Crusade - Gotta love the dream team of Ford/Connery/Rhys-Davies/Elliott
    Raiders
    Doom
    Kingdom

Surprised to find some other Crusade fans here! Usually everyone seems to like Raiders best.

    1. Last Crusade (Sean Connery, the whole plot, and the elegant new themes by John Williams just make the film IMO)
    2. Raiders (no explanation necessary for the merits of this one)
    3. Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull on equal footing. Not bad, but definitely weaker.

I suppose I rate films 2 and 4 equally because they both suffer from their individual "weird" elements. Temple of Doom just didn't fit the tone of the series to me, and there was little warning that it would be a "dark" movie. And the way they backtracked to get to the tone of Raiders for Last Crusade (and even Crystal Skull) made it so that Temple of Doom is now the one "gloomy" Indiana Jones movie, and it just feels out of place to me. Maybe if they re-try the "dark and gloomy" stuff for Indy 5, I'll look at Temple of Doom in a new light.

Crystal Skull kept the more "approachable" tone of the first an third movies, but as we all know, we got flying saucers and nuke fridges. I didn't even mind the alien stuff per se, but I wish they had not been so explicit about it. Have them return the skull to its temple but leave the door open about whether the aliens actually exist. That would have been better to me. We didn't need the many skeletons morphing into one, staring at Cate Blanchett, and leaving in their flying saucer. That wasn't Indiana Jones to me.

TOD was only the second movie at the time and they were trying new things. People forget Raiders was also a dark movie too and in many ways more violent and gruesome than TOD.

Someone had posted an article on an Indiana Jones site years ago, stating that he believed "Raiders" was just as dark and violent as "Temple of Doom".

It really is. Yet TOD always gets a lashing for having the same elements and level of violence as Raiders.

Not trying to be dumb here, but can you elaborate? It's been a while since I've watched Raiders, so I could use the refresher. I remember Raiders definitely had its moments, but it didn't leave the impression that Temple of Doom did.

    Raiders has:

Satipo impaled through the head on the spike trap at the beginning.

    Various bloody gunshot wounds.

Snakes squirming in the corpses' mouths.

The mechanic diced by the airplane propellor.

And of course the melting faces.

Both have a lot of gruesome elements, however it all about presentation and tone. The two films have very different tones. I always get the feeling that Spielberg was going for a darker and scarier tone with ToD. Things like the lead up with the creepy bat statue and the cult and human sacrifice elements, so on and so forth. Raiders, despite having gruesome elements, maintains a lighter more adventurous tone throughout. The most gruesome scene is obviously the Nazi death scene at the end of the film, but that's the climax, rather than the kind of thing we see throughout.

I'm not saying that things like this definitely make one film better than the other, but rather pointing out why people view ToD as the darkest entry in the franchise.

I always liked the darker tone and mood TOD has compared with the others. It heightens the sense of danger and for me makes things more exciting when it feels like the odds are against Indy and yet he still doesn't give up. Going back to much lighter and funnier with TLC was a mistake IMO, though I know that's not a popular view. TLC while entertaining feels so PC and safe with how toned down it was from the first two and the emphasis on slapstick and gags. Raiders had it's share of humor but was still pretty dark in tone and mood, even if not going all-out Horror like TOD did.

What is this Skull Kingdom movie that some people are mentioning?

Maybe I should give Temple of Doom another chance. It's one of those situations where I really want to love it, but it falls flat when I watch it. I would welcome a return to the tone of Temple of Doom for Indy 5 (to be honest, we don't need another Last Crusade, which KOTCS felt like to me). It would be interesting for them to try the dark presentation style a second time.

ToD isn't a terrible movie by any means, but what really knocks it down a few notches is Willie Scott, worst Indy girl ever. I think I might have enjoyed the movie more had she been replaced in a special edition with Jar Jar Binks .

Now that you mention it, she was one of the biggest grievances I had with that movie. I had forgotten about her initially...somehow.

A lot of incorrect answers here, never fear Darth Board is here. The correct ranking is as follows:
    Raiders
    Crusade
    Doom
    Skull

While I'm at it and considering where we are, here is the correct ranking of the SW films:
    Empire
    New Hope
    Jedi
    Force Awakens
    Revenge of the Clone Menace

Wholeheartedly agreed. I don't want another goofy Indy movie like TLC for the finale, they need to go all-out and make it dark and foreboding like TOD.

For me, TOD is far and away the best... Then there are the others, in no particular order. Strange?

    The Ark

    Raiders of the Lost Ark
will always be considered the most symbolic, since we see Indiana questing after a sacred relic involving the Ark of the Covenant and crossing Nazis in the process.

    Temple of Doom
is the best visual film, though...

I'd love to see a Young Indiana Jones film (perhaps starring Haley Joel-Osment)?
