Rebels took a break for a number of weeks and in the meantime, Star Wars fans were treated to our first stand-alone film that strayed from the SKYWALKER Saga (that's right, you heard me) in Rogue One. Of course, Rogue One featured the Clone Wars veteran Saw Gerrera, and he makes his return to animated form in these episodes. Does his appearance offer anything interesting? Can this season of Rebels keep its momentum going after a solid outing in the first half of season 3? Read below to find out!

    4.png

    SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!!!

    What worked for me:

    - Saw Gerrera
    1.png

I can't talk about Saw Gerrera without mentioning Rogue One as well. I LOVED the character in the film and thought it was really cool that Forrest Whitaker returned to voice him. Maybe he likes being a part of the greater Star Wars canon? Maybe it's good money? Both?!?!??! Either way, it's awesome. Whitaker dialed back his raspy voice when compared to the film and it's obviously on purpose for something to come. Saw's overall design on the show is consistent with his design in Rogue One and it really translates well into animated form. For those wondering if Saw is still that unhinged Rebel radical...don't fear. It's there in plain sight and it's honestly disheartening. You can see Saw means well, but his life has been full of torment and anger, to which he has freely given himself over.

    9.png

Saw doesn't play with throwing his weight around to the other Rebels and the seeds of being waaaaaay more extreme than the other Rebels are planted. I expected Kanan to take this guy out at one point, but in the end Ezra accused Saw of being no better than the Empire, which brought Saw to his senses. It was nice to see Saw have some heart, and I only want to see more of this character. He's unpredictable and a GREAT actor is backing him up. I'll take what I can get, but I would LOVE a comic series based on him and more appearances in animated form.

    - Geonosis and getting to the bottom of what's going on:
    15.jpg

If you have read the Darth Vader comics, you might already know about the little survivors of Geonosis: a Queen giving birth to half-bug, half-droid babies....yeah, it was weird, but awesome (see below). Anyway, we don't get that in this episode, unfortunately, but we do get a survivor from Geonosis that shows up and tries to kill off our main characters. Saw has been tracking the bug and he knows that it has crucial information about the Empire. The end of the episode was, dare I say it, kind of disturbing with the way Saw was handling the situation.
    5.png

The bug tried to kill the rebels, and was successful in in killing Saw's team...the casualties of war, right? It was nice to see that the race of Geonosians haven't been completely destroyed, as the bug has the queen egg. Lord knows I love those Geonosian queens! I have to say, the animation for the Geonosian looked great. Rebels animation is just KILLING it this year in how sharp it looks. It can't go unpraised...speaking of that....

-The atmosphere created in the show and overall animation:
    3.png

This episode did a great job of creating an unsettling atmosphere for most of the episode that kept it's mystery heightened. Hard to pull that off in an animated show for kids.

    8.png

I found myself (once again) coming away really impressed by the landscape and animation of this episode. I know we haven't gotten a TON of different settings in Rebels, but shots like the one above look fantastic and it sure beats staying on Lothal 90% of the time.

    What didn't work for me:

    - Nothing DIDN'T work for me. I really loved this two-part story!

    Quick Hitters:

    - Steela....those who have seen the Clone Wars knows how much of a bummer this is. 13.png

    - New Troopers that don't show up in the other films so people can complain about it! Yay!!!
    10.jpg

    - Look how nutty it would have been if Rebels went this route. Below are pics from the Clone Wars episode "Legacy of Terror" and Darth Vader issue 4:
    Karina.jpg
    6.jpg

I thought these episodes overall were a solid outing. We were given great characters, great atmosphere and an action packed ending. Rebels works best in hour-long chunks, IMO. I keep finding that my favorite episodes tend to be the ones that are essentially an hour long movie. I want more Saw Gerrera in this show. His uneasiness would be a GREAT addition to the series. Sadly, I doubt Whitaker would do that, but hopefully he's not opposed to showing up here and there.

As always, I look forward to reading your thoughts on this episode!

I really loved the episode, I agree I hoped the Queen would show up but we saw that already so it's not such a big loss. Rebels just keeps getting more exciting with Rebels coming closer to R1 and ANH really looking forward to all of it!

@Hermann22 , when you write the second part review, maybe you should merge them, because most of the people watched these as a single episode. Just a suggestion. :)

Great review. You have such a deep knowledge of the series connecting comics to old EU stuff. I'm not sure I get the above quoted line. Is the fact that the main films are the skywalker saga controversial? Also, was "atmosphere" a pun? I liked it ;)

My two cents on the episode:

    Liked

    * Saw's Steela holo
    * The connection between the egg and the vader comics
    * Hera's a pretty great pilot, good at getting out of a tight spot
    * Kanan is approaching Jedi master level eh? That was one big object being levitated.
    * Hera ingratiating herself with Rebel high command.
    * Rocket troopers seemed a bit more effective than normal troopers. I liked that Kanan felt left out when everyone else was enjoying Sabine's butt-kickery.

    Didn't like
    * Zeb is such a dodo. I'm not sure his purpose in the crew. He is the "muscle" in a group that largely fights with blasters or laser swords and would likely lose in a fight to almost anyone else on the crew. "Hey what about me?" "yeah I'll bust some heads together".

    * That the droids couldn't fight with a destroyed remote

    Other

    * Was the imperial commander the chick that's in a lot of the new canon books? I can't recall her name, because I haven't read them, but I remember an article saying a young black female was being set up as the Pellaeon of the new canon.

    * Astromechs can plot complicated hyperspace jumps, but can't have a vocabulator. The circle with a dot could have been better explained.

LOL...You got where I was going with that line. :)

I agree Zeb was kind of annoying, but in the end, it didn't take me out of the episode because...well...frankly he's like that most of the time. HA!

And thanks for the kind words! :)

My first thought when I was her was "Is that Cienna Ree?". Hopefully we will find out for sure, one way or another soon.

That Imperial Captain is not Ciena Ree. That's Captain Brunson

At this time, Ciena is finishing the Academy, later she will become lieutenant on the Devastator and be on it while Vader chases Leia. So, this isn't her.

And the captain doesn't look much like Ciena:

    Ciena Ree.png

I really liked these episodes. They really show what Filoni & Co. are capable of when they don't have 22 min. limitation.

I liked how the episodes connected to Darth Vader comic and Rogue One. I liked how Saw was differently acted by Forest Whitaker, not as frantic and more levelheaded - he could be brought to the right way of thinking and in the end spared Klik-Klak. Speaking of, never thought I would find a Geonosian cute, lol, but I did.

Sabine gave me the biggest laugh with 'sand gets everywhere' line. And jet-pack rocks.

Kanan is a badass and Ezra was much more balanced in this episode, while he wanted to help Saw, he saw (!) what was wrong with his behavior.

The pacing was excellent, I really felt the weight of the episode, probably due to Rogue One. I am loving the way Story Group is connecting everything.

I didn't like this episode. I worry that Rogue One has made the crew from Rebels look soft.

I felt myself taking Saw's side throughout the episode. Clearly the Empire was up to something on Geonosis, and clearly the Geonosian knew something that they could not understand.

Kanan's offer to take him to Chopper Base for a formal interrogation where they could easily translate him (after all, Dooku understood Poggle the Lesser in AOTC) seemed perfectly reasonable.

But instead of getting any useful intel they turn just let him go hide his egg and are satisfied to have rescued Saw and gotten pictures of gas canisters as a 'victory'?

I really don't like the 'goody goody' nature anymore. Not after seeing Cassian Andor.

I thought these episodes were epic. I too wondered if it was supposed to be Sloane, but it's cool that it's not, especially after what happened. I like that Saw is considered a bit too much and going too far, but that part of him being more cooperative, unsettled me a bit.

A big theme of the season is that "how" you do things is just as important as 'why" you are doing them. They turned the bug loose because they had evidence of genocide. They couldn't have known that the circle with a dot could have been the death star. They seemed convinced that the bug was trying to show them the gas canisters.

Yes, but they already knew that the Empire had committed genocide on Geonosis. What they didn't know is why and what the Empire was up to there.

All they learned was *how* the Empire committed the genocide.

This season has me yearning for more Cham Syndulla and Saw Gerrera. Those two know how to fight a war.

This was a pretty good episode of Rebels in my opinion. Forest Whitaker definitely gave a great performance that was a toned down but equally extreme portrayal of Saw Gerrera that serves as a good bridge between his character in Rogue One and the Saw depicted in The Clone Wars. I'm actually surprised they showed him torturing the Klick Klack, but then again I probably shouldn't be given that it fits his character at this point in time. I was also expecting that this episode would show the split between Saw and the greater Rebellion, but that leaves it open for more of him in the future which I am definitely okay with.

I really liked this episode but I kinda felt it should have aired before Rogue One as it furthered the construction of the Death Star story line and it developed Saw more for the film. I also felt that the conflict between Saw and the Rebels over Klick Klack was pushed and then quickly resolved. The deal Kanan made with Saw was perfectly rational but for whatever reason Ezra was completely against it and Saw immediately broke it which seemed counter intuitive. The quip about sand also seemed like it was forced.;)

I definitely liked that the Rebels team didn't see eye to eye with Saw over his methods or views as its realistic that not everyone will share the same views and opinions on how to fight a war. The jetpack stormtroopers were also pretty cool, and I initially thought that was Captain Rae Sloane as well but I'm pretty sure she is supposed to be more competent Imperial Officer. Overall, I liked this episode of Star Wars: Rebels.

Good episode. Really like how the season is ratcheting up.
It was interesting to see how they animated Saw and even made his left eye slightly closed just like Forest Whitakers is in RO.

Very cool episodes, Psycho Saw is awesome, great choice in bringing him back. I hope we see Klit Klat again, Too bad the empire got away with another genocidal act.
