    • Literal star wars!
    • TIE Defender (still my favourite fighter after 20 years)!
    • The aesthetics of the Ghost with Y-Wings docked. (Nice piloting Bridger.)

    Dislikes
    • Continued Imperial incompetence from their best minds despite material advantages. Perhaps have them fail in ways that reflect their differences to the heros e.g. power lust, greed, bureaucracy, arrogance etc. If not then at least due to luck, the Force, or other circumstances outside their control for once.
    • I find it hard to believe an Empire sympathetic holo-net would broadcast such direct and accurate criticism of the Emperor. Perhaps we could have seen Mon Mothma's address in real-life, or a live feed and later cut to the rebels hearing a propaganda report about her.
    • Portraying our favourite rebel cell as ignorant of need-to-know security culture after all this time is both ridiculous and unecessary. It would have made zero difference to their tactical choices to have known the importance of their rendezvous' cargo yet Hera, Ezra and Zeb all whined about it.
    Inferences
    • I expect to see a mission that involves the destruction of the facility producing the TIE Defender prototypes, their lead engineers and plans ahead in Rebels. There's no way Vader and the top brass of Imperial pilots would be flying TIE Advanced or Interceptor designs throughout the OT without good reason.

I agree and acknowledge your quotation marks around official!

I'd probably use the words "chairperson", "above-ground spokesperson" or "figure-head" though. I doubt she's been granted any authority to give orders and her power and influence depends entirely on the backing of different and diverse rebel cells. Rogue One seemed to imply there was no formal consensus and that support could be withdrawn at any time by any group - this may even work to the advantage of the Resistance.

It was such a fantastic episode.

As @Hermann22 says, the visuals were amazing. Thrawn was clever to foresee what Hera would do, but Hera was way more clever with that proton torpedo move. I guess her promotion to General is coming for achievements like this one.

And talking about Hera, it was awesome to see her in fangirl mode meeting Mon Mothma. In some way having her actually meeting the Chandrilan Senator there was a great way to reinforce the idea of the Rebellion being something bigger than having everyone knowing everyone. Hera had a long time working for the Rebellion but that didn't mean she was acquainted with their top leaders.

I love how this new canon is showing Mon Mothma as someone down-to-earth and approachable. She brings caf to Hera, she helps Thane Kyrell to cure his hangover in Lost Stars, she gives love advice to Leia in Moving Target, plus all the stuff we recently learned about in Empire's End:

She goes to buy a baby gift for Han and Leia's baby and offers Sinjir Rath Velus an advisor position, rendering him speechless - which is a lot to say!

That plus pairing with Chopper to detach the Ghost - was simply superb. Kudos to Genevieve O'Reilly for doing a great voice work.

Bonus: her personal recollection about Jyn Erso in the Rogue One novelisation made my eyes water terribly - guess I'd be fangirling like Hera too LOL:

    SUPPLEMENTAL DATA: IN MEMORIAM
[Document #MS8619 (“Unpublished Reflections on Jyn Erso”), from the
personal files of Mon Mothma (via the Hextrophon Collection).]
I regret to say I only met Jyn twice. To claim I knew her well would be an insult to the young woman whose fervor captivated so many. Conversely, to speak only of her effect on our movement—to recount yet again the rallying of the Rebellion and our transformation from a wary coalition into a unified nation—would be both redundant and insulting.
So put no stock in my words. I can tell you of those two meetings and what I saw in her—or what, looking back, I remember seeing in her, which may be far removed from the truth. You may find more of a weary ex-senator than Jyn Erso in all this.
Jyn was in chains when we met before Operation Fracture. I’d seen her file and chosen her for the mission for reasons I wish I could be proud of. I expected to meet a troubled girl who had been failed by the Alliance in a hundred different ways: failed by Saw, failed by those of us who knew Saw, failed when she went out on her own, and failed by our inability to save her father or mother. I expected she could be persuaded (by which I suppose I meant manipulated) into helping us, and that in doing so we might help her, too.
But the woman I met at Base One could not be manipulated. There are a very few people whose will and ferocity are so great that they pull other people in their wake. I’ve known some who cultivated that talent as politicians and generals, for good or ill. Jyn, I think, never knew the effect she had on others—never realized the intensity of her own humanity or the presence she brought to a room. She was, as expected, troubled and quarrelsome; she was also impossible to ignore or forget.
In her short life, she had seen relentless hardship and become hard herself. But her fire shone bright.
If our first meeting was brief, our second was even briefer. We exchanged a handful of private words when she briefed Alliance High Command on the threat of the Death Star, and the woman I met then was far different from the one we’d chained. Was she at peace? I don’t believe so. But she held herself with a newfound certainty.
It’s become fashionable in some quarters to claim Jyn Erso went to Scarif intending to die a martyr—that she realized she had lost everything and chose her path by its inevitable end. I will dispute this claim until my own dying days. I think Jyn fully recognized who she was and sought a way to channel her best and worst impulses, her darkest moments and her brightest, toward a cause worthy of her true incandescence.
In a kinder universe, she would have walked away from Scarif. I cannot imagine who she would have become, but I think she would have been extraordinary.
I am grateful I knew her, no matter how short the time.

I like how in the Star Wars saga we have a lot of examples of people not using lightsabers and making a difference anyway.

When I saw the preview and heard Dantooine I jumped on my seat clapping, literally. :D

In my headcanon, after the Battle of Yavin she meets later a certain nerf-herder and he's bragging that he's a better pilot LOL.

Her speech was truly inspiring and I am glad they chose this animated series to show it. When she says at the end "ARE YOU WITH ME?" obviously I shouted at my screen: "ALL THE WAY!" hahaha. *shed a silent tear for Cassian and Jyn*

This is one aspect I am truly enjoying from this series: how the Rebel Alliance was being formed from different Rebel cells, with different codes and rules. Each cell would bring their ideas to the Rebellion and of course there would be clashes between them - as we saw it later in Rogue One.

This was a great episode for the series, let alone the season. A real bridge to the events of R1 and OT, and it all seemed so seamless too.

The imagery of the nebula was fantastic, and the music during the scenes - perfect!

    Catches breath...

A minor gripe from me was the "flying closer to the hot stuff" part of the chase. Why would the tie have to follow? If I was running along the outside of a pool of acid, and being chased....and then decided to make a shortcut through the acid...couldn't the chaser just keep running along the safe outer rim? The tie knew there were reinforcements on the other side blocking the escape, so they didn't have catch up right away.

Had to make sure they came out at a particular place on the other side?

Maybe I was misconstruing the scene. It seemed to me more like they were both following an orbit to a sun, and then one ship goes "I know I'll fly super close to the sun to get away". If the chaser followed the original arc, they'd still end up coming out at the same place. I'm thinking too much about it. I know it isn't like real life nebula and was just supposed to look cool/ convey a risky manuver whereby the more skilled (or maybe better shielded) person won.

It wouldn't be the first time in the show we have seen an Imperial make a dumb move to gain a promotion.

I agree with your sentiment about Ezra. He started off this season with what seemed to be a darker more aggressive character, but almost immediately after those first 2 episodes he's back to the same old goofy Ezra.
IMO Ezra needs to either be leaning towards the dark side by the end of this season or else keep him light for good.

After Bendu played "Dr. Phil" and as this season wears on, I'm actually starting to believe Ezra and Kanan hashing out their problems was the end of Ezra's force story.

I'm really starting to believe the show has moved onto the rebellion and mandalore, something i'm ok with, but they should have made it clearer that the ezra-kanan story had ended.

Without confirming the direction of ezra in the actual show, he's the main problem as i highlighted in that post.

Im interested to see what will happen if Ezra's present during the Maul/Kenobi showdown. Im assuming if he happens to show up during that, he might question himself a little like he always does, but ultimately turn on Maul. Im really holding on to the hope that we get some more Bendu in a meaningful way, and/or that Ezra has some sort of challenge to his character again. You're probably right, but I dont wanna believe it lol.

I think the struggle has been how to make Ezra go dark with out making this a carbon copy of Obi-wan and Anakin. If they do make Ezra go dark it would Ben interesting to see him go dark more like Dooku, without all the emotion Anakin had. Just purpose driven move to the dark side to stop the sith with no desire to join the sith. Kanan and Ezra duel Kanan loses but Ezra has no intention of hurting him or the rest of the crew.

Upon re-reading a few comments on this thread - I'd like to reiterate that I loved this episode! However, I strongly feel like we've not seen enough of a whole story this season... just lots of little arcs.

    We've not seen Ahsoka.
    We've not seen Vader.
We've seen Ezra being a badass for only 2 1/2 episodes or so.. other than that he's acted completely normal.
We've seen a tiny bit of Bendu.

People think all of these loose ends can be fixed by Season 4 with all of the filler episodes we've come to expect? - Again, don't get me wrong I kinda love the filler episodes.

I see Rebels going till Season 5 or 6.

I agree. I've mostly enjoyed this season, but it just meanders. Season 1 was getting the group together, and overcoming the grand inquisitor. Season 2 was bookended with Vader, had the heroes running from inquisitors while trying to find a rebel based.

    What is season 3 about?

I enjoyed the disdain amongst Gold squadron for the Ghost crew's methods - it feels real.

This kinda bugged me too, but as has been mentioned I may have not fully understood what was going on.

This won't stop them from misappropriating the same word next year, unfortunately. They've done the same thing every season - the "standalone" episodes almost always have at least one nugget that ties into the larger story, especially toward the end. It's one of the things that I love about the show.

I liked it more than I thought I would.

Loved the scene of the ships gathering to start the Rebellion.

    That was huge.

Great post, Bligh- ^this^ one portion made me wonder (once again) about how exactly those characters will make a return to 'Rebels'.

I'm supposing that Vader will make an appearance early in season 4, and that upon seeing him, (or even exchanging words with him), Kanan and/or Ezra will realize that if Vader survived the destructive ending (of season 2), then perhaps Ahsoka may have as well– and *perhaps* a portion of season 4 will consist of 'The Search for Ahsoka'.

...or maybe not. But I'd certainly love to see it happen!

    -

More than that, (despite my profile-avatar pic), I want to see more of what this episode, 'Secret Cargo' has deliciously lead us into– the larger scope of the rebellion.

I'm kinda hoping for a bit of character expansion as well -- like (for instance) a Wedge-centred episode... anyone? (x-wing)

We'll see. After seeing this beauty of this episode, I'm choosing to wholeheartedly trust the writers.

It was actually my first thought when I saw it.

Like many others, I was blown away by the amount of significant, historic events in this episode. While I understand the raised eyebrows at Ezra and his piloting, it wasn't much of a distraction for me. But like many others, I wonder what has happened to the arc they were setting up for Ezra over the past two seasons. Obviously, we have more time to explore it. But it does seem a bit haphazard.

But that's beside the point. This was a fantastic episode.
