How do you know that? :D

[qoute]It's clear that the Jedi were sent to negotiate since they are a neutral party (I think),[/quote]
They were on naboo's side actually.

But that's only if people discovered their horribly burned docking bay.

The childish characters are in supporting roles, so looking at it as a "children's movie" primarily makes no sense in the first place.

I bet your "improved editing" would end up looking rushed and choppy lmao

Put Jar Jar and Aaannieee aside and i really enjoy EP1,
so relaxing, also i like the atmosphere of tatooine and naboo.

I quite enjoy TPM and, as someone mentioned above, at times it is the best of the prequels.

For me, it has two main problems. Firstly, it's unevenly edited - some sections move too slowly, some too quickly. The pace of the film, unsurprisingly, works best in the final act where the action beats work well. The first act is too quick on the whole and the second act too slow.

The second problem is the uneven tone - the actual story is possibly the most mature and complex of all the Star Wars films - it deals with slavery, politics, corruption, taxation, letting go of attachments and so on. Which is all great! For some reason, a lot of the film then has the trappings of a children's film which is completely at odds with the story its trying to tell. Lucas had always felt Star Wars was a childrens film, but they were all crafted so that anyone could enjoy them - especially A New Hope. TPM loses sight of this at times but it still has an awful lot going for it.

There were just too many things about TPM for me to get any joy out of re-watching it. I watched all 6 before R1 and ended up skipping around parts of ep I and II.
But I will always watch the duel of the fates.

    The Phantom Menace..
18 years and that film still conjures conflict within. So many 'babies'.. yet so much 'bathwater.'
I was a fan of a very different approach to Star Wars when I saw this 1999 than I am today. I didn't really look at movies the same way I do today.
But you know what.. TPM is responsible for me enjoying my third stint in this fandom. I was just minding my own business when my boss' son at the time asked me how to defeat this level of Angry Birds Star Wars. I told him he had to drop the purple balls on the Droid tank because that's what they did in the movie. He asked "Movie?". I fired up YT and played the Naboo battle sequence. Within two hours he and his brother were having a lightsaber duel with improvised objects. The came a thousand questions and suddenly I felt like this:

All is as the Force wills it, I suppose.

I've watched the film many times since first seeing it at the cinema. My opinion hasn't really changed too much since that first viewing. I think it's a breezy, innocent and charming adventure very much in the mold of the traditional Saturday morning kid's flick. The film is longer now since the theatrical and VHS version and I think that is sometimes to the detriment of the pacing (I say 'sometimes' because I watched it again recently and the pacing didn't bother me; and let's not forget, the first three films had their own pacing issues, too).

And while those scenes in the Senate might not make a great deal of sense to the film's target audience (in the same way as the mention of the Emperor disolving the Senate in A New Hope never made any sense to me as a six year old kid), I have no doubt that the same audience will still be watching The Phantom Menace in ten, fifteen, twenty years' time and at that point they'll understand all of Palpatine's machinations and appreciate the story on a whole new level.

Thank you! I've always looked at the prequel films from Palpatine's stand point, especially when you watch The Phantom Menace. His plotting and patience have been my main defense for explaining why I don't hate this movie at all.

Good for you. When I saw Star Wars for the first time, I saw the Prequels first and fell in love with them, as well as the OT. However, with each subsequent viewing I like them less and less but still, I watch them on annual basis when I do my SW marathon every summer. They are essential parts of Star Wars legacy, no matter if we like it or not.

There are a lot of detractors from not just the Phantom Menace, but the prequels as a whole, and I think I can possibly explain to a degree about what happened behind the scenes with them that isn't talked about as much, so I'm going to give a bit of a rundown of two of the main complaints I see about the prequels as a whole:

One of the first things is people talk about the direction of the prequels. I never minded Lucas' directing, but when looking into the early stages after he wrote the story and script for Episode I, Lucas offered the duties to Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard, to name a few, to direct not just the first film but all of the prequels, but the directors he asked all thought the task would be very big and didn't want to do anything to hurt the Star Wars name. Spielberg talked Lucas into doing them himself, as he'd be the best person to direct them. I have to say that I love the prequels, not as much as the original trilogy, but the prequels are great. Yes they have flaws, but every movie has flaws, even if those flaws are small. No film is perfect. Star Wars fans think that Star Wars has to be perfect, or else it just sucks the big one.
The other thing is the screenplays themselves, particularly the dialogue. Lucas knows he's best at writing a story for a film and producing a film. Writing scripts with amazing dialogue, isn't necessarily Lucas' strength, he's admitted this. With that said, I do have to say, I read something long ago, can't remember where unfortunately, but it basically said that the dialogue with Anakin in the PT is good and they point to AOTC, because in TPM he's a kid and acts and sounds like one, but by Episode II, the dialogue that he gets crap for is with Anakin and the romantic scenes. It points out that Anakin can't express feelings of love or anything of the sort as it's against the Jedi way, and in this article it reminded us that Star Wars isn't just a sci-fi fantisy film, it's also a soap opera, hence it's called a Space Opera quite often, and as a result, Anakin has no clear way to express his love to Padme without sounding all creepy as hell when he finally does. The only love he ever experienced that was genuine was from his mom, and that's a different love he feels for Padme, and since the whole period he'd go through experiencing his feelings for anyone else in a loving manner that isn't like his mom, he missed out on and are now coming full force when he sees Padme, but that's just a little thing I've got to say about the dialogue in the Prequels. Not like it's going to change anyone's minds or anything. This isn't as long as I thought it would be, so that's good.
I think Lucas is a fine director, but the thing is he has a huge imagination that a lot of things are on screen that some find either distracting or unnecessary. I like films made by Lucas, but I can see where some aren't huge fans of them or don't like them as much as I do. Still would've been great if Disney used his ideas, as his stories are amazing and even the Lucas detractors/haters give Lucas credit for creating a great story in the prequels. They just might not like them at all or as much as others do. I personally feel that Lucas should be involved with Star Wars as a consultant at least.

Well, technically, Annie didn't build C-3PO, he just reassembled him from stolen scrap parts that were well over a hundred years old. C-3PO was actually built from new on the planet Affa by the Cybot Galactica droid building company in 112 BBY.

Just rewatched it for my theory ( and I found clues :p ) but this movie is good. I don't understand the complaining.

The kid is playing innocence which is the point of being the will of the Force, the story is deep to introduce a trilogy and the CGI are good enough to let you enjoy the journey.

Lucas isn't very gifted for comedy but it ain"t the point of this movie.

Of course, you can yourself why Padme has to wash R2, the hiding of the queen is poor and Maul lost with the high ground but who cares, this is a journey across the galaxy and it's a good one.

One could argue it IS the point of the movie since Jar Jar is a cannon ball tearing through the front lines of this movie and he is there solely for humor...
