Star Wars: Rebels episodes continue to be released a week early and I continue to reap the benefits of it. Thank the Force!

    Last chance for spoilers!!!.....

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm I think many long time fans were FRIGHTENED that the beloved Saga would be "Disneyfied". (I love that word btw) After a mini film and 3 episodes into the first Disney/Lucasfilm led Star Wars series ...I think it's safe to say that this new era that Star Wars has entered...will be just fine.

After watching "Rise Of The Old Masters" twice now....I can say with 100% certainty that this episode might be one of my favorite moments in the Star Wars Saga....Yes...on par with the OT. Why? I'M SO GLAD YOU ASKED!!!

    What worked for me:

    - The Inquisitor. I am in LOVE with this new villain.

    INQ.png

I will admit that I loved the design of him from the start and his very existence really interested me, but the execution of the character and the mystery surrounding him in this episode is intriguing to say the least. This dude IS scary and is obviously more powerful and better trained than Kanan. His line of "Clearly you were a poor student." was backed up by the fact that the Inquistor was owning Kanan in the lightsaber duel. Jason Isaac's voice work? PUUUUUURRRFEECCCTT!

    - Kanan's self doubt and reluctance to train Ezra is a storyline that I wasn't completely expecting to be portrayed the way it had been.

    Kanan bumming.png

Lazy writers would have had the master take up training the student reluctantly at first, but disregard self doubt right away into the second episode. Instead, we are getting someone who wasn't even sure he could trust Ezra to train in the first place. Hera had to push Kanan to do it! From the Holocron test in "Spark" to the end of "Droids In Distress" it came off Kanan needed to SEE MORE with his own eyes that Ezra was ready/worthy to start training him. After he saw the raw power in Ezra; Kanan knew that he had no choice, but to stop putting it off.
In "Rise" you see the seeds of why he put if off in the first place...it wasn't Ezra...it was his own doubt within himself. This ending shot regarding this storyline was ON THE MONEY!

    Jedi training.png

    - Luminara was never alive to be rescued in the first place.

    Dead Jedi.png

That darker tone fans have been pounding the table for? Well, this one's for you! The Inquisitor and the Empire use dead Jedi bones to lure Kanan into a trap? Holy hand grenades! Kinda hard to explain how this works, but....from what I gather, her bones still give off her "presence"...but it's still "clouded" according to Kanan. Curious to read what all of your opinions on this storyline are.

    - The writing and voice acting was firing on all cylinders in this episode.

    Humor.png

Rebels hasn't been perfect by any means since the start, but this is the first episode besides the mini film "Spark" that I totally lost myself in. The pacing was 100% perfect and the humor I found myself LOL a number of times. That all can be killed by mediocre voice acting and thankfully this episode didn't have that. I'm not gonna lie and say the voice acting has been great from the start of the season. It's been fine, but not standout up to this point. "Rise" is the first episode where the actors seem to have "found the zone" that their characters need to operate in.

    - We are actually seeing a Jedi get trained before our eyes!...besides in ESB.

    Ezra lightsaber.png

I am in love with Jedi training. No idea why, but I'm a sucker for it. Rebels is giving us an inside that Clone Wars only scratched the surface of at times. Doesn't hurt that the training is taking place on top of the Ghost while it's hovering in mid air! Observe below! Can't wait to see more of it!

*side note* Are all Lightsaber blade heights adjustable? I'm not super familiar with the EU and curious if this comes from that, always been canon or is a whole new idea in the first place?

    Ezra on top.png

What DIDN'T work for me: (Not much)

    - I'll make this quick....*sigh*...why?

    crappy weapon .png

....No...I'm being serious...why do you still use this Ezra? IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING!

    Bad ass.png

    SEE!!!!!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

As always I look forward to reading and discussing all of your thoughts and opinions on this episode!

The adjustable lightsabre length concept originated in the Splinter of the Mind's Eye novel. It's a dual-phase 'sabre (used by Luke to cut a hole around a small lock.

Your cable provider needs to support the app and you need your personal cable provider's login.

Really? Wow. I read that a LONG time Ago and I don't remember that all. :(

I think so, yes. Luke retracted and thinned his lightsabre blade to cut around a small lock. The EU later described it as a dual-phase weapon, but I don't think Anakin's former weapon featured two crystals enabling it to alternate between two blade configurations.

I first heard of the adjustable saber in I, Jedi. I never read splinter of the mind's eye, because I heard it didn't make much sense even within the original trilogy. All these years I thought stackpole made it up, thanks for the clarification SWtoy.

    http://vodlocker.com/vcx15yu69r2e Enjoy! I sure did.

This is the first episode that truly had that '...before the dark times...before the EMPIRE' type of vibe. I'm a fan of the whole group now and will def be rooting for their success.

Speaking of Lightsabers, did anybody else find it weird that Kanan called his a laser sword? I don't think a Jedi has ever called it that before.

At first I did but then it dawned on me that it was probably a nod to little Anakin using the term, so it wouldn't seem like Anakin merely made it up on the spot to try to cover for not knowing what it was really called. Filoni (via Lucas) is good for doing little stuff like that.

No, creating an account is not required- the page is just set up to make you THINK that it's required lol.

All u do is go to the page and click on the small "x" on the ad that's on the screen. Then press play. These type of sites are all set up in this way in order to take advantage of users that don't know any better. The vid is completely playable w/o any signing in or up for anything.

That's exactly what I was thinking, would have made more sense if Ezra said it though. Anyways, I still love the nod to The Star Wars.

Agreed. It was Kanan's attempt at "dumbing down" the language so that he could connect with Ezra a bit more, although it was a bit needless coz Ezra's not a 4 year old lol. I imagine its a common term among young kids in the GFFA tho that are familiar with jedi culture or weapons.

No problem :) Glad u got it working because I had forgot about the initial step of closing out the initial pop-up window so that you'd then be able to see the video player screen but its not hard to figure out anyway.

But yeah this episode had the right stuff for sure. If only they’d ditch Ezra’s electro wrist slingshot thingy. Disney shoulda just gave him a pellet pistol and let Sabine paint it to look more kid-friendly or something.

As far as I know, we haven't thought of cracking down on this (or even discussed it, for that matter). I personally believe that linking to leaked copies of the episodes could be fine here, given that not everybody has Disney XD as one of their provided channels, just as long as you support the official release when it comes out on DVD (which is something that Game Of Thrones fans without HBO have been known to do). If you were to, say, link to a torrent containing an illegally-obtained video game or the entire text of a novel, then we would have a problem. But for this, I believe we may be able to make an exception. If this changes, we will be sure to let you know.
