Excuses if this has already been brought up, and I'm thinking you are already aware of it.

Seems there has been in an influx of bots creating new advertising posts in the Cantina. At first it was a trickle here and there but now it almost seems daily there is a new bot-post. Why, about an hour ago there was yet another bot post... in the main page for the Blog and Forum Feedback section at that!

I can't remember what the registration process is. I could've sworn there was some sort of anti-bot protection though.

Unfortunately these are not bots. We have an anti-spam system, but most of the time the spam threads you see, have been posted by real persons.

Sigh, I was afraid it would be that. These people are quite persistent to invade our little website.

Yes, I've done that for quite a few of them, slacked off a bit recently though. I'll keep it up. ;)

Just for the record we are using the StopForumSpam software and also we have an e-mail verification for each registration. This means that these are not simple bots. They always go thorough the problem of creating new mails, change IPs and sign again. Still we're considering other actions to make them stop.

I, for one, welcome our new spammer overlord. And yes, I'd love a psychic reading from India. How did you know?

It's actually gotten really bad recently. I use the "new posts" feature to navigate through the, uh... new posts... and currently the newest legit post has been pushed midway down page 2, and the next one after that is on page 4. Pretty much the same guy that's been spamming here for the past week. I know the staff is taking care of them as soon as they can, but I wonder what can be done about guys like this who are particularly tenacious?

Like they had that nuclear attack slogan in the 50's called "Duck and cover!" , we can have one that says "Report and ignore!" ;)

Just ignore the member/spammer and it totally un-spamms the forum again and you can go back to obsessing about TFA like nothing happened.

For the record, I think the mods are doing a pretty good job on this. These spammers are quick, generally posting 10+ threads within a space of minutes, which is how the "new posts" page gets jammed up. The other day I saw that happen I reported all, and within probably a space of a minute all of them disappeared.

Maybe there's a way to impose limits to how many threads a user can post within a period of time, like... 3 within 20 minutes (random numbers)? If it could be worked out, you could possibly even have the limit removed after they've proven they're an actual member after some criteria has been reached. That way newbies can still post threads but it could at least cut down on spammers posting without having to create new accounts to continue.

A very, very good idea. Like, people with less than 10 non-spam posts (that are not just 'I agree, mate' and similar) can only open one thread within 24 hours. That way, newbies can open new threads and the spammers cannot clog the forums.

But, I don't know if that is possible. Maybe it will complicate moderators' already complicated jobs. ¯\(°_o)/¯

Yeah, I don't manage forums or anything like that, so I wasn't sure about the implementation as well. Could be that the way we have it now is the best way (and the clogging-up seems to only happen from time-to-time anyways).
