In all honesty, I do think that there is a great film buried somewhere underneath AotC, it sadly gets lost in the poor performances and execution though. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the PT works great on paper for the most part, it's the execution that holds it back.

I like the Arena scene. Padme is badass in it. Across the Stars is one of the best motifs in Star Wars. Yoda. After that. I think all the Star Wars movies made are better than that one. Not a prequel hater though, I think ROTS is one of the best made.

Offhandedly, can I just say how even more effective posts are with gifs in them? Scrolling through, I immediately stopped at *this* post, because of the gif. *chuckling*

Padmé kicking butt in the arena during AotC is actually leads to one of my biggest beefs about RotS: She goes from being this proactive character to little more than a plot device who solely exists to give Anakin a reason to turn to the Dark Side, and then die to make everybody feel sad.

I guess Lucas was trying to echo Luke's attempt to reach out to Vader from RotJ, but Padmé just comes off as horribly passive, and almost sounds like she's trying to appeal to an abuser.

I hear you. It's like she is just this upset barefoot and pregnant helpless woman. There is a bit of talking in the Senate, but she is not quite the same person she was in the earlier film. The Clone Wars cartoon, she is really cool as well. I like how in the new Aftermath Life Debt we get a hungry, hormonal, angry and pregnant Princess Leia putting together an illegal military operation and kicking ass. It can be done.

I just wish Padmé had a bit more agency at the end of RotJ. Yes, Luke tried to reach out his father, but his mentality was very much "succeed or die." I didn't get the sense that Padmé realized what might just happen to her. It would've made her death a bit more tragic.

That was the original plan Lucas had, but he decided to merge the prologue with the Anakin storyline. The first episode was also going to originally start off during The Clone Wars and Anakin would have lost body parts over the films, slowly becoming "more machine now than man".
That's like saying no offense, but your shoes suck. Saying no offense doesn't change what you just said, all you did was give them a verbal warning :p.

In an early draft she was going to try to kill Anakin with a dagger, but he kisses her and she can't do it, lol :D.

Now THAT would be cool. Having her just fight back a bit. I hated her whole death scene. There should have been more to it. We can't find any reason for it, but she just gave up, but well we got to get these babies out. There is that theory about Palps draining her lifeforce, and if they indicated that, I would buy it, broken heart just doesn't do it. She had two babies and she is going to give up? The med droid could have given her some illness, that I would buy. That whole thing was the dumbest thing about ROTS and I think in general it's a good movie.

Interestingly, according to the book How Star Wars Conquered the Universe, part of the reason that Padme was nerfed so to speak, was because Natalie Portman was being a royal pain on set, particularly during AotC. Therefore George decided to make her barefoot and pregnant, that way he didn't have to deal with her as much while directing RotS.

She sounds pretty immature. There's a reason she's not in Thor Ragnarok. They probably had enough of her, because she apparently held a grudge against Marvel because Patty Jenkins left the directors chair on Thor: The Dark World due to creative differences, and she's Portman's friend. Portman apparently spent alot of time convincing them to consider her for the role.

This makes sense cause Portman said a few years ago she could not get any work after she won a Razzie for AOTC. I forget who she said vouched for her, but that person helped her get the part in 'Closer' which supposedly jump started her career again.

I think she mailed it in for ROTS, except her scenes with Ewan McGregor.

Sounds like she's looking for something to blame. Anyone who bothered to watch those films could easily see she was not the problem, and there's plenty of actors who have won Razzies and still got work as well as delivering good performances in other films.

I could have dealt with her dying of complications from the pregnancy, or even injuries related to getting Force-choked.

most of the actors have more recently been "kinder" about their experience working with Lucas on the PT, but they were notoriously unhappy when in production, so this doesn't surprise me, though it does make me sad because whatever happened, it ruined Padme, regardless of whose fault it was.

and frankly, when a director decides to fridge their lead actress rather than make the movie work, that's pretty petty and inconsiderate to both the fans and the remaining cast and crew. meh. many movies have had to weather bad blood and worked out in spite of it. it's part of the job.

But if she's being a real hassle and bullying other actors on-set like she supposedly did to Kiera Knightley during The Phantom Menace, then I can understand why Lucas would want to get rid of her as much as possible whilst maintaining continuity. Everyone has a limit, and I guess George had reached his :).

Case in point - Mad Max:Fury Road. Hardy and Theron did not get along on set, but somehow, Miller made that thing rock out.
