Question time: Did Sidious have a larger role in any earlier drafts or versions of Attack of the Clones? Palpatine only gets 3 true scenes in the final film as chancellor (and stands on the balcony overlooking the clones at the end), and one scene as Darth Sidious, following the Geonosis lightsaber fight. It's always a bit strange watching the prequels, because Sidious shows up a lot throughout Phantom Menace and has a huge role in Revenge of the Sith, but he might as well not be there in Attack of the Clones, even if he is pulling the strings.

Since both @kb93 and @Lord of the Rens forgot to post this, I guess I will :p. Some really early concept art for Darth Plagueis. He was originally envisioned as a Neimoidian.

Notice how he had a breathing apparatus throughout the whole concept phase.

Hmm, looks like it could be from a droid scene or the final duel.

It appears to show the Sith "tats" being made from mini-saber "burns" instead.
At least that's how I look at that fanart.

    The sequence was cut.

That image was buried within the bonus DVD, if I recall correctly.

@Alex Sebire, watch this from 6:25-7:15. I think this is that scene. I also think the dialogue got recycled into the scene where Windu says, "I don't think the boy can handle it" (if I'm remembering correctly).

Also, notice the "temp music" for the scene is that suspenseful music that plays a lot in Ep. II. I wonder if this means it would have showed up in Ep. III as tracked-in music?

    Yes, that looks like it.

Yeah, I thought that too the first time I watched it.

Totally agree. This is one of the reasons the prequels don't work.

Firstly, splitting up Anakin and Obi Wan during clones was a mistake. We needed to see how close they were, we needed to see them on a mission together prior to the clone wars. TCW does a great job of showing their relationship but that was after the fact.

We needed to see more of Anakin and Palpatine's relationship. We needed to see old Palps subtly influencing him from the outset. There could have been conflict sewn in Anakin between the two views, both competing for his mind, and not just oh your wife is gonna die better join the dark side.

Of course this leaves less time to show the conflict in Anakin over his love for Padme, which is why starting episode 1 with kiddie Anakin was a dumb idea. There you could have had teenage anakin Falling for this senator and the love story could have been spread out over the three films instead of being crammed into the middle.

I always thought that...I should probably go back to the re-write of the second prequel and pick up where I let off. I should however go back to the first one and see what I can fix up.

This! Could have easily used AOTC as Episode I and then another film, Ep. II, showing Anakin and Padme's wartime romance. Although the podracing is cool, it did nothing for any other character other than Anakin, who we will enjoy throughout the prequels anyway. Even Padme was annoying on her scenes on Tatooine in Ep. I.

Well, I was nine months into the Cantina when this thread was launched, and I enjoyed it a lot back then. I wasn’t so big into the PT so I never sought after source material to get into the picture regarding those backgrounds. But it was an amazing read and lots of interesting revelations for me you guys put up there.

So from time to time this thread comes to my memory as it still holds lots of wisdom, especially when meeting further geeks around here that are so well versed in Star Wars history like @Lt. Hija among others.

Wow discovering all of this makes me more of a fan then before, thanks. This is why I love Star Wars! OT, PT, Standalones, ST, Clone Wars, Rebels, Dark Horse, Marvel, Disney and beyond. I can't express my love for this franchise much more then that. The 7 year old kid that saw the ANH trailer on my living room floor, way back in 1977 is still alive and well.

Been this way for years: TFN is a shadow of its former self.

I retired from MOD life once and for all because of that wretched hive of Dumb and Stupidity.
So, I'm grateful for the Cantina, because TFN's collective sense of entitlement does exist here.

This is a really neat thread! Coming from someone who loves ROTS, and is a huge fan of the prequel era both in and out of universe, this has a lot of interesting information I hope to see it get more active again!

Okay, just for you @The Hero With No Fear :D. Jar Jar originally had a pet dog, who was going to accompany him. The species later made their way back into canon as Blarths; laid-back creatures who desired attention.
