As stated by GL the saga films are about the Skywalkers. If you want Radom people go watch R1. There is not much I can say that has not bin sed by others on this thread.

    It goes against GL.

It makes the Skywalkers less special.

It makes the Chosen One prophesy less meaningful.

It means the Skywalkers fail more then succeed.

It means their blood is cursed & prone 2 the dark.

It means no happy endings. Something I miss in Hollywood lately.

This begs the question: if the Force no longer needed the Skywalker bloodline, then why was Ben Solo force-sensitive in the first place? If the Force could make random people like Rey powerful force-sensitive, then surely it could stop people from inheriting that capability from their force-sensitive parents.

There's a debate about what the Force can do within untrained people in a story where the Force makes a baby with a woman by itself?

I think it's pretty much allowed that Rey could be just about anything and it wouldn't violate anything about the Force since it's done pretty supernatural things equal to many dieties already.
The Force can't spawn into someone and channel all needed intuition to figure their abilities out quickly with little effort, and little guidance from people?
Wow. What a stupid universal energy in a magical universe held together by its own very magic...
There are lesser gods who can do this in a snap of a finger and they can't even bind the universe...

The Force is a narrative mystical grab bag. Lucas made it relatable to multiple religous and magical concepts, and vaguely defined so that you could reach in and pull out anything that you need and just whip up some jazz hands and whisper, "Mysticism!"

It sure as heck wasn't designed to be the debate point of things being plausible or not. Funny enough...just the opposite.

The Force went from a vague feeling that makes hard torpedo shots possible, gives old men stomach cramps and headaches, and gives space swords a chance in laser pistol battles, as well as telekinesis and lightening to making its own baby who is subsequently beat down horribly by a guy who was just another guy who learned the Force the old fashioned way because he wasn't the Force incarnate...and there's a debate over what is and isn't possible via the Force?
Are we in Star Wars theoretical seminary?

    That all said...it's not done.
Why spend time getting excited and arguing over anything to do with Rey in this regard until the story is actually told? There's still another film and anything before then regarding her origin is still open to being finalized because the cave shows you fears, which may or may not be reality, and Kylo could be telling a lie or a truth.

    Anywho...
    Cheers,
    Jayson :)

Since I was Rey random from day 1, I'm not surprised. What surprised me is that they treated this like if it was a thing and finally the audience has no real answer or nothing to put the story forward.

Rey didn't remember her family who were unknown people --> Rey remembers her family who were unknown people. There are 40 minutes of the movie on this issue with nothing on the table after the reveal.

    Strange storytelling once more.

Can't wait to see they broom boy become the most powerful Sith Lord of them all. Choke his employers, slash those younglings, while screaming 'No' after an afternoon backyard sweeping session.

Can't wait for it, when master jedi and Sith Lord pop up like mushroom after rain.

Rey parentage is unresolved in EP VIII.
Of course she can be random .But film setting implies a lie and deception created by the dark side.
The more I watch film the more that story of 2 drunkard parents who sold Rey for liquor looks not just slight but actually a farce.
This is leaving more than enough space for JJ.Abrams to make Rey's parents focus again in EP IX.and "reconsider "Rey random approach.

I like Random Rey because it means heroes can come from anywhere. I also think it gives something to Rey's character that she doesn't find her place in the universe by looking to the past. Rey is special becuase Rey is Rey.

Rey being a Skywalker/Solo/Kenobi/Palpatine could have worked too, I'm sure, but I prefer it this way. It is also possible that they have more to say about it in episode IX, but the message of TLJ still works for me, even if Rey turns out to be less random in the end.

All of this",I wanted Rey from nowhere not aristocracy"is actually pointless mantra.
Because Skywalkers do originate from a Random chosen slave boy from nowhere, and original Lucas trilogies were absolutely polithically progresive already- a boy from nowhere,no one, ascended by his talents.Anakin.Luke also start as humble farmer boy,a working class, despite his heritage.
So in fact there is genuine fallacy in thinking that Rey random is fresh approach.
It would be repetition of Anakin Skywalker approach.

So now Jedi's can just upload Jedi skills through mind melds, no practice required? Convenient.

Look, I could have accepted Rey had some sort of memory block and she had been trained somewhere (whether Luke, Snoke idk) but her mind was blocked and she was ditched on Jakku because she was perceived as some sort of threat, but no one had the stomach to kill a little girl (or a play on a similar theme, but the fact that she had been trained). Then Kylo entering her mind either accidentally or intentionally broke that block and the skills she had learned as a kid came flooding back.

But uploading information? That wasn't suggested in the least and even if it was, it cheapens Jedi skills as now all she has to do is allow herself to be mind raped by Snoke or Luke so she can pick up all of their abilities. It's fantasy, but the idea is still kind of ridiculous, at least imo. That's not cannon either, so I'm guessing you're wrong, because it would kind of not work moving forward when Rey has apprentices (they can all learn what she knows in 5 minutes, no work required), but who knows, this trilogy seems to be sticking the finger up at logic for the sake of shock value, surprise reactions and some cheap form of creativity, so it's entirely possible that'll be their reasoning (not to mention cheap forms of misdirection, repetitively leading viewers to believe one thing, just to pull the carpet out later with no rhyme or reason). Again, my opinion.

If you enjoy this kind of thing, that's great. I'm not telling you why not to like it. But if you wonder why others don't, I'm explaining possibilities why that is from my perspective. SW isn't going away any time soon, so you don't need to be afraid they'll scrap things on the harping of the minority of vocal fans who dislike it. As stated, in many ways we envy you for your positive experience. I'd have rather walked out of theaters feeling it was $50 well spent.

Ben lives right next to Luke.
Luke flies a fighter in combat with no fighter training and rocks it.
There's a hole in the Death Star that goes all the way to the core and happens to be vulnerable to small craft flight.
Luke's aunt and uncle die right when he goes to Ben, so he doesn't die and also doesn't have to make a choice to go or stay and help his uncle.
The Force conceives Anakin so that he has no Father and is a super Force user - he's literarily evil Force Jesus.
The only place Luke gets shot is in his robotic hand.
Han somehow knows that Lando, who betrayed him, is in the cool club again and saves him.
The Force was just a feeling that you could use to make swords work in battles, feel planets die, and shoot torpedoes better with and then out no where it was telekinesis and lightning, and then later suddenly popped out a baby.
Luke fell through garbage shutes and happened to land one-handed onto an antenna and didn't immediately fall to his death.

    Welcome to Star Wars. :)

    Cheers,
    Jayson

This, why do people keep repeating the same nonsense? Star Wars was never about some aristocracy who had monopoly on the force. The Skywalkers where an exception and their origins where already humble. Almost all other jedi or sith in star wars have always been a nobody...

I think that The FORCE "call her" using the lightsaber. The FORCE needs a Jedi to bring balance to the FORCE.She is the answer for that and I believe that from the beginning Rey is a Jedi because she have the light with her.She is very special and she will bring the FORCE the balance it needs...:).

How does one bring balance to the force at this point? If she is Kylo's antithesis then by killing him she would create unbalance again, unless she sacrifices herself as well.
What's the point of someone creating balance if the force can now just balance itself by "awakening" Rey to be Kylo's antithesis?

Maz Kanata says pretty directly that the lightsaber calls to her, but i think your explanation would make more sense. We are used to the force calling to people and making them do things but not lightsabers. But it can also be explained by the new kyber-crystal lore, so it's no big deal to me.

She is a "tool" to bring balance to the Force. If Rey kill Kylo is True BUT it will not happen in this trilogy. She is the "tool" to bring balance to the FORCE IMO....:).

I think my friend that The Force use the lightsaber to show her her past and her future by touching it.Maz told Rey the story of that lightsaber. She reaction was scare and fear because she never feel and see a "Force Vision" in that way before. She told Maz...."I will never touch that thing again and never be a part of it".I believe that when Kylo told Rey in the Forrest...."You need a teacher.I will show you the way to The Force(the music change to Luke's theme)and Rey close her eyes and said..."The Force" she was "awake".In the TLJ she said it to Luke...."Something inside me is awake and I'm afraid of it.I don't know what it is and do with it"......For me....The Force is using special "ways" to bring balance to itself.

See the “Is Luke the father of Rey” thread from page 1 to find all the answers to these questions.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 26, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 26, 2017 ---
Myself and many others answered all these questions 2 years ago. It’s absurd to say they're problems now if “we” have already answered all this. Just take some time to read up with an open mind. What played out in TLJ was EXACTLY what was suggested by numerous members in this forum:

Rey’s parents weren’t remarkable. She got left for some reason. Her power wasn’t passed on to her - it was a reaction to Kylo Ren/awakening of the Dark Side.

It’s telling that pretty much everyone who was on board with the above, loved TLJ and embraced her story...

I'm happy with Rey Random, it's what I wanted all along. But I just realized something...If her parents were junk traders, how did she get that posh accent? What, did they go to the best schools before they went broke and alcoholic and sold their daughter for booze money? What exactly happened there? And Rey's accent in TLJ is "posher" than ever. GIVE MEH AN HONEST ANSAH!

My issue isn't necessarily that Rey is a nobody, it's that we were set up in TFA to believe they were someone only to be told 2 years later they don't matter. Obviously there's plenty examples of powerful force users without a family background (Yoda, Obi Wan, Qui Gon, Mace, Dooku, Sidious, etc) but their skill in the force is at least explained. All of those characters existed during the "prime" years of the Jedi/Sith and were trained in the force from the time they were children, but Rey is apparently more powerful than any of them with literally zero training. How much time elapsed from the beginning of TFA to the end of TLJ? A week? Are we supposed to just accept that Rey defeated Kylo, defeated the Praetorian guards, bested Luke in a stick duel, performed Jedi mind tricks, and lifted an avalanche of huge boulders from a cave all after just learning the force was a thing a week prior? We saw in ESB how difficult it was for Luke to lift a couple of small stones &i n AOTC Yoda seemingly uses all of his strength to lift a pillar, but Rey can lift a similarly heavy object with ease? Again, I don't care that her parents don't matter, I just feel like if that was going to be the case they could have been revealed in TFA. Otherwise it was a cheap way to keep fans in suspense.
