Redesigning the Galaxy in IX

What the general design of the universe in IX should be like?

  1. predominantly similar to TFA/TLJ with some new elements

    There's a quite common criticism saying that the overall design of the ST doesn't feel new/different enough. We basically have Rebels 2.0 vs the Empire 2.0 when it comes to the way the costumes, ships and some of the locations/interiors look (like the D'Qar base, Starkiller Base, bridges of the capital ships etc.).

    With the almost certain time jump, J.J. has a second change to enrich the universe with some truly fresh stuff. For example, they basically have to design the new Rebellion from scratch. There's nothing left of the Resistance, after all. They have to find new sources of equipment and join forces with new allies, which creates endless possibilities.

    This is a GREAT opportunity. For instance, I'd love to see X-wings replaced by something else, maybe just loosely based on X-wings. The pilot outfits don't have to look exactly like OT. Why not something this different? It's also perfectly feasible for the reigning First Order to introduce some new toys. It's probably too late for a total revamp, but I hope there's going to be at least some kind of freshness there.

    I don't even have to mention the merch potential here...

    What do you think? What kind of new designs (characters, ships, outfits, weapons, locations, anything...) would you like to see in IX? Do you even want any kind of changes or should it stay very similar to what we see in TFA and TLJ (and OT by extension)? Would this movie, or the trilogy in general, suffer from a major turn so late in the game?

    With a 3-5 year time jump I don't expect many changes. That's not enough time for major changes.

    As @DailyPlunge already mentioned they won't be enough time for major changes. But there will be changes for sure. Especially on the side of the Resistance. They need new allies with new weapons and ships. The First Order will mostly look the same. Maybe Hux has a new weapon design or new Stormtroopers.

    The most changes will be for the characters though.

    It will mostly stay the same, but a good idea would be to start placing some new elements, that would be seem in the future movies or show as the timeline would go forward. Like new prototype fighters from the Evil Weapon Manufacturer X, or this new race of people who definetely not going to start any Wars at a Star someday. You know, like MCU.

    The episode IX will be centered in the unknown Regions of the galaxy.That is the change that will come.

    "Galaxy" is shifting to the unknown regions.This brings new stuff on many levels.J. J. Abrams said they are moving beyond ....

    Ahch-To planet is already in the unknown Regions.
    Disney is bulding Batuu, "edge of the galaxy" theme parks .
    New Canon novels are all about unknown Regions.
    This summer a Timothy Zahn's book Thrawn:Alliances is expected to bring interesting mission of Darth Vader and admiral Thrawn in the Batuu, exploring mysterious Force desturbance coming from Unknown Regions.

    And let me talke freedeom to speculate for my self : story about Rey has link with the Unknown Regions.

    I want to see more world-building. More planets, more cultures, more (also a few familiar) aliens and I want to see the battle taken to a big city (and see old planets too. Everything is new and feels a little disjointed with the OT and the prequels).

    I'm tired of natural scenarios and they ran out of options (desert-Jakku, forest-Takodana, island-Ahch-To, caverns-Crait).

    The Rebellion should have a new design and the FO should have similar aesthetics but with new troopers and (hopefully) the Knights of Ren.
