    SPOILERS FOR KOTOR!!

So this theory has LITERALLY NO backing up; it was just something I thought of when looking at Revan's mask and thinking of Kylo Ren's, so my thesis, speculation, and proof are not going to be real present. And then I read @Revanite's AMAZING theory about Anakin, Ren, and Arthurian legend, so yeah, I'm probably incredibly off base here, but I wanted to get the idea out of my head...

So we know that in the overall scheme of things, Disney and Star Wars have placed little emphasis on The Old Republic timeframe and characters. Sure, they have the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion coming out (and I'm TOTALLY going to play that!), but that seems like a disjoint compared to the last one. KotFE moves away from the previous two campaigns that focused on Revan, and while the Star Wars execs KNOW that Revan is a fan favorite, they refuse to add him in the new Canon in any meaningful way. But what if it wasn't because they didn't want to add the character in, but the character was being retooled? What if Kylo Ren's arc is a reboot of Revan's arc and Revan's character?

In certain aspects, Star Wars is nothing if not predicable. Like Episode IV and I before it, I imagine that The Force Awakens will end with the bad guys being defeated and some sort of celebration will happen. But rather than all of the bad guys being defeated like in The Phantom Menace, what if JJ decides to have Kylo lose his final fight and seemingly die? By powers unknown to me, Kylo loses his memory. This would allow a new Force User antagonist to enter the scene, or maybe Supreme Leader Snoke himself (if he is a Force User). The Knights of Ren would end up investigating the disappearance of one of their own, and that could help viewers understand more about this mysterious order than just the one member we've seen so far.

An amnesiac Kylo Ren would be brought to a Force User to be retrained, and then Kylo Ren's true heritage and history would be revealed.

Now the problem with this theory is that it's based entirely off of a mask and would make the Ep VIII feel more like the start of a trilogy rather than a middle piece. And the fact that's there's not one shred of evidence (but it makes fun speculation).

And then I just had an idea. What if it wasn't Kylo Ren who was the Revan retool, but Finn? What if Finn was part of the Knights of Ren? This could be the surprise in Episode VIII and explain why Kylo Ren is so bent on finding him, rather than just for an artifact. I also (unwillingly) heard a rumor that Finn might already have sword skills - maybe that was how he gained them? As for how Finn then was cut off from the Force, I have no idea, but maybe it was the work of an outsider.

Either way, this is just some crazy thoerizing on a Friday night. But what do y'all think? Did you like it? Were you amused? Is it crazy? Am I crazy? Do you have an idea you want to put out there? Thanks, and Let me know!

Crazy late-night theories are the best!!!

I'm slightly confused. But it sounds like you are suggesting that Kylo Ren was one of if not the "Original Ren" of sorts and somehow he finds this out in the movie. If that were the case, I would 10000% be on board with that! That would be a real game changer and that is what made KOTOR so great.

I really question Finn being anyone but a man looking to redeem himself at this point. I think that it's possible. But almost definitely not gonna happen.

Of course, there could be a throwback to Revan in Kylo Ren, but it could also be 'accidental'. I mean, there is not many ways to pull off an evil space knight, remenicent of Darth Vader (obviously), wearing a mask and dark hooded robes without going to silly extremes. My bet is that these bad guys (from the SW franchise and others) look similar due to the limited range of the general concept - this is convergent evolution in mythology ;)

Fetts original design was leaning on Vader and Revan is wearing a mandalorian mask. Kylo is not wearing a mask its a helmet and JJ said it's a nod to Vader's Design. I wouldn't read to much into it, saying that Bioware can go with it's Kotor stuff but it's not even close to canon was one of the first things Lucasfilm said after the EU deletion.

I like this theory but problem is I think it would annoy the majority of SW fans because we all have played KOTOR. For the people that haven't, that would certainly be an amazing twist but for everyone else it'd just feel like too much of a rehash? As cool as it sounds I would feel slightly robbed if that were the case. I want something original! I think we will get it too. I don't actually think Kylo has any sort of lineage connection to any characters we already know.

Black hooded coat, some kind of mask on face and black robes makes for very traditional "sith-ish" look used by many Dark Side users.

    Arguably, even by Luke.

So yeah, besides somewhat similar look I wouldn't look for any connection between Revan and Kylo.

Yup, I was suggesting that Kylo is part of a group rather than a lone force. And I agree with you on Finn and everyone else about Kylo not being connected to Revan, but I think there may be some intentional references in there. No more late night theories for me haha :)

Too convoluted. It doesn't make sense for him to lose his memory after TFA and then have all this other stuff happen to him in the next film(s), especially with what we know so far. What is the point of it? Maybe if he started the film with his memory erased, but I believe he knows exactly who he is and who he is related to.
Same goes for Finn. It's too complicated a story. It makes for a smoother arc that he is just a trooper who realized how horrible the First Order is and is now pursuing the Light Side while fleeing the Dark. One of the biggest problems with the EU, IMO, was the over-complicated plotlines.

For all we know at the moment, the Knights of Ren could be a sect of revanchists who follow Revan's teachings.

Kylo Ren's appearance is a ripoff of Revan. I know it, you know it, JJ knows it and Disney knows it. Luckily for me.. I always wanted the villain to look just like Revan so i'm very happy.

Actually, I hardly know who Revan is, so no, I don't know that Kylo Ren is a rip-off off him. Personally, I'm aware of the Revan character only because his fans talk about him alot, and I have therefore seen the pictures (I gather it is from one of the computer games). I don't think JJ & Co ripped off a computer game at all, although I acknowledge that since both TFA and the game(s?) belonge to the same franchise, there is going to be similarities - dark side user, in robes & hood, with badass helmet/mask = Revan/Kylo Ren/several others.

Awesome original theory, I love it!

In the back of my mind though I still feel the Knights of Ren are some type of knock off of jedi cults who followed the sith teaching of pre-rule of two, so anytime before Darth Bane. So they seem like they're influenced from the knights of Revan or somewhat ancient Sith teachings, which results in his relic hunting.

I would almost place money that JJ is a fan of the KOTOR series, I know he's big into the Half-Life games (he may be producing/adapting a Half-Life movie) so its very possible.

Here is an interview with JJ and Gabe Newell (Half-Life creator) comparing the pros and cons of movies and video games.

I can't believe I forgot to add that I believe Rey has amnesia in TFA. I won't go any further in case of spoilers.

I've never played the KOTOR either, but it's pretty hard to deny that the designers took inspiration from Revan's look. Revan was very close to being canon in The Clone Wars along with Bane (who now is canon) until a last minute change from George about how Force Ghosts work. The only reason he isn't canon is because of this change that had nothing to do with who the character was, but a plot point.

Here is the Clone Wars character design sheet.

Damon Lindelof and JJ Abrams are both on record as massive Bioware, Valve and Irrational fans. There's no need to speculate about it. :)

Forget about the masks for a second. What if Rey is actually Revan. She lost her memory and doesn't remember being a Sith/Knight of Ren. Kylo is actually her master and when he learns she's alive he goes after her. As the events unfold and she's shown a vision from Maz, she realizes she's committed unthinkable acts and runs off to be alone with this revelation. When Kylo captures her and tries to read her thoughts (to see what she remembers) her memory comes rushing back. When the final battle ensues, she defeats Kylo with the light saber. Conflicted, she tries to stay loyal to Finn and company, and she ends up going with Chewie to return the light saber to Luke. When she arrives and sees Luke, she loses it. She ignites her saber and Luke ignites his. The two battle ( which is why there were stunt doubles on Skellig) and Luke wins and Rey narrowly escapes.

I like everything (though I don't think it is the case) except the fight with Luke. I think she will be his apprentice in the next film. Having her see herself committing dark acts is a nice explanation of why she runs off, but it doesn't make sense that her companions would still trust her after that.

What about Finn ? What if Finn is the only one trained by Luke. Rey rejects the force as to not be tempted and turn again. She joins Chewie and becomes the new Han of the trilogy.

There may be something to this. I was reading the excerpts from the journey of to the force awakens. The opening crawl of the book "Lost Stars" starts off by saying.
" Eight years after the fall of the old republic" I know that KOTOR and TOR are not considered canon, but it's interesting that they called it the old republic and not he Republic. I wonder if they are going to change some of the timeline back story on the Republic.
