So basically, it's pretty much common knowledge at this point that Starkiller Base is just a bigger, meaner version of the Death Star. While the film isn't out yet and none of us have seen it, it seems near certain that this is the case, and I can't help but feel that Arndt, Abrams and Kasdan could've come up with something a little more... y'know, original.

My question is, if you could have decided, what would YOU prefer the big, bad threatening weapon be, rather than just another Death Star?

Personally, I'd like to see some semblance of a Force-driven superweapon; basically, instead of the First Order setting up camp on a planet and slapping down a superlaser onto it, perhaps Starkiller Base could have been built over an ancient Jedi or Sith temple housing a Force Nexus of some sort - like the Valley of the Jedi. Perhaps Kylo could have specifically requested Starkiller be built there, fitting in with the 'uneasy alliance' between him and Hux. There, he might have been studying ancient powers or Holocrons or something of the sort. Hell, he could have even held Luke in there, trying to pry his 'Jedi Master' secrets out of him.

In essence, the Force Weapon would consist of Kylo discovering how to move planets through the Force, using the power of this Valley-esque place, having said planets spiral into their parent star. Kind of like a Thought Bomb mixed with a Shawken Device mixed with Centerpoint.

Let me know what YOU think could have been more creative than a third Death Star.

How do we know that this isn't exactly what we will be getting? Starkiller Base could still be a "Force" powered weapon. Perhaps it harnesses the energy from all living things on the planet?

But I see where you're going.. another giant deadly sphere... Bah.

I personally would have loved a space battle with a giant fleet of Star Destroyers.

Oh well. Maybe in Episode IX?

    Well.

I don't think its Death Star 3. I don't think it moves its a planet. Also if old rumors are right it works in conjunction with another device code named the array. If "catapult" has anything descriptive about it and it works with another device my thinking is that the array gathers asteroids, or energy or whatever and the Starkiller launches the projectile at hyperspace speeds.

If it's a giant space laser that uses the energy from the planet's core as a power source, it probably doesn't even need to move. Physics will probably be thrown out the window as usual (not complaining, just noting) and said laser will probably be directed from Starkiller's system at the planet or even star of another system.

The array might just be a series of mirrors or 'amplifiers' or something like that that allows the laser to be directed around the galaxy across large distances, so that Starkiller can kill stars from afar, sitting pretty in its own system without having to move.

Like the "bugs" in Starship Troopers?

Had the producers really wanted to show us something never seen before, that would have been a planetary bombardment by a Super Star Destroyer with energy beams vaporizing entire areas and the like.

Simply put: They had 11 miles of pure starship "porn" at their disposal but all they could think of utilising that is a flipped over carcass on Jakku. :-(

I'm no EU purist or anything but in order to get my 'Star Wars Fix' I've been listening to the Thrawn trilogy audio books on Audible (they're quite good, check 'em out) Anyway, I kinda like the idea of the Katana fleet (also know as the Dark Force) It's basically an entire fleet of ships that require a minimum crew accompaniment. Somehow this fleet of ships becomes lost. Adrift in space. For decades. So long that it becomes nearly a myth. Then it's discovered and there's a question of who will get the much needed ships first. The remnants of the Empire or the New Republic? Anyway, I don't know who gets 'em yet, not at that point in the book yet so please, no spoilers! Kind of a cool idea though. Different from another Death Star but unfortunately similar to the USS Vengeance from Star Trek Into Darkness.
