Wow! This is a great start to the series. In the SW films Princess Leia, has always been known as a badass. She survives torture droids, back talks Darth Vader, shoots out stormtroopers, and chokes Hutts to death. We always knew we were watching someone in action who also was not afraid to embrace her femininity. Mark Waid, this series writer, has begun to flesh out the nuance of everything that makes Leia Organa such a critical part of the Star Wars saga.

    Screenshot_1.jpg

The story picks up literally the second after A New Hope ends. As soon as everyone is done patting each other on the back about blowing up the Death Star a few hard truths set in: the Rebels lost a lot of people in the fight, Alderaan and Bail Organa are dead, and the Empire knows where they are. General Dodonna is wasting know time in starting his search for a new base, and overseeing the packing job is a certain Mon Calamari admiral we know.

    Screenshot_2.jpg

Dodonna is adamant that Leia remain under his watch. She wants to assist in scouting potential worlds to build a new base, but the general bluntly lets her know she is the most wanted person in the galaxy. That's right...at this point the Empire blames Leia for the destruction of the Death Star. Not Luke, not Han. The general's orders are for her to stay put.

The Empire is also rounding up any surviving Alderaanians around the galaxy and giving them the "Imperial treatment". Dodonna prefers Leia stay and hide out for her own safety, predictably she feels otherwise.

    Screenshot_3.jpg

To help Leia out, we meet a female Rebel pilot named Evaan. She also hails from Alderaan and mistakes Leia's composure as a cold and detached "Ice" Princess, and the two don't really hit it off until they realize they might be the only ones who can protect the survivors of Alderaan.

Against orders, the two of them set off from Yavin IV, being pursued by two X-Wing pilots you will also recognized. The first issue ends on a pretty stunning cliffhanger when we find out the first planet Leia and Evaan are heading towards, and what significance it holds for Leia.

    Screenshot_5.jpg

The art by Terry and Rachel Dodson is great, and this story is really starting to dig in to a character we already know a lot about but may have never read the fine print. I'm excited that the Strory Group is giving Leia a chance to find out more about who she really is so when Luke makes his big reveal in ROTJ we know the dots Leia is connecting in her head.

One more thing. With the disappointing development of Hasbro not creating any toys based upon female Star Wars characters, I strongly urge the Story Group to continue the momentum this issue is beginning with putting the spotlight on more female characters. Hasbro's folly was a pretty big slap in the face to female fans, as well as fans in general. Whether we like it or not, Star Wars has always been perceived to be a boys club. Star Wars is not a boys club. That is not true now and I don't believe it has ever been. I don't mean to go off on a rant here, but going forward I hope the Story Group gives more spotlight to the wealth of female characters we all know and love in the SW universe. *cough* *cough* Asohka Tano *cough*

Thanks for the review @Kyle. The pics are up.
I also enjoyed this issue. I like that it feels really original. We don't have any "in your face" references from the movies, like the other comics. And the end is really intriguing.

I can see this mini-series ending right where Star Wars #1 begins. All of these new comics have been solid, thanks for the review!

Edit: speaking of Star Wars seeming like it is a boys-only club, this comic passes the bechdel test thankfully.

I think the Comics have been great. My only complaint with this one is I do not like how Akbar was written, and I usually have a difficult time coming up with something I don't like (the initial intro of Ahsoka is another one of those moments).

This was a good comic (not great, but good). I enjoyed it and look forward to the other 4 issues, but I’m glad it’s a miniseries as I don’t see this working as an ongoing series. It doesn’t compare with the impressiveness of “Star Wars” and “Darth Vader”…still…not bad.

@NDCAtokR I agree about Ackbar. The writer of this comic must have experience writing J. Jonah Jameson from Spider-man. Lol.

I didn't really like the interactions with Luke. His character was very awkward and even threatening to Leia in the second interaction, but, eh, this one just didn't feel to capture the essence of the characters the same way Darth Vader and Star Wars have. It felt like I was watching a cartoon of Star Wars more than another movie adventure. I will definitely keep reading to see what happens, but I do feel like the characters were a little too over the top for my taste and that sort've immersed me less into the world of Star Wars as I read it. Good review!

I really enjoyed Princess Leia but I do agree that the Star Wars ones were better. Also Leia doesn’t look like Carrie Fisher at all. That’s not to say the graphics are bad, I would just like it more if the characters did look like the actors. Anyway, for anyone who is interested I made another audio comic book video for this one (or just a comic book video if you want to mute it and read it) for fun so check it out and let me know what you think. I’m not sure if I will keep making them yet as I make them in a format that I like to watch but I I’m not sure if anyone else does.

Just need some advice - I have not bought comics since the 80's - my last one was the final issue of Star Wars in, I think, '84, '85. I purchased a subscription for this series (Princess Leia) right after it was announced. I see that #2 is already out and I have not received #1 yet. Last week it showed pending on my Marvel account page and now it shows shipped but I still have not received it. Is this normal for a subscription? I sent an email to Marvel and haven't received a reply. Since I've been out of the comic book loop for 30+ years - is this normal? Should I give it a few more weeks? I'm in the US too. Thanks!

I've never subscribed directly from Marvel, but that definitely sounds weird. I'd say give it another week and keep trying to contact customer service. After that I'd cancel and subscribe at a comic shop or internet shop. You may end up being out $8+ shipping, but at least you wouldn't be 4 weeks behind everyone else, if that's the norm for Marvel shipping. Complain, maybe you'll get some free stuff. Let us know how you made out.

Finally read the first 2 issues of this series tonight, enjoyed it more than star wars, or Darth Vader, seemed to be a lot more content per issue.

Only thing i didnt like was how Admiral Ackbar was portrayed, as someone else previously mentioned
