Which reality, the one where it will continue to make money hand over first for weeks? The one where general audiences will eat it up because its good popcorn fun? Or the one where internet forums will descend into petty fights about the way it should have been for the next two years?

It will be the prequels all over again. Some will love it. Some will hate it. It will make a crap ton of money. And then we'll all fight about it bitterly for a decade. Regardless of actual quality.

All this has happened before...and all this will happen again.

 

I have not seen this movie, so I can't comment. But this was always designed to be a set up. This movie was designed from day one with all the practical effects, and return to form, to reset the franchise from what many viewed as a misstep with the PT.

I am fine with a movie that has great characters, great writing, and great action with a plot that is a bit too familiar if it sets up the rest of the trilogy to do something different. In Rian we trust I suppose.

But to use a tired baseball analogy. Sometimes it pays to bunt a guy on base before you drive him home. You need to bring the people back, before you swing for the fences because if you swing and miss the first time out, you are left with nothing.

If they play it safe with the first movie and then misfire with a subsequent film, they will have earned enough good will from audiences to win them back. A misfire out of the gate loses all those people who wrote off SW after the PT. Its a smart logistical move and solid business plan, even if it is somewhat compromised artistically. But safe will wear off after the first movie. KK will know she will need more than retreads to sustain interest.

 

I have faith in the movie. From what I've heard I'm very optimistic. I just just don't trust human beings to ever agree on anything. Star Wars fans are too broad a group to agree on anything anymore. And we're too proud a group to stay quiet about it and too stubborn a group to let the other side go without a fight.

 

Fandom who hasn't seen the movie is split. Which I find hilarious. The most negativity has been from fans online who haven't seen the movie. So far, from people who have actually seen the movie all I've seen is strong enthusiasm or enthusiasm tempered with a few caveats. The only people who have seen it who didn't like it are a couple of these reddit people. I don't know or respect their opinions like I do some of the reviewers I have read, so I'm inclined to lean toward people who I have a track record of agreeing with.

So, I withhold judgment until I see it. If the plot is a safe but the execution is good, who cares. Plot has never been the strongest part of star wars. They are purposefully reductive and deliberately referential to other material. From the reviews I have read it sounds like the movie wins you over even if you aren't in love with the too familiar plot. I'm hopeful I will share that opinion. But even if I don't and I'm not in love with this movie, if the characters are solid I still have hope that after this setup, we'll see good things ahead.
