It has occurred to me that if Rey is to be trained, at some point she'll lose a limb. What are your thoughts?

I said none... purely because I feel we've got to have one hero make it through undamaged at some point.

    ...

    ...undamaged physically, I mean.

If she's a Skywalker, she's got to lose something.

    Why not leg?

I’m not 100% sure I agree with this. Yoda, Obiwan, Qui-Gon, and any number of other Jedi we've seen in the saga have been trained, all without a loss of limb.

I'm also not 100% sure Rey must lose a limb in order to be a Skywalker.

In Anakin’s case, his first loss (right forearm/hand) was a result of his hubris: he thought he could take down a Sith Lord by himself. His additional physical losses (leaving him a stumpy mess) were due to his hubris in thinking he could take down his own master, Obiwan.

As for Luke, I think the reason Lucas had Luke lose his right hand in ESB was because it served as a visual key in RotJ to remind Luke, “Hey, if you follow down the path of the dark side, you’re going to wind up just like your mechanical father.” There’s actually a moment in RotJ when Luke bests Vader, severs his hand (exposing wiring), and Luke looks down at his own gloved hand and then has an “Oh crap” moment.

If Rey were to lose a limb, I think there would have to be an important reason and one that would move the story along, and right now, I’m not sure I can cook one up.

To me severed limbs have another purpose apart from symbolism. It is one of the few ways you can have someone struck down in battle with killing them.

I voted "none" just because it would be too much of a rehash of the old stuff. I remember being slightly bored already when viewing AotC and witnessing Anakin to lose his arm, thinking that Lucas had lost all his originality.

Also, Rey didn't cut any of Kylo Ren's limbs in their fight. You can disarm your opponent other ways too.

I just don't see why Rey should get a pass from serious lightsaber injury. Even Finn got cut down with one.

I'd be fine with it happening. I'd also be fine with it not happening. However, one thing that I absolutely DO NOT want to happen is for Disney to say to themselves "we cannot have her get maimed, because she's a woman and people might complain." If it can happen to Luke, and Anakin, and Vader, and Dooku, and Mace Windu, etc, then she shouldn't be off-limits either.

Finn didn't lose an arm or leg. Kylo slashed him in the spine and put him into coma. Finn will most likely survive and have all his members intact with the expectation of having a scar in his back (that we will not see, unless there is a scene with Finn taking off his clothes). By all mean, I'm ok for Rey to get battle scars. But for her to lose an arm/hand, just because Anakin and Luke did (true: You can always argue that she is her own self, and Luke/Anakin have nothing to do with dismembering, but at least to me it would feel too much like an allusion to Skywalker heritage), is something that I would find as a cheap trick.

I can be wrong, but I hope that Johnson has some originality and that he will steer away from that kind of copy-pasting.

Right, she doesn't have to lose a limb, but I don't want her to go without getting hurt because she's a pretty woman.
One of my issues with Rey is that it already seems people are too precious with her, where her counterparts were put through hell, Finn included.
But to me limb loss isn't just some trope, it's a consequence of playing with hot laser swords. Finn was incredibly lucky that he didn't get split in twain. They can't keep having deep body injuries without characters dying or permanent paralysis. It makes no sense.

She should lose an eye and wear a badass GFFA eye-patch just to change it up a bit.

Do Skywalkers have to lose a limb all the time? Is that part of the poetry rhyming thing?

I agree! She should have a gnarly scar or something like that. I think the whole severed limb thing is something that is too original. They should try something different if Rey is going to be injured.

To let Rey loose a limb would be a really bad idea. We just got a soft reboot of ANH, if we get one of TESB I'm officially done with the new trilogy. There are new characters now and the old ones with new roles and motivations: do something with it instead of just copying 1:1 from the old movies. It is important to get the language from the old movies right (which TFA didn't get right) and overall tone but not the actual scenes, that would just be a sign of horrible writing and also dilutes the meaning of the scenes in the original trilogy.

Why should Rey loose a limb? Rey is overly powerful and basically is sort of a danger probably not only to Kylo Ren and co. but also to herself and maybe the lightside, they have plenty of chances to execute her struggles in the movies without having her loose a limb.

I would rather transfer the part of body transformation we know from the SW movies on Finn. He basically got his back sliced open with a lightsaber. You could have him be a paralyzed character in a wheelchair (but please no space wheelchair with a jetpack attached that will float around with the force used by character "Insert here" while he shoots Stormtroopers). That would truly meet ends with the concept of having the middle act being the darkest one in trilogies where you have the characters struggle and giving them a reason to.

Yes, they do. It's absolute and no way around it. It HAS to happen!

(Just in case it didn't come through, I'll go ahead and say the above is COMPLETE sarcasm. I have no idea if they do or don't or poetry or whatever...but I do happen to think she should. Just my opinion.)

I know it’s a pattern in the second movie for the Skywalker to lose a hand but it would be kind of repetitive and blatantly copied from ESB and AOTC. Also they had a very good opportunity to have Kylo or Finn lose a limb in the end fight of TFA and they decided against it. They did give Finn and Kylo some gnarly scars though so maybe Rey gets a cool scar too.
