Not in a bad way, necessarily. I'm just wondering- given how Disney would seemingly know that Rey's parentage would be a big question to fans, do you think they might be deliberately playing with that idea a bit (not unlike papa Hammil's famous trolling)?

Some spoilers for Star Wars media up to current:

For instance, there was speculation that Jyn Erso would be Rey's mother- seems all but impossible now.

Clues in the new movies- Obi Wan's voice in her vision, Palpatine's scream in the new trailer... you all know these by now. Rather than be legitimate clues about Rey (or fan misconstrued nonsense) could they be Red Herrings instead?

Del and Iden in Battlefront II were built up to be parents near the end of the campaign, sparking speculation- that doesn't seem to be the case given the new content.

Many think DJ's "aloof, distant father figure" thing might mean he's Rey's dad.

I'm sure there are others, and please let me know if you think of any so I can add them.

With all the new characters, too, Rey's parentage could be a variety of people. What I'm wondering is- do you think that Disney has, in any given situation, purposefully put one of these red herrings into place? Or are each of them simply the result of fan over-speculation?

Personally, I'm starting that Disney wants us to be speculating about Rey, and may be dotting the field a bit to keep us talking- but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

Rey is a nobody. It doesn't matter who her parents are. Rian Johnson said Rey's reaction to who her parents are is more important than their identity. So you could say she's kinda a red herring. Rey's identity may actually be supposed to distract the fans from the real twist though.

I don't think so. People are just overthinking everything or see stuff which isn't even there.

Disney just wants our money. Haha! It's Lucasfilm who wants us to speculate about Rey.

Maybe. I'm just connecting the dots between those two ideas, though, and I could see Disney benefiting from this ambiguity, and even playing into it a bit.

Rey herself is the red herring to keep us from digging too deep into everything else.
Rey's Parents dominated Star Wars talk for 2 years.
    It overshadowed everything.

She's the shiny object in the magicians hand while he pulls off the trick with the other.

I don't disagree at all. But could this be bolstered by Disney constantly teasing possible parents?

I think Disney knows anytime a new female character is mixed in there will be an instant "OMG REY'S MOM" moment. I don't think they are intentionally doing it. Just enjoying the ride and having fun with it.

"You know, as soon as we announce an Obi-Wan movie the Rey Kenobi folks are gonna go bonkers" - Kennedy
"Yeah, we should probably mention his on again off again flame "Reya" in it lololol" - Bob Iger

    something like that probably.
