So, I've heard the theory of Luke actually getting his force powers drained by Snoke and that's why he's had to flee to the first Jedi Temple. This makes a ton of sense and am suspecting that this is the case.

Could this also be a good reason why it was probably Luke that left Rey on Jakku with Lor San Tekka and part of the map to hide her while he was defenseless?

This could be quite a character arc and test for Rey as to her confusion and anger with Luke for doing this and must come to terms with her being abandoned. After all, Luke learned from Kenobi and Yoda that concealing a truth to the right moment was not necessarily the right thing to do, but indeed necessary non the less. :)

Rey was abandoned long before Luke fled so that doesn't work. ;)

Hmmm. I have my time line mixed up then because I thought she had been dumped off around the same time all the ish went down with his academy and Leia's final contact with him.

Jedi destroyed 6 years before TFA. Rey was dumped 14 years before TFA.

Well, I guess I'm not too disappointed because I don't want to know everything about the film before seeing it :)

Rey wasn't left with Lor San Tekka but with Unkar Plutt. I'm pretty sure she would have had a better life if she had been left with Lor instead of that stinking blobfish Plutt. Rey never showed confusion or anger towards Luke either.

So Snoke destroyed Luke's Midi-chlorians? Can someone live through that?

Just curious how would Snoke go about "stealing" Luke's force powers?
"The force is what gives a jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together." I don't think the force would LET itself be stolen from LUKE SKYWALKER if it's even possible to be stolen at all.

Another problem with this is that Snoke seems to be if not afraid, then extremely wary of Luke.

If Luke had no force abilities, I'm not sure Snoke would see him as a threat.

It's not Luke's power he was worried about. It was his knowledge:

    "The new Jedi will rise".

How would he drain his power? I haven't the foggiest. But it is canonised in Aftermath. My guess is they so t go down the midichlorian path so I imagine that it will be something to do with damaging someone's will. Mentally damaging them with the dark side. Or perhaps they made Luke sick in some way that drains his power - a kind of space cancer kind of thing.

Luke then not being strong with the force anymore would then explain why the force needed to be awakened (suggesting that Luke hasn't been using the force) and also why Luke didn't return to help his friends and family. He had to exile himself to keep his knowledge safe. And it's also why Ren is desperate to find Luke - to destroy the Jedi knowledge forever and be confident in defeating Luke because he isn't powerful anymore.

From a story telling perspective it will also provide a way for Rey to walk the hero journey alone without having to kill off Luke.

My guess is that all this will be connected to the Force trees that Luke sought after RotJ and possible located on Ahch-To.

When Tashu (I think that's his name) is talking to wedge. He says about Sith Lords if the past draining the force from their captives.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 18, 2017, Original Post Date: Jan 18, 2017 ---
In Chapter Eighteen, a mysterious, evil character named Tashu says this to his hostage, Wedge Antilles: ‘Did you know that Sith Lordscould sometimes drain the Force energy from their captives? Siphoning life from them and using it to strengthen their connection to the dark side? Extending their own lives, as well, so that they could live for centuries beyond their intended expiration?'

While it's been mentioned in canon (force draining), it seems to me that Snoke would have to have had some kind of contact with Luke in order to make that happen, and perhaps it's only a feeling, but I'm not convinced that the two have ever met.

In addition, if Snoke HAD stolen Luke's ability, why would he be so bent on finding and potentially destroying Luke if Luke has no powers?? It appears to me that Snoke is afraid of Luke because of the powers that he HAS, and Snoke wants him gone.

Where was Luke whilst his temple/students were being destroyed? My guess is he is lured away and then drained by Snoke.

As I say in the OP, Snoke isn't afraid of Luke's power but his knowledge:

"If Skywalker returns, the new Jedi will rise...".

And if Snoke knows that Luke is off finding out about his (Snoke's) past then he will certainly fear whatever knowledge he has - knowledge perhaps on how to defeat him?

Don't flame me here, but please follow me.
I don't read Star Wars books (I read a lot, but not Star Wars).

I am always stunned when people block speculation from people that only watch the movies with facts from the numerous novels floating around.
And believe me, I am not saying that on a negative note.
Rey being abandoned 14 years ago: Book fact
Jedi being destroyed 6 years before TFA: Book fact

Now back to Episode 8: Do you think Rian Johnson based his story on every novel written lately or just by reading TFA's treatment.

We know that Episode 8 was written while TFA was not yet in cinemas.

    OR OR....

Do you think Novel writers have access to scoops from Episode 8 & 9 while writing their novels?
