Just putting this out there to see people's responses but does anyone think we will ever see an R rated Star Wars movie? Obviously it would have to be one of the anthology films but I would love to see one. It's already established that there's gangsters, drugs and a lot of violence in the universe etc. Post up any ideas of what you'd like to see and what your thoughts are!

I can't vote because I'm not sure. I guess it would depend on what made it R Rated. The options you listed, though (gangsters, drugs and lots of violence), don't sound particularly appealing to me.

Personally, I don't really see the need for an R rate...
We already have plenty of violence.. Blaster shots, chopped limbs...
What would the R rating add? Profanity? For that they can just make up some GFFA idiom and keep it PG13...

I guess it would be hard to vote without knowing the concept itself. I haven't really given i much thought was hoping others might post some potential ideas. I know Star Wars has always been a family film but I feel as if the universe created is so strong that theres room to have a gritty R rated film (providing its done well).

Gangsters, spice, smuggling, disintegrations, Twi'lek strip bars, bounty hunting, gambling, violence...

All of these things are already in SW. It's not much of a jump to make it rated R.

I don't see what they could do to make it "R" rated. Other than adding some blood and gore and I don't think that's really needed. Unless they try to "sex" it up which again I don't think is needed.

I would watch one, but I don't think there should be one.

I honestly wouldn't want to go any darker than ROTS or Rogue One, so I don't think the rating is needed.

Yup! It's not something I would want, but I'd watch it out of curiosity.

I would love to see that. But I don't think it will happen. Not in the main saga story anyway...
But....all is not lost....we can always cosplay :D

Probably not anytime soon, if ever.. but if it does happen I nominate Alfonso Cuaron the one to take a stab at it.

As I mentioned in the thread on Ponda Baba in the OT forum, some of the stuff that Lucas considered for the first SW film would definitely garner an R rating. Ralph McQuarrie drew storyboards of a bare-breasted Leia during the Death Star escape, and other bits of violence were also meant to be much more graphic (things like Vader ripping off limbs during the Tantive IV attack). So I don't have a problem with an R-rated SW film in theory - the potential has always been there.

Done right, with the same level of intensity and unflinching verve as the best R rated films, it could really deepen the SW universe as a whole. After all, Batman received a huge shot in the arm from the darker works of the '80s onwards, like The Killing Joke, The Dark Knight, Arkham Asylum etc. I agree that the ingredients, as listed by the poster above, have always been there. It would just take the right creative team to handle everything.

A Darth Maul movie set before the events of Episode 1 would be perfect material for an R rated movie imo.

There should never be a Star Wars movie that children kids are barred from seeing.
