what they want to do.

I went with, I would watch again in theatre, 4/5 and, I am interested in a part 2 (I don't think I would have ever said that beforehand).

Sorry folks, but I gave it a 2/5. I went in with an open mind (I love love LOVED R1) but I just never got into it.... and I know I'm in the minority on this.

    Likes:
    • L3; thought she was a breathe of fresh air and really thought plugging her nav system into the Falcon was a clever move. Thought her death was the most poignant moment in the whole pic.
    • Glover as Lando -- I immediately believed he was a younger Lando with no problem whatsoever. Perfect tone, cadence and swagger.
    • A couple of the exchanges between Han & Lando that foreshadow events in TESB.
    • Chewie was great; Bettany as Vos was really good.

    Dislikes:
    • I was never able to buy Alden as Han (as much as I tried). He was always "the guy playing a young Han Solo." Really took me out of the movie.
    • Somewhat the same with Woody Harrelson. I just kept seeing Woody H., not a character named Beckett. Plus I thought that character itself was weak.
    • This felt more like a Mission: Impossible movie to me than a SW flick. This was probably my biggest gripe. Yes, i know it was a heist film, but the plot itself was thin to the point of non-existent. Dare I say I was bored? in the face of train robberies and Kessel runs? Unfortunately yes, I was.
    • How he ... acquired (?) ... the name Solo. *Eyes rolling.*
    • It dragged on and on. Seriously, this should have been a two-hour movie, not 2:20 or 2:30 or whatever it was. At the one hour mark I looked at my watch and thought, "I don't really want to sit through the rest of this one." That ain't a good sign.
    • The lighting. I don't know if this was a theatre thing but I've heard others complain about it too. Man, it was soooo dark (on an already dingy palette) that I couldn't see the contrast in many scenes -- to the point I felt I was missing some of the finer points and fun (easter eggs & whatnot).
    • Alden & Emilia didn't have much on-screen chemistry.
    • By the time we got to the Enfys Nest stuff at the end I was checked out mentally so I don't really have thoughts on that subplot. Seemed a little forced from what I remember.

I don't consider myself in one camp or another in terms of Lucas SW films vs. Disney SW films. I've enjoyed and not enjoyed both, so my thoughts on Solo are totally independent from "a side." I won't see it again in theatres but I'll give it another shot when it hits Nelfix or wherever. As for a sequel: Even though I didn't care for this one, I'd watch a sequel in hopes that the story would be more interesting (it couldn't get any less for me). Anyway, sorry to be a killjoy ... Looking forward to IX!

    +1

Just saw it the other night for the second time. Damn, with the blast shield down, I couldn’t even see. But all those scenes on Corellia and the sabbac den where way to dark.

But on the other hand, I give now a 4/5. I could enjoy it 0.5 points more than at the first viewing.

What bothered me the most was that the film was almost entirely desaturated of color.

the muted palette didn't bother me as much as the lack of contrast, but on second viewing, neither bothered me much.

5/5 - ...will see it again... - ...want a sequel...

I've watched it just once, but I was paying so much attention that not a single Youtube review could impress me with any Easter Egg I haven't spotted. Gonna watch it this weekend once and maybe one more time in a few weeks...

Yes, it's hard not to impress SW fan, but a film like this can impress even casual viewer WHO HAVE NEVER WATCHED any of Star Wars films!

Also, I think it contains the biggest amount of other media references....

I had an issue with the lighting but I'll see it again to pay more attention to it. I had the same issue with Black Panther when I saw it the first time but the second viewing it was beautiful. Sometimes it's the particular theater or 3D presentation that doesn't allow the color to show through.

Yeah, I’m blaming the old projector in this backwater cinema and not the cinematography. As @Jayson has put it perfectly somewhere else, it has to be dark (https://thecantina.starwarsnewsnet....ally-having-an-action-film.54903/#post-505202). But if details get lost on the 3D screening, it should have been a better experience in a theater with more brilliant technique.

But who cares, gonna go there again in 7 hours for the 3rd time. ;)

You know; I can't speak for 3D, now that you mention it.
I saw it in 2D because it's Star Wars, and I always see Star Wars in 2D, but now that I think about it, I think 3D of this would be pretty bad.

I haven't seen or read anything that suggests that the production shot anything with 3D in mind, and I know the 3D was post-production without Howard or Young.

    Stick to 2D.

    Cheers,
    Jayson
