Some write it's too Earth-like, some it's too weird, ones say it's too much like TFA, others that Episode VIII isn't enough like previous SW films. All in all, they're screwed, no matter what they do :D

I know that what I will say may be considered peculiar but in my opinion The Force Awakens feels very different from previous Star Wars films and Rogue One and I'm not talking about the plot outline or basic characterization. While I really enjoy it, when I watch it alongside other movies from the series there is something in it that just makes it feel distinct from the others. It isn't the lack of Lucas' involvement, as Rogue One was created without it (except for that new helmet for the tank operator) and it still felt not similar but... akin to the original six. I know that it's based on nothing, but in my opinion Rian Johnson's entry into the franchise will feel much more like Episodes I-VI than Episode VII did.

Daisy saying it's different is a good thing.

Here is the problem. No matter what; if it's like the OT then it will get slammed fro being like the OT. If it isn't like the OT then it gets picked apart for not being like the OT. Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

I understand the concerns that you and others have raised. To me the Diner scene in AOTC is the single worst scene in the SW live-action canon. It's like something out of Space Balls (the robot waitress might as well be Joan Rivers), which was all about creating humor out of anachronisms (inserting banal contemporary stuff like blow dryers into the space opera cosmos of SW).

Like you, my preference is to avoid "contemporary-isms" that are too on-the-nose, such as the uniforms that say "PD" as in police department. Better to pivot just a little and use something like "guard unit" or "security force" (or just encrypt it via an alien language) so that everything evokes the universe of the movie rather than the universe outside the movie theater.

Having said that -- I'm curious to see how all of this feels in RJ's hands. In watching TLJ, these kinds of things may feel normalized within the fabric of the film, or they may feel normalized after a couple of viewings, similar to how names that sound totally off begin to grow on you (I feel this way about almost all SW character names -- Poe Dameron still sounds clumsy to me).

As long as the story doesn't echo the OT all the way through. Everything else is forgivable IMHO, an unoriginal story isn't.

I hated that diner scene too, but I watched AoTC for the first time in years this week and it didn't seem as bad, dare I say it's kind of grown on me.

I quite like it, actually. I find it quite charming, in it's way of portraying something that feels like am honest portrayal of normal, everyday Coruscanti activity. I also think Dexter Jetster is a great character. He literally has a lot of character; he has a personality totally different from the other characters in Star Wars. He's like an aged, ordinary guy trying to make a living. And I think it's appropriate for Obi-Wan Kenobi to be friends with somebody like that.

However, I do agree that a line can potentially be crossed, in terms of things being too Earth-like. I can see how that scene might feel that way to some people. I wouldn't want something in TLJ to feel too Earthy, but from everything I've seen, I think this is, in the total context of the film, just as Daisy said: different. It will feel like more of the Star Wars Galaxy has been opened up to the audience. Remember the way Looper felt. It was related to reality, but at the same time, it was definitely its own unique world.

I think the problem was not Dexter or what was said or done in the scene. I think for many people it was the "earthly" design of the dinner. It was too similar to American-style dinners. I expected that Richie, Potsie, Ralph Malph and the Fonz would walk in any moment.

Props to him for coming up with a way for Kylo to beat Rey that was believable.

Not sure I understand his ending though.

Rey and Kylo on the Falcon?
Luke confronting Snoke on the Star Destroyer but then the movie ends?
Leia going to see Luke at the end?

Some notes were original. Like Paige and others betraying only after they're captured.

And he does give the best explanation for "DJ."

Damn so it was b.sh.t. And just when it became interesting.

I mean Snoke's planet talk and that Snoke died before but changed body, and even his ..err..coffin.

I almost succumbed to the Dark side.

gosh this one was actually good

It was said in the VF article, the 5 things that won't be in TLJ, was a major creature ( sea monster ). That is what tipped it for me.
