I'm sure we've heard all the rumours, listened to the views of people (such a Breznican of EW) who are close to the production and have suggested a relation and of course have seen the visual and story parallels between the characters.

I'm just curious to how people think this would be the case and if there is anything within TFA so far that appears to be strong evidence for it? What's more, what have the cast said? I believe Rey has spoken numerous times about her parentage and has indicated that it is in some ways "revealed" or quite clear in TFA? Would it be so obvious if she were a Kenobi?

But the main questions I have is how could Kenobi have had a family and we not know about it? Where were they when he went off with Luke in ANH? At what point would he have broken the Jedi code? And if he did father children then would this diminish the Kenobi of the OT who seemingly lived a life as a hermit in order to keep Luke safe and "wait until the time was right" to reveal himself?

yes, when you do at the same time Luke Skywalker who was never a sexless monk in the OT now such a PT Jedi and the PT Jedi role model Kenobi as the one who forgot all the rules out of a sudden. Only Luke is not allowed to have a kid in this trilogy, so that the Skywalker name dies out.

It would also mean that whilst the OT happened there was another full age Kenobi running around who was given no screen time. Which is suppose is plausable Obi Wan could have had a relationship with someone out in the clone wars, then returned to guard Luke. Y'know it could easily have happened. But Rey would need to be Obi Wan's grandchild no matter how you swing it. Becasue he was dead before Rey was even born.

So it brings up more questions than answers.

Luke Skywalker is the simplest answer to the Rey-Parents question. but I don't like it as a solution, its un-inspired.

I'm not at all sure about this Kenobi relative idea being feasible and was surprised to hear Breznican make a statement that could point that way... although I admit I do really like the poetic justice of a Kenobi coming full circle to help save the galaxy in another sort of redemption.

Anyway, there is that period of time (a year, I think?) referenced in TCW, in which Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon guarded young Satine (eventually the ruler of Mandalore) from her enemies. Later Obi-Wan admits he would have left the Jedi order for her if she had said the word, so clearly there was attachment there on his part when he was young--which would have been reasonable timing, in terms of age, for a parent of Rey to be born. Of course, that supposes that Satine hid this theoretical child's existence from pretty much everyone, including Obi-Wan.

Is Kenobi heritage clear in TFA? I don't think so, but on the other hand, there are things in it that could be considered clues--just for example, Obi-Wan's two clear lines in Rey's vision or her accent, maybe--if you're looking for them. Like pretty much every other theory of Rey's parentage. ;) But I'm sure others have many more parallels and reasons for Rey Kenobi that I can come up with. I'm sort of done worrying about Rey's origins myself and am content to just let her do her hero thing.

The problem is that Rey is written in the TFA to practically have links to (echoes of) all major players within the OT.

She mirror's luke's journey, as does her outfit and the xwing toy and helmet alludes to him, and the lightsaber calls to her.

She mirror's Han as she is good with ships and works as his understudy. She also comes to possess the falcon. and they clearly have some kind of father/daghter dynamic going by the end of the film. Kylo Ren even say's as much to her.

Her accent, clothing, dream and story arc all mirror Kenobi's life also. and the scene inside star killer base with her sneaking around are so much like Alec Guinness on the star destroyer its impossible to ignore.

And she paralells anakin, possibly more than anyone else. The outfit, the piloting skills, the desert origins, the lightsaber, her ability with the force, she mirrors him in many ways, which is great because so does Kylo Ren, but he represents all the dark, un-likeable aspects of Anakin Skywalker and Rey seems to be the light. (rey of light pun goes here).

And she even looks quite a bit like both Amidala and Leia (who she obviously has some connection to)
    _____

I think Rey was purposely written so we could read into all of these bits and not tell what was going on. which is completely different from the OT where the writing rarely tried to purposuly mis-lead us about Lukes origins. we we're given a plausible story for his origin which made the twist a 'twist'.
Rey's parentage is so shrouded in mis-information that no 'twist' will actually be a twist at all. it will just be a reveal as we are being lead to expect a reveal.

Yeah, I was reading about that stuff with Satine. I guess that is plausible but is is easily explainable on screen? Does it have to be?

I don't know...to me, the problem of Rey being left as little more than a slave to starve on Jakku if she comes from a beloved legacy character is hard to get around, period. I like to think that a good filmmaker with a good story can get around pretty much anything though. Who knows?

Yes, her title was Duchess. (I assume that's "royalty," as she was the ruler, and not just a title of nobility.)

This theory would require so much explanation and exposition I kind of hope it is not true. Even though the visual parallels would be awesome. [IMG]

    Outside the box....

We know that the idea of "force ghosts" is going to be problematic going forward. What if the story group decides to do more with "if you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." To be fair that guy who sometimes talks to Luke isn't really "more powerful than you can imagine."

What if becoming a force ghost means you can be reborn? Now, I don't think they'll do this idea, but in this case Obi-Wan has been reborn as Rey and he's been reborn far more powerful than he was when he was Obi-Wan. This would also raise the question if Anakin could be reborn as well.

@master_shaitan, it seems these days we are on the same wavelengths. Last night I made a new thread connected with Obi-Wan and I see that this morning you have started a new one as well.

OBI-WAN KENOBI'S LEGACY IN THE SEQUEL TRILOGY
    https://thecantina.starwarsnewsnet....n-kenobis-legacy-in-the-sequel-trilogy.10859/

Rey's grandfather or not (I think he is), I can't imagine that such a pivotal character who had such important interactions and played such an important role in the Skywalkers saga will be missing from the Sequel Trilogy. I'm sure that he will play some major role and I think that if Rey was his granddaughter that will be dramatic and emotional and actually very profoundly satisfying.

To me there are many things that point that Rey may be a Kenobi, but also if we look at the trilogies as a whole, it is difficult to imagine that Obi-Wan will be left out. He is also the most natural candidate for a spin off and I think that Breznican is correct to suspect that Lucasfilm may be holding off on that becuase Obi-Wan will yet have an important part in the main saga. From a marketing perspective I imagine they are counting on how much more the hype will be when Rey is revealed as a Kenobi. A spinoff that follows the sequel trilogy will be extremely popular.

But for me, it just makes sense for the saga story that Obi-Wan is involved.

My money is on his relationship with Duchess Satine (yep definitely high royalty!) while he was a padawan and that she hid the existence of a child from him (and that child in turn became one of Rey's parents). Satine and Obi-Wan admit their love in TCW and a romantic connection is already canonically established between them. We have the canonical set up for the probability that something more than just silent mutual feelings might have passed between them. As @Choose Light points out above, Obi-Wan shares with Anakin that if Satine had asked him he would have left the jedi order for her. It makes sense that she knows that and hid the existence of a child in order for him not to leave the order.

I do not believe in the necessity of long detailed explanations. They are simply not necessary to the story at hand. In the same way Obi-Wan dropped things like "I was a jedi and I had a pupil who became Vader and betrayed and murdered your father who was also a jedi and we fought together in the clone wars" and gave no other details about how that happened, what is "Clone wars" etc. we are given enough background that doesn't need elaboration on. It is very strange to me that people expect minute explanations about everything. In the OT nothing is explained about how Anakin became Vader and nothing is explained about how Luke and Leia ended up separated. It isn't explained how Anakin met Padme (even the name Padme was not mentioned), etc. These are all details that are not crucial to the story we saw. So these expectations about minute detailed parentage explanations are bizarre to me. It is enough if we are told in the movie that rey is the granddaughter of Obi-Wan. We don't need to know how her parents met or even who they are unless it is crucial to the story at hand.

I blame this intensive demand to show and tell what exactly happened with the way the PT was set up showing us every single meeting between all the characters and terrible dialogue such as "Are you an angel"...

I like this clip very much as it shows how Obi-Wan is strong and is able to not give in to hate and anger even at this painful moment. What a great jedi!

Indeed, great minds or fools seldom differ? :p

Interesting post and I agree that it is a strong connection and possibility. A Kenobi spin-off seems likely and this would add much need depth to such a story. In regard to having to explain the detail, I think this is different to situation with the OT because now we have many films and TV series' that take place during the timeframe that all this occurs (mostly). That's why Snoke being a new character that has always been around is difficult for some people (me included) to just accept. However, there does seems to be a window of opportunity for Kenobi both pre-TPM (when he would've been a padawan) and during his hermit years. In regard to the latter however, I would find it diminishing of his character somewhat to discover that he'd been off off having a family etc during this time. I thought it was such an amazing thing to go into exile and devote his time to watch over Luke and ensure that the light side had a fighting chance against the dark in the years to come.

I could however envisage Kenobi discovering that he had fathered a child in his Padawan days and that the child had been hidden away because Satine was too young/had a duty to her people/didn't want Kenobi to stop being a Jedi.

She's only connected to Obi Wan by the force. Though it's possible she could be related, but doubtful.

If you thinknabout it every single contact with Rey was connected to Luke.

BB-8 who had a piece of a map to Luke.
    The MF
    Chewie
Running into Han who shared his belief of the force, Jedi's, the dark side and knowing Luke
    Maz
    The light saber
The force back heavily connected Luke with everything and everyone.
    Yoda's voice
    Palpatine's voice
    Obi Wan's voice
She runs away and gets take by Ben Luke's nephew
She escapes, watches Han die, defeats Ben and meets Luke who she thought was a myth.

Her connection is more about The Force than who her parents are, but I have a feeling one of them a noble force user, or connection to the Skywalker's in some way.

Rey doesn't have to be Obi-Wan's granddaughter to be a Kenobi. Perhaps she's his grandniece. Perhaps he had a sibling.

To my mind, this is the point that gives the most credence to the basis of a Rey Kenobi theory. We actually have a pre-established canon fact that Obi-Wan had an attachment in his young days, leaving the door open for a child of his to be born. Yet we get to have our cake and eat it too--Obi-Wan nevertheless keeps his commitment to the Jedi ways going forward. When Satine does not give the word that she wants him to leave the Jedi (she is even more idealistic than he is), he does not pursue her but turns back to the order and, as far as we know for sure, follows it faithfully for the rest of his days.

One of my absolute favorite Obi-Wan moments! (And what a perfect foil for Anakin!)

So, this is something that I keep circling back to, and is a bit of a stretch, in more ways than one.. but here goes nothin:

I saw TFA on opening day, after the 6 movie marathon in theaters. In between trilogies, the theater staff would ask trivia and give away prizes (to keep us from going stir crazy, more than anything I think) and there were some really cool giveaways... TFA t shirts, TFA books, TFA official movie posters, etc. And the Grand Prize? A Rebels "Sabine Wren - Pop! Vinyl figure" .... seems a bit out of place, eh? I was near the front, and the theater attendant mentioned a couple times that Lucasfilm was adamant that this be the last prize given away...

Is it possible that Sabine is Satine's daughter? (I haven't seen TCW or Rebels --I know, I'm terrible-- , so I really don't know... but from what I do know I would say the possibility exists.)
    My theory would be:
    Obi-Wan Kenobi + Satine = Sabine (Kenobi)
    Sabine + ?? = Rey (Kenobi)

What I'm getting at, is that with that stupid little prize right before the premiere of TFA, knowing that Rey's parentage would be a huge question, Lucasfilm may have been trolling us with the answer from the very beginning.

Am I crazy? Probably. But it's fun to conspire :D

That was pretty much all I had to make the connection, but yes... not to mention the almost identical names. Could be a red herring, or it just could be blatantly obvious....
