OKay, first I want to get this out of the way... I am okay with it.

I dont think the Starkiller was a good idea, but I think taht the fact that they used its function too their advantage to destroy it helped make up for its existence.

Now onto the actual thread... herer is what I think the Starkiller could have been.

The Starkiller could have been, an orbital nightcloak type weapon. A shield that would have encompassed the whole planet plunging it into darkness and trapping the Republic Fleet within it. (and it can still be called a Starkiller since it blocks all starlight)

Thus leaving the Senate to slowly die from the inside of it as the planet freezes below. This would have allowed them to have everything they wanted, including an ice planet darkness battle.

Imagine the REsistance fleet slowly falling apart as they narrowly destroy the Starkiller base, the republic fleet emerging from under the shield and beating the hell out of the first order fleet.

Imagine the Dual with Kylo starting with an epic escape pod plummet too the planet (would nto have been too bad of a call back to A New Hope, a scene often forgotten is the escape pod plummet)

PErhaps Kylo even almost Winning the duel, except for Chewbacca arriving in the falcon to shoot giant space lasers at him....

If done properly, I think that if they had used an orbital nightcloak type weapon as the starkiller instead of a space laser I think it would have resolved most of the problems that people had with the film.

When I first saw the official The Force Awakens poster and took a good look at it, I was like, "Huh... that almost looks like that could be another Death Star."

Then I convinced myself, "Nah! They wouldn't possibly bring back another Death Star!"

Then I saw the movie and realized it was in fact the "next big thing" (literally) after the second and larger Death Star II.

While it served its purpose in the movie, I still wonder if they might have been better doing something more innovative -- something like what you've described above.

I know the Empire, and now the First Order, would have a variety of arguably good reasons to continue with such designs, but, now that they've lost the third one, maybe they will begin to rethink that approach.

Maybe they might have felt the freezing part (of what you described) might have taken too long to manifest realistically / appreciably within the rapid pacing of the film.

Well, I don't know what they have in mind for Episode VIII, but I hope it's not simply Starkiller II :)

I think Snoke's calm reaction to the loss of the base was noteworthy, and perhaps it means little to him for a certain reason (e.g. he has more of them, doesn't really need them, or sees them as expendable within his larger agenda yet to be unveiled).

Maybe they have something they'll be pulling out of the Unknown Regions, where they developed SK base:

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Unknown_Regions
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Starkiller_Base

The First Order Fleet itself is described as smaller than the old Empire's Imperial Navy:
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/First_Order_fleet

Maybe Snoke is going to reveal something special, or Kylo will be able to mind-freeze an entire fleet...

...or maybe the Knights of Ren get more involved now?

If this trilogy follows the last, in terms of structure, there might be no super-duper technology to confront until possibly the third episode (e.g. DS2 in ROTJ).

Or maybe by then (Episode IX) its down to Luke + Rey + whoever else vs. whoever are the dominant Dark Side characters at that point.

I said something a bit ago about how SKB is actually just a piece of a bigger weapon so nothing is lost and nothing is gained from this particular base for a The a first Order .

Well, wow, that must be huuuuuuuuge

As Wedge Antilles would have said,
"Look at the size of that thing!"

Just a piece -- no wonder Snoke was like, "Oh, I see, well, go fetch Kylo" to Hux. :)

(Although, in the novelization, it was said Snoke was "furious" after oscillator failed and the collapse began.)

Well, now I'm thinking I might just have to consider seeing the next episode in IMAX!

I dont think we are going to see another big weapon of mass destruction in VIII. Probably they will follow the steps of TESB and show Rey's training with Luke and if.we get lucky they will show.also Snoke training Kylo.
