Artoo has been nearly non-existent in the ST, I really hope we see more of him. Not liking it much that he's been thrown under the bus for other, 'cuter' droids. I was hoping that R2 & BB8 would have scenes together and less BB8 and some other droid. At the very least, I hope we get a scene where R2 saves the day like in the earlier movies.

Yeah, I understood him not really being featured in The Force Awakens, but I think there were a few scenes where there was room for more R2-D2 in The Last Jedi. I’m not going to lie, though, it concerns me that we don’t see him at all in the trailer for The Rise of Skywalker, though. I obviously haven’t seen the movie yet, so it’s too soon for me to say anything with certainty, but I hate that they introduce D-O and show him in the trailer, and then have a shot with all the major heroes (including C-3PO, BB-8 and D-O) that excludes Artoo.

The only thing I can think is that maybe Leia goes off on her own in this film, and Artoo goes with her? And to be honest, I’m fine with that, but I still hate that Artoo has been pushed to the side for a good portion of this trilogy and I feel like if he goes with Leia, he’s still going to get the shaft because I can’t imagine they have that much footage of her, and probably even less (if any) footage of her with Artoo.

Regardless, I just hope Artoo gets some sort of boost in screentime and importance in this film. I’ve really loved the Sequel Trilogy so far, but one of the few (minor) gripes I’ve had with it is how criminally underused Artoo in particular is. I love BB-8, but I also really hate that he’s taken so much screentime away from the other two droids. Just lump all three of them together, like how Threepio and Artoo were both present for all the group’s adventures in the Original Trilogy.

I think it is safe to say that most of us feel like there has not been enough R2. It appears the 3pio is getting more time and I would find it surprising if R2 didn’t get more time too. However, I am a little worried since he was nonexistent in the trailer.

There was a rumor that R2 and 3PO have a really funny scene concerning 3POs memory. I hope that’s true and he gets more than one scene. His scene in TLJ with Luke was one of the best moments in the film for me. I guess R2 doesn’t sell toys anymore so we’re stuck with BB8. I think the pairing of R2 and BB8 is a missed opportunity. There would be plenty of big brother, little brother comedy potential.

He will probably have more screen time than we think. I do miss him being it more though.

I'd say R2 had a small role, in screentime, but a crucial one in TLJ, by being able to change Luke's mind, and he seemed pretty much decided on not getting back to the fight. In TFA, again R2 was key in helping reveal Luke's whereabouts. I'm pretty possitive he will have another key role in IX, as well.

So, if you count screentime I agree, but in terms of importance, R2 is always there to save the day. BB8 is now the droid star, and it seems consensual most like and even love it. I'm sure the kids love it. As for D-O, it's soon to tell. It's the toys thing, and Star Wars was always about the toys and kids, after all.

I am convinced R2 and Luke scenaristic treatments are parallel, each one mirroring the other. R2 was missing all TFA long and so was Luke.

I am deeply convinced LucasFilm fulfilled George Lucas's original dream (the Journal of the Whills) : R2 is the key to everything, as he is the ONLY protagonist who witnessed everything and remembers everything.

R2 almost not appeared in TFA, but his scene in TLJ was one of the best ever: that interaction with Luke showing Leia's hologram was pure emotion!

I like bb-8 a lot, and of course he is the main droid of this sequel trilogy, after all R2 already has six movies as "main" droid with C-3p0.

JJ should end the series with an after credits scene of R2 projecting all the films to an audience of Jedi Knights in a Jedi Temple with 3PO narrating the lines “and that’s the story of the legendary Skywalkers, which began over 100 years ago”. Perfect setup for a new trilogy.

The Rise Of Skywalker trailer actually shows very little in terms of scenes or shots. We all know Luke is going to be in there in one way or other but he isn't in the trailer either. If C-3PO has a larger role then R2-D2 likely does as well.

You really can’t base R2 on 3PO. TFA taught us that. It’s pretty clear R2 isn’t with our main cast, which means he’s probably with Leia (and Rose?) at whatever base they have. Not boding well. I’m pretty sure they don’t want a CGI R2 and he’s not easy to do action sequences with like BB8 is. Was at least hoping we get R2 in an X-Wing one more time.
