Ok i want to nip some of these "Rey is overpowered" comments right now

Flying Skills: There is a very quick piece of dialogue when Rey and Finn escape the tie-fighters in which I think she said she had some kind of flight training. I think this is a reference to the "simulator" from the book MSW talks about.

Secondly - The falcon on Jakku is known to rey as junk ship owned by unkar. When she is on the falcon with Han, she actually knows about additional features added to the falcon, which IMO means she has at least walked through it and looked at things. Overall, to me this was like luke just hopping in the X-wing. They imply some flight training.

Rey Connection with the Force: Ok this one seriously pisses me off. So many people keep saying she is OP with the force. Kylo explains at star killer that when rey mind tricks a guard that her powers are only just coming into being and that she will gets progressively more "dangerous" if the ST don't find her. Throughout the whole Starkiller base capture section she is VERY new to it. Furthermore when she force grabs the sabre in the fight, she DOES NOT instantly fight like a pro jedi. In fact kylo has her continuously on the run. It is only when Kylo has the upper hand and then "the force" is mentioned, she is "triggered" and gives into the force and it guides her actions. In that moment she disables Kylo. IT's NOT HER OWN SKILL, it was the force working through her

About her flying "skills." People just need to watch her take off... Her flying looks more like a kid stealing a car and going for a joyride.

I agree about Rey having been through the Falcon before. I can imagine that Unkar may have got her to fix things.

I don't have any issue with her connection to the Force.
The only thing which bothers me is that she tries to use a Jedi mind trick without any indication that she would even know that's a thing.
I would have liked to have seen it more accidental, or at least established earlier in the film that she had done something similar and then have her try it again.

    Amen!

It was handled perfectly fine. There was a natural progression of discovery between Rey and the Force. As for the duel, let us not forget that Kylo was hindered by what was a relatively severe injury.

Re flying: yeah i agree, watching her take off is like a kid taking training wheels off a bike and then finally they stay upright after a few worries. She's definitely not some professional pilot like Poe Dameron.

The only thing i can think about the mind trick is that at some point when is was actually confirmed by han that "everything was real" that she had previously heard about jedi mind tricks (like watto in TPM), and considering she just sort of realised she has abilities, that she wanted to test them. I could be WAY off here. ;)

Even having been created exclusivly by the Force, Anakin wasn't overpowered as Rey was. Even being the very offspring from the dude that was created by the Force and tutored by a Jedi master, Luke was not super powerful as Rey was. Sorry if you don't want to hear this, but it's the truth. I'm not a Rey basher and I greatly like her character yet JJ went overboard with her blatant use of the Force. It's like I mentioned in another post, Luke was the direct ofspring of Vader, he was a great pilot with tremendous aim that could even hit Womp Rats from his Skyhopper, he was tutored by Ben Kenobi and the Force was so strong in him that Vader could even sence this being on one ship while Luke was in another and what did Luke do in the movie regarding the Force? He deflected three shots from a training probe and let the Force guide him to make a shot to the Death Star and this being with us knowing he had skills and with Ben guiding him from beyond. Rey on the other hand was completly ignorant of the Force to the point that she even thought it to be a myth, she had no mentor whatsoever, and yet Rey completly controled a Stormtrooper to the point of giving him three direct commands, she pulled thoughts out of a trained Jedi, touched an object and recieved visions from it as a Kiffar Jedi would do, she beat a trained Jedi in a Force pull battle and then was power boosted to a point of even beating said Jedi in lightsaber combat hitting her oponent multiple times while she herself was not touched even once. I don't know about you my friend, but if you don't see this as Rey being an overpowered character, then I don't know what your concept of overpowered might be.

She was definitely on the Falcon before. Not only did she know what features Unkar had added, she knew exactly where the turret was located. She directed Finn to it as soon as they boarded on Jakku.

And let's not forget that Kylo was an undisciplined poser who was seriously injured before that fight even started.

It's been a while since I've watched A New Hope, but isn't the extent of Obi Wan's training only telling Luke to "feel the force flow", "use your instincts" and that sort of stuff during one trip? Why is it such a stretch to believe Rey figured out these two basic principles that she has, maybe, heard from legends and that were later confirmed by Maz when she tells Rey about the force ("It flows through all the living things. Close your eyes, feel it, you know it's always been there").

Secondly, she feels the effect of the force on her when Kylo Ren attacks her two or three times. That probably helped her understand the nature of his powers and how he does what he does. But still, when she fights back his mind read, it doesn't seem to me like she was trying to get into his mind; instead she was just trying to resist him, she was acting on instinct.

Thirdly, the Jedi mind trick, she probably learned Jedis could do that from the legends she's heard as well, and what did she have to lose by trying? She was trapped and had no other alternative, might as well try that trick until it works or just accept she's gonna die lol. I can't remember if it was established that only advanced Jedis can do that. If so, then yeah, I'll concede she learned too fast.

The first thing you mentioned was not Rey's doing. It was said the force was calling to her, she didn't do anything here. When she got that lightsaber over Kylo, I took it as a continuation of what was said before, the lightsaber simply was calling to her, it didn't belong to Kylo. It was almost like an Excalibur moment, and it gives us a great dramatic moment. I think you are treating the force as something too "scientific" here: Kylo can control it more therefore it should always favor him. Meanwhile this movie tried to establish the force as something more mythical than that. The force is not a passive thing, and something in it has awaken.

Anyway, this is all just my interpretation. I have no problem believing and accepting what happened in this movie.

You have to take into consideration all the offscreen time that Luke had with Ben and the things they might have talked about. Luke had the whole trip to Mos Eisley to talk to Ben, he then saw Ben use the mind trick on the Stormtroopers and finally they travelled together and Ben gave Luke lessons. Even if the trip took a few hours it is still more time to explain that Luke should have outclassed Rey big time. Regarding your Force calling and Excalibur comments I have to say that this just isn't how we have seen the Force work in the movies at all. Anakin's lightsaber is just a plain lightsaber without mystic properties like the Exaclibur and JJ just did what he wanted regarding the Force. I am perfectly aware that this is now Disney who is running the show and I'm aware that they are going to keep making changes to lots of the things that Lucas did yet they seem to forget that they are doing a sequel and not just a reboot. Had TFA been indeed a reboot, I could have cared less for Rey's abilities, lack of training and overall use of the Force and I would have greatly enjoyed it without complain. We would all understand that this was a new version of SW and things were going to run differently than what we had seen before. I can cope with that just fine yet they decided to continue something that already had an established way of working and they just trampled all over it for the sake off fan service and creating a new generation of fans. That's like taking Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and saying you are going to make a new trilogy that goes 30 years after LOTR yet when you do make the very first movie, you have a new bad guy who comes out of nowhere resurrect Azog and give him lightning shooting powers and eye beams, you have the Hobbits all wearing copies of Saurons rings and you have Legolas using mystic swords that summon dragons. Sure, alot of the new generation are going to dig it and maybe a few old generation fans might too, but alot of the hardcore LOTR and Hobbit fans are going to feel insulted by the overpowering characters who defy all that was established in the past 6 movies. This is not a reboot my friend, this is the continuation of the Skywalker saga that many of us have been following ever since we were children. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

    Someone put it pretty good

"People over exaggerate the Rey vs Kylo thing so much. There's enough evidence to support it. One we know Rey is a badass with melee weapons (her staff which she likely grew up with and protected herself with) she's also probably Luke's kid (hence heavy force sensitivity)
Then Kylo who we know from Snoke's line is not finished training, he was shot by Chewie and nicked by Finn, just killed his dad and possibly a bit winded from his aggressive attacks on Finn. Plus when was the last time he probably actually fought someone in a lightsaber battle?
Do we also forget that 10 year old anakin built a droid and was heavy in mechanics, won in one of the most dangerous sports ever then flew into battle and blew up a droid ship. Or how Luke (while he was a pilot beforehand, never flew out of atmosphere and probably never had a ship battle) then he blew up the Death Star..??
    So put like this. TL;DR
A 10 year old blows up a droid base, without a struggle.
A good 19 year old pilot destroys the greatest weapon in the galaxy.
A 19 year old defeats an untrained lightsaber wielder. All stretching scenarios.."

I think that Rey is something new entirely.

Anakin when he was young even as a child had an uncanny ability to understand machines (as if they actually talked to them) also he was an instinctive pilot able to fly at speeds that normal humans would have been killed. If he was never found by a Jedi, it can be assumed that he would have become better and better at these things as he aged.

Luke's force abilities seemed more emotional, instinctively able to know when something was wrong, and able to have splinter visions of future events (and even possible alternative futures). He was also able to connect with people over long distances with no direct training in this ability by a Jedi master.

We also know that although there were common abilities and training shared among all Jedi (and Sith) other Jedi's had unique abilities that were not a universal abilities even for other Jedi masters. The force worked in them in unique ways beyond training.

My theories for Rey is two things...

    1) I think that her unique force ability is being able to hear the force speaking to her and whispering secrets directly to her mind.
What I mean is that I think she might be the first force user that the force can directly communicate with, even if it is only on a subconscious level. Like she is a direct conduit of the force to communicate through.

This would explain how she "knew" that she could mind trick the stormtrooper into letting her go (despite never knowing that was even an ability of the Jedi) and how when she closed her eyes and listened she suddenly gained skill and technique in lightsaber use.

I think the knowledge was given to her through the force when she quietened her mind.
This could be dead Jedi taking advantage of this ability in her even though she has not been trained to see or hear them consciously
or it could be knowledge coming from the force itself (which would be a powerful ability to have because eventually over time you would learn things that no Jedi has ever known)

My other possible theory is that she has actually had force training in her youth, but her mind has been deliberately wiped of all knowledge of it and false memories implanted (possibly via technology, but more likely by a powerful force user with their own unique force ability). This would explain why so little of her past has been mentioned at all.

If this was done, it would be to hide her from someone who would be able to sense her or to prevent her from doing something extremely foolish that she planned to do.

And if this is the case, then she is not spontaneously "learning" new abilities but actually REMEMBERING her force and lightsaber training. Which would explain why she is increasing in skill with both force use and lightsaber training so rapidly. This is possible as Jedi were taught from an extremely young age and she could have been a very powerful force user and lightsaber wielder even at that age.... and now it is finally starting to come back to her as she taps into the force and breaks away the mind blocks.

    Those are my theories anyway.

    On a different note...
What I would really love to happen is if Rey is not actually related to the Skywalker bloodline at all, but is actually the decendant of a powerful Sith Lord instead. That would mean that the Skywalker line would be the new threat to the universe but a Sith decendant would end up being its saviour. Yet another attempt by the force to find "balance".
I would do this for sure if I was involved, but I doubt anyone at Disney would have the balls to do something like this unfortunately (sigh).

I'm sure they have made her somehow related to the Skywalker bloodline already.

I still will like the character anyway.

And yet you are failing to see the real picture by quoting huge events. Anakin had competed many times before the Boonta Eve and he said so himself that he had already gone against Sebulba. What did Anakin use the Force to do? Simple reflexes. Luke already had the skill to shoot a womp rat from a flying ship so what was the only thing the Force (guided by Ben no less) do for Luke? Simple impulse on when to make the shot yet here we have a girl rip thoughts out of a trained Force users mind, use mind control to give three diferent commands, use telekinesis to beat a trained Force user at his own game and get a boost in her combat abilities. If Rey was such a badass with melee weapons as you said, why did Kylo (being wounded no less) totally own her? Reys inate skills were nothing against a wounded Kylo Ren and it wasn't until her misterious Force power boost that she could finally beat him. I know many people loved TFA and that is totally fine but it's kind of funny to see the huge amount of denial regarding something that was so incredibly obvious. As I said before, I really like Rey and I'd love to see what kind of a Jedi she turns out to be yet I don't let me liking her get in the way of seeing that JJ took alot of liberties reguarding her Force use.

Wasn't that Unkar holding child Rey's hand in the flashback? Rather then just walk through the Falcon she might of worked on it a lot as a child or watched Unkar or his thugs working on it. I assume the Unkar/Rey relationship was a lot like the Watto/Anakin one. That's the best I can think of to explain how she knows all the stuff she did living on a mostly deserted backwater world. Even Han couldn't understand his own ships computer- maybe that's how she learned the machine binary language?

Yeah. You know typing that out, unless its expressly defined elsewhere- that's what i'm going with in my own mind as I rewatch the movie- She worked on the Falcon as a kid.. even if she was just the Gopher. (Go-for? Go for this? Go for that? Its the pet name they give the kids that help workmen on projects :))
