FINALLY!!! It feels like an eternity since I first watched “The Siege Of Lothal” at Star Wars: Celebration and I could not WAIT to write an official review for it when it aired. “Fire Across The Galaxy” ended with quite the reveal of Fulcrum being Ahsoka and how Darth Vader was getting involved in capturing the Rebel cell on Lothal. Quite the cliffhanger! Would we see Ahsoka come face to face with her former master? Would Kanan go head to head with a true Dark Lord of the Sith? SCROLL DOWN TO FIND OUT!!!!!!!

    *SPOILERS AHEAD*

Last chance for spoilers!!!!!!!!! They are QUITE big and such….

    What worked for me:

    - Darth Vader

    IMG_1809.png

I have one word to describe how the writers handled Vader in this one hour special…DAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMNNNNNNNNNN! They NAILED Darth Vader’s characterization. Vader walks with such a weight and fights with such power, it truly is terrifying. Yes, even in cartoon form. It was nice to see him cut loose a little AS the Dark Lord rather than just plain Anakin from the Clone Wars. We have a tiny glimpse of what Vader’s power level is in the OT and the canon books/comics which have done a good job of showing some of this power, but it’s nice to see it on the actual screen. He basically kicks the crap out of Kanan and Ezra with EASE and they barely escape his clutches. They throw a AT-DP on top of him for goodness sakes! Vader just shrugs it off. Similar to what happened in Marvel Star Wars issue 2. Needless to say, Darth Vader is a force (pun not intended) to be reckoned with!

    D.jpg

See what I mean????? DAMN! Vader is and will always be...a baller.

    - The A-Wings are here!

    IMG_1813.png

I LOVE the Rebel starships. Everyone loves X-Wings, but I was never over the moon about them myself. It was always the OTHER Rebel Starships, like the A-Wing, which I ended up loving. Mainly because we didn't get to see their full potential and the mystery of "Are the other ships better than the X-Wing?" Seeing these ships in the spotlight was (I’m not kidding) an 8 year old dream come true. It doesn’t matter that Darth Vader comes in with his Tie Advanced and destroys most of them…*sniff*

    - Kanan’s apprehensiveness to join a greater Rebellion.

    IMG_1810.png

Kanan always seems to be the voice of reason for this Rebel Cell. Of course, it would be worrisome to join forces with a bigger operation. The stakes become that much bigger and the Empire will throw even more power at you. Kanan is smart to not want to join up initially. Especially with his history in the Clone Wars.

    - Darth Vader’s discovery of Ahsoka!

    FullSizeRender.jpg

This isn’t an actual face to face meeting, but rather Vader sensing Ahsoka through the Force when she’s on a nearby ship. Which on one hand is kind of a bummer because we all want to see them meet face to face. On the other hand though, it builds tension and anticipation for when that actually DOES happen. Not gonna lie…I got goosebumps at Celebration when Vader said “The apprentice lives.” after sensing her. SO. FREAKING. GOOD.

    What didn’t work for me:

    - Disguised as...a stormtrooper....

    IMG_1811.png

THE TINIEST OF NIT PICKS!!!!!!…Can we please stop with our heroes disguising themselves as Stormtroopers? I’m kinda done with it. That's just me though...

    Quick hitters:

    Star Wars: Commander anyone?

    IMG_1808.png

Could the droid’s name, whom is owned by Lando, be Vuffi Raa? The name is from the old EU Lando novels. Never know.

    IMG_1812.png

    - Sabine took a blaster bolt deflection to the head, via Darth Vader...He hit her pretty close to mark judging by the black spot on her purple helmet.

    FullSizeRender.jpg

Now for the part all of us Star Wars fans hate, which is the waiting game for Season 2 to start. We have a lot of questions that we need answered. How does Rex and the other Clone troopers fit into all this? Who are the new Inquisitors? Will we finally see Ahsoka and Vader go head to head? In a few short months…we will start to get some answers...

    Till next time, Star Warriors!

I have to see this yet today. Was waiting for this episode since Celebration Anaheim.
I saw that clip with Sabine getting headshot in the previews and I was like: Man, that was grimm... oh, she's alive and kicking like nothing happened.
    I felt betrayed.

Any ideas on why the Empire is "really" on Lothal? I thought that maybe it's due to the Jedi Temple. I have a feeling Sidious is looking for ancient Jedi / Sith sites. Perhaps from one of these sites, it would be easier to locate Yoda and Kenobi / other Jedi. I think one of the reasons Yoda was able to connect with Kanan and Ezra (in addition to his burgeoning skills via Qui-Gon's training was because they were at this kind of Force nexus location.

Yeah, having some cool backstory as why on Lothal... We know that the Empire installation is the biggest in the Outer Rim and is producing or planning lot of prototypes - whoch in the end is pretty lame, because we have these ''Rebels'', who are leaving and entering the planet that should be under heavy Imperial surveaillance like nothing happened, and instead of sabotage and diverse actions, they are stealing speeder bikes, fruit, guns if they are lucky...
Second - due to the show's budget. Maybe I don't wanna any cool backstory than what we know, because the Rebels would seem as more losers than they are.

Vader seriously kicked their butts on land and in space. Still, considering that Kanan didn't even finished his training, he did well - he didn't back away from the fight and knew when to quit. Ahsoka now knows the truth, right? I don't know if she is just in denial or still doesn't trust the Ghost crew, but she must know.

I liked a little touches, like Ezra trying and failing the mind trick, the camaraderie, the well-oiled machine that is Ghost crew, relationship between Kanan and Hera, Lando's cameo (and hate that he gets from the guys)... Too bad we have to wait for more. But, in the very next episode, we get the clones. Captain Rex FTW.

This episode is one of the best. My top 5 keeps getting shuffled around.
Not only to the face but she took one to the chest. Her armor is a lot stronger than the stormtroopers. Probably that Mandalorian metal Beskar.

Good episode. You have a nice unmasked screen cap of Sabine? She's so cute!

Asohka was Vader's apprentice? Where did that happen? Rebels are canon, right? Apprentice as in Sith apprentice?

She was Anakin's apprentice in the Clone Wars, pre-Vader. She left the Jedi order before he turned.

I never got into the clone wars. Now, let me see if this makes sense, gabeesh? So somewhere in attack of the clones or RoTS, Annie had an apprentice? The continuity doesn't make sense. We see the beginning of the clone wars in the movies, but Annie turns to Vader. Got me so far? Where does it line up in the whole story line?

Is the Clone wars cartoon supposed to take place between AoTC or RoTS?

Ahsoka's apprenticeship with Anakin occurs entirely within the Clone Wars series, which takes place between AOTC and ROTS.

I have a big paradox with Kanan here, I hope you guys can help me out:

    I CAN'T understand Kanan's attitude:
I don't understand quite much the attitude of Kanan being so hard with the Alliance and the big deal of joining them... I haven't read his comics and I don't know what his story is all about in the Clone Wars but I have seen all Rebels episodes. I really think this has implications that doesn't belong to this timeline of events in Star Wars because it is a really Dark Period between Episode III and ANH... My dark side is telling me that this attitude of Kanan is a feeling that will penetrate thru the new Trilogy and is not necessary how Kanan should suppose to react. If it is because the stakes become that much bigger and the Empire will throw even more power at you... this is kind of fear talking...

I CAN understand that as a Jedi after the Clone Wars his orders were: RUN! hide!.. and survive!. Of course he doesn't want to join the Alliance if you look it that way, he will be exposed as an easy target putting everyone in danger. But he is not Ben Kenobi and I really don't remember Old Ben being disagree in joining the Alliance or also Luke to join them too... Ben's orders were keep an eye on Luke on Tatooine, Yoda to exile and that's why Obi and Yoda didn't stay with Bail Organa or the Alliance.
I also understand that Kanan felt that he and his crew being by their own were helping more people than serving the Alliance, but hey... why can't you do both?

In Kanan's back story (explained through The Last Padawan comic series and a little in the novel A New Dawn) we learn that Kanan was just a Padawan when order 66 came in and he watched his master (Depa Billaba) die at the hands of the clones.

I think, as a result of Kanan's past and the fact that he was forced not to trust anyone for so long, he would naturally be reluctant about joining up with an organised rebellion for fear of it ending like the clone wars did. Not only that, but I get the impression that Kanan likes the tight-knit dynamic of the ghost crew and probably doesn't want to lose his "family" to a greater rebellion.

My favorite part was the "Hey Snips, it's me!" part with Ahsoka. (His actual line was much better and I'm glad neither "snips" nor "skyguy" were used, but anyway...) The apprentice lives and she knows what happened to her former master! And the end with Vader and the Emperor was really cool, especially when Kenobi is mentioned by Vader. I like how you can tell that Kenobi is frequently on Vader's mind. I'm sure he's a sore spot with Vader and the Emperor, as well as Yoda. A great deal of Imperial resources have probably been expended trying to find them both. It makes sense that the Emperor would be interested in capturing Ahsoka for this reason, hoping that she is still in contact with the old Jedi masters and will help lead the Sith Lords to them. Vader may have a different motive, though. Even though his disdain for his master is not apparent yet in Rebels as it is after ANH, he still craves his master's position. In Lords of the Sith he confesses that he has thought of supplanting his master. He doesn't realize he has children yet, so realizing Ahsoka is still alive may be the opportunity he's been waiting for. My guess is Vader will try to turn her and recruit her as his apprentice once again. I predict he will not succeed and will be forced to kill her. However, it would also be cool to have Ahsoka turn to the dark side and join Vader only to be killed by the Emperor when he finds out what Vader has done behind his back.

@Hermann22 You mentioned in your review something about Lando's droid...http://www.starwars.com/databank/willie-w1-le names the droid... W1-LE (or "Willie").

I think Kanan is definitely afraid. Yes...fear leads to anger (he has a little of that too)...and anger leads to hate...etc. But it is what it is. Kanan is afraid. Afraid of getting involved in something so big after laying low for so long. The last 15 years of his life have been spent trying to forget the past and become someone else entirely. Now history is repeating itself and he is called upon to be the Jedi he could have been had things not gone south. He has no one to guide him. The stakes are high as the lives of those he loves hang in the balance. Naturally, he wants to take the easy way out by running away with Hera and the gang and going back to their small-time jobs that put themselves out there a little less. But they can't even return to Lothal now. They are constantly on the run. There really is no going back, and I think he knows this, but he is discouraged and overwhelmed with the responsibilities that have been thrown into his lap. Enter Hera. She is his voice of reason. Where Hera goes, Kanan goes...it's that simple. She is his strength. Check out this excerpt from A New Dawn (for non-comic readers and those who have not read A New Dawn, Caleb is Kanan's given name before it was changed to hide his identity):

As much as the Emperor, Caleb was responsible for making Kanan’s early adolescence miserable with his constant regrets. Caleb was all counterfactuals and what-ifs, all mental replays of the deaths of Depa Billaba and the other Jedi, always looking for some way disaster could have been averted. It was just as well that he was avoiding other people then, because it had made the young fugitive unbearably morose. While the other teenagers in the hangouts he’d tried to blend into were thinking about podracing, he was off in the corner trying to figure out how Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi could have better protected himself on Mygeeto, or Master Plo Koon on Cato Neimoidia. Every name he’d found out about in those days had just set the whole thing off again, making it impossible for him to forget. A waste of time . Except for one thing: All that thinking and hiding in those early days had trained him to analyze situations quickly and thoroughly. The tactical smarts Hera seemed to like had sprung from there. In that case, he thought, there was one good thing that had come of it. Because looking at her in the pilot’s chair now, he determined that he’d follow her anywhere.
