According to a new report, Kathleen Kennedy has extended her contract to remain the President of Lucasfilm through 2021. There has been unsubstantiated buzz circulating this year about the future of Kennedy as the head of Lucasfilm, and if this report by The Hollywood Reporter is accurate, rumors of her exit can be swiftly put to rest.

Though more Star Wars films are coming, the immediate future of Star Wars appears to be in television via the upcoming Disney streaming service. While we love nostalgia and old familiar characters, it sounds like fresh stories and new characters on their way to a galaxy far, far away and now we know Kennedy will helm the transition from familiar stories to fresh ones.

Kennedy has been producing some of the greatest films of all time for the better part of four decades, and will continue to do so under the Lucasfilm umbrella through 2019's Episode IX and beyond. While it has not all been roses since George Lucas handed off his company in 2012, there is no question the level of overall success Kennedy has brought to the Star Wars franchise, which was otherwise dormant and dead before the 2012 merger.

Recent comments by Disney CEO Bob Iger indicate a re-thinking of the production plan for future Star Wars movie releases. THR reiterates what was previously confirmed by StarWars.com, Episode IX will conclude the Skywalker saga films:

The immediate future for Star Wars, according to THR's sources, looks to be heavily focused beyond the silver screen:
It is quite possible we have just scratched the surface on the amount of Star Wars content we'll receive once Disney's streaming service launches next year.
Lucasfilm was revitalized after the sale to Disney, and there is no argument that overall the product produced has been extremely successfully and well received. We know what to expect from Episode IX, it's familiar, it's home. The question is where does Star Wars go once it's time to say goodbye to the Skywalkers? At least we know who will be steering the ship through the transition from nostalgia and familiarity to our next adventures with new characters, and we couldn't think of anyone more polished and successful to lead the way than one of the most legendary film producers of all time, Kathleen Kennedy.

    A few thoughts:

    • If true seems like probably a wise decision, I think Kennendy has done a great job putting together Rogue One and Solo after all the production issues. She also managed to guide Star wars back to the big screen in what was by all accounts quite a rushed scedule insisted upon by Disney going by Bob Igers comments
    • But thier having been mistakes made, Director choices, and the lack of planning going into these films been the main two. Hopefully this has been learned from we all make mistakes in a new job, hopefully they will bring someone in to work with Kennedy who can be in charge of the creative direction on Star Wars as this doesn't seem to be her strong point, While she handles the business side of things.
    • I would also add the main sourse for this news is the Hollywood reporter, thier track record over the last year with star wars news is about 50/50.
    • Finally I'd like to wish Kennendy luck. She has one group having ago at her for forcing her libreal views on Star wars, another accusing her of been racist for only hiring white female leads and another her are been sexist towards her for been a woman..... So good luck Kathleen your gonna need it!

Really great news. There is no one better than her to lead LF. Hope it is for many many more years. I am not a big fan of TLJ but it doesn't mean she is not one of the best producers ever (if not the best). For my concern, TFA, RO and Solo are brilliant. Glad she is the president of LF. Great decision.

This was a smart move by Lucasfilm to get this out in the press. The vocal minority is going to be outraged for the forseeable future, but it good to not let them drive the narrative. Lucasfilm isn't in trouble. Audiences have overwhelming enjoyed 3 out 4 of the Kennedy led Star Wars films. Heck, that's a better hit rate than Lucas had with his first three Star Wars films.

I do think there's going to be a bit of a reboot after Episode IX. Lucasfilm has a huge Asia issue with their films and it's not going to get better with more saga films. Whatever the Game of Throne guys are working on will likely be promoted as a brand new story that doesn't require people to watch 9 films.

Stories from the saga era probably belong on TV.

I'm excited to see what the next series is going to be about... it's the biggest risk Lucasfilm has taken. I'm not sure what they can do about growing the audience overseas.

I think this is their smartest move.

While a vocal minority has called for her head on a pike, she knows what Star Wars is...she was Georges personal choice as his successor for a reason.

I think that with TFA, it was fresh and brand new so it basically went off without a hitch, but afterwards the galaxy expanded into further saga movies, anthology movies, and now TV shows and further non-saga trilogies, and it kind of turned into a futile effort to herd a bunch of drunken squirrels and the issues then began.

I have little doubt that Disney/LFL are fully aware of what went "wrong" and know that she's the one that can corral the chaos and drive forward...she's a professional that knows the story and the empire that she now oversees...she learned directly from the Star Wars God himself, and they know she can do it.

Congrats KK, now let's get to work.

I am glad. Generally I wouldn't have any feelings either way, but all the hate she gets put me right into her corner. Congratulations to her and good luck. I hope she gets all the backup she needs.

Am glad she will be able to see her trilogy through. It's a bitter sweet feelings for me. I loved TFA, R1, forces of destiny. Can't stand TLJ, haven't seen Solo. But she's back for IX I hope her and JJ smash it out of the park. There are some real nasty undertones developing across social media at the moment. Am glad she's been able to bat through it all. Got to give her credit, she's one hell of a strong woman.

I'm at best resigned to this. George Lucas was the primary creative drive behind Star Wars, replacing him was always going to be problematic and for me The Force Awakens did not have what i loved about Star Wars in it, it didn't have the mythic (even spiritual) under-pining. I do think that Kennedy needs to stay until the Sequel Trilogy is through, that was started under her watch and should be ended under hers.
With that Trilogy finished I hope they get someone else, who takes Star Wars somewhere else, I don't know if I'll warm to a new direction but the current direction has nothing for me.
Clone Wars is the only bright spot on the horizon and that was George and Dave Filoni's baby, still at least they allowed that to happen.

If anything, they should be happy. It means that they'll have stuff to whine about for another three years for them to exploit YouTube's algorithms to get cheap ad revenue, presuming that that well hasn't run dry by that point.

Good! Disney has a backbone, now announce that Rian's trilogy is still a green light. Notice that everyone who was calling for her head is staying away from this thread..lol

If Kennedy had any sense, she would stick with stand alone films.

They don't need to re-announce anything. Last they said, he has a movie that will serve as the basis for its own trilogy. Last he said, he's gonna get to work on it after doing a murder mystery movie with Daniel Craig. To make another statement about the movies, if anything, would give off the impression that something's up.

Also, if Kennedy is sticking in her position for another three years and Iger is good with her there, then there's no reason to presume that Johnson's movies are going anywhere because it's thanks to the two of them that it's on the menu to begin with.
I think that people are making a mistake in presuming that just because these other series will be a focus for the company, that it must mean that all the standalone movies are cancelled. That ain't how it works.
