Remember when Kevin Smith said The Phantom Menace was his second favorite Star Wars film?

I like The Phantom Menace. What's your point? Did he say something recently?

I don't really see anything wrong with what he said. He was caught up in the excitement, and let himself not get hung up on the negatives and commit to bashing it outright. Keep in mind this is all personal taste, and TPM isn't really as awful as everyone says provided you don't go into it with mentality that it has to be perfect or it sucks. It opened the saga up to a new era that has actually proved quite popular, despite some misgivings about the directing or story points.

I can sympathize with Smith. When TPM came out I was blown away by the spectacle and the event. Sitting in a theater with people in costume cheering on every second. It wasn't until my 5th or 6th viewing that I allowed myself to start noticing there were aspects of the film I didn't like. I can still enjoy the film to this day, but my view of it has dropped significantly. Sometimes, in the moment, you don't notice the flaws of something because you want to be witnessing something spectacular.

Without trying to sound krass, I personally am not understanding the point of this thread. It is a question about a factual event, followed by a personal viewed answer.....it's almost not even a speculative and/or debateable subject. I feel like it's a "Remember when it was midnight in Kansas and it was dark also?" type of question...Sorry, but am I missing something?

In his recent review of TFA he explains that he thought it would be the last three Star Wars films. So he said he felt if this was it then it than that is how he graded it. Watch his YouTube review. I really like KS...... Good guy who has done a lot for fans over the years.

I think a lot of his love for TPM is because of the Duel of the Fates. He loves it, and you can't really blame him, still one of the best saber battles from any of the movies. Not enough reason to rate the entire movie so highly, but yeah, goes a bit of the way to explaining it.

30 years wait for a new starwars went a long way. Also, there where enough interesting things in the movie to tempt at better to come, whether this ultimately happened or not is subjective, i think had the 2nd been stronger, it would have reflected on phantom menace?

I made this thread to warn people "Don't get too hyped for TFA." as he'd also praised a film which many had a negative reaction to in the past.

He also praised Episode III with the same enthusiasm. Anyone remember his Clerks II where the Randall character makes fun of Lord of the Rings by crticizing that the most they do during the films is to walk?

I believe he was envious to some extent. Heck, I just watched the Hobbit Trilogy over the holidays and I'm still just as envious as I was during the LotR Trilogy...

I don't remember that, but I remember liking the movie even with the young Anakin and Jar Jar - as I liked all the movies and still think episode 4 is the best - I like them all - I wish the people who hate the PT would stop speaking for everyone else - and that people would think for themselves - most people do like all the movies anyways I think however the ones who don't are a loud and very vocal minority who talk over everyone else - so it seems that is the consensus -

When I see people here saying they have to wait a while to see if they like the new movie or not - while I can understand they may need to let it sink it I also think many are simply saying they are waiting to see what others think so they can be a follower and have others think for them and confirm their ideas.

I think the PT were awesome pretty much - sure I might do things differently and I think George should have really not cared what others think so much as he claims however he says he didn't but his actions speak louder than words - however I think other directors might have been a good idea - if he let them fully direct that is.

The PT is a complete epic fantasy - I think on its own it would have been great without the expectations - I didn't like Jar Jar at first and still don't really but realistically not everyone we meet is a super model per se nor smart and intelligent - in fact many aren't so if you want realism it makes sense to have a character like Jar Jar there - I do like the politics however the most unrealistic thing to me is the whole notion of Star Wars - this is what you get with a 20th century mind-set trying to tell a story of an advanced civilization - most likely any civilization which is that advanced will not have wars anymore at all.

Maybe the people who don't like Jar Jar hate seeing themselves in him.

I don't understand why Kevin is always a go-to guy to ask for opinions when things come out. I like some of his movies but everytime somethig comes out there's always an article about what he thinks about it.

Kevn Smith is a fanboy. He likes EVERYTHING no matter if it's good or bad, as long as it has the Star Wars mark on it.

I'm not saying that is a bad thing (a good enthusiasm is always welcome), but sure is not someone who can be asked for a constructive critical opinion. That is why JJ let him among the first to be on the set and to see the trailer earlier and the movie, because he knew Kevin wouldn't say anything but praise about the film.

I don't question Smith's love of SW, but you always have to take these comments with a grain of salt. I remember Patton Oswalt and other actor fanboys tweeted positive things after the premiere. Honestly if they're friends with JJ or get invited to the premiere, do you honestly think they'll bad mouth the movie?

That is why I try ignore their comments cause they're just being political as that's the way it works in Hollywood.

I enjoyed "The Phantom Menace". A lot of people did. What is the point? If you don't agree with his opinion, you don't agree. If you do, you do. It's all subjective anyway.
