If they modeled Rey after Katniss, which is very possible, then she is certainly not a solo and my money on the skywalker kid becomes the only obvious candidate left.

 

What makes you so sure?

 

Part of the power and allure of Katniss is that she is entirely self made. She is the to quote the replacements "the son(in this case daughter) of no one." If Katniss, keep in mind I haven't read the books, is the daughter of the president through a secrete family affair, then the whole concept of her character changes. She is not self made. To me this is what makes Katniss powerful. Imagine Harry Potter if his father is really the enemy trying to kill him? It would ruin the whole concept of the character and the story.

The power of the self made character is that anyone in the audience can be that. People identity with them. If the protagonist is the prince so and so, then its really hard for the reader to relate because how many of us are princes? I don't know if that makes sense.

I'm not saying that Rey is not a solo, I'm saying that if they modeled her after Katniss then I think we will find out she is not related to Luke or Leia.

 

She strikes me as more of a Lisbeth Salander type, starts off as an independent woman and stays that way. Even down to the Grandpa figure she cares for before his death (Von Sydow)

 

Hmmm this is interesting don't get me wrong. But it defiantly feels like the far end of speculation.

 

Certainly an interesting comparison. There is nothing in her costume or dress to indicate that she is antisocial or anything like that. Also, I think it was Kennedy herself who drew the Katniss idea. However it is also worth noting that she is also not wearing white, the traditional color of the hero. See Luke's top compared to Vader. She is wearing earthy neutral tones. The Salander character does not dress this way, neither does Katniss for that matter, but her dress matches her surroundings at almost all times. She does not seek to really separate herself from her surroundings unless shes forced to.

 

Amazing insight! I'm mainly going on the speculation that she's socially isolated.

 

Are we on this again? They used those descriptions to cast more than one character. And if Rey was Luke's kid or Han/Leia's kid, you think that would be in the description? It's just to give a basic idea of personality traits - not plot points. Tens of thousands of people showed up for this open casting call which they used to fill minor roles as well.

 

Really you are sighting herself sufficiency as reaons she is NOT related to someone so self-assured they gave him the last name Solo.

 

The concept of the self-made person is ridiculous. What people really mean when they use that term is a independent person that takes advantage of every opportunity that they are given.

This is not what self made means. Self made means that everything a person has they gave themselves. Princes, Dukes, Princesses inherit thier position. Leia's position within the rebellion, was inherited because of her fathers position. Luke at the same age did not have opportunity. Katniss is nobody. Yes she takes advantage of the skills she has, we all do, that is not what self made means. A self made Billionaire is a person who worked and earned their billion dollars. Yes they took advantage of opportunities, but they were not given a 20 million dollar inheritance the rest of us don't have an turn that into a billion dollars. That person is not self made.
