there's nothing unfeminine about Rey. if you're looking for "girlyness", she has natural compassion for a lonely droid, she plays with dolls, she perfectly well understands and rebukes Finn's prying into her personal affairs (about a boyfriend), and whether people like it or not, she's keenly aware of Kylo Ren's maleness (in whatever context you want to frame that).

but maybe you could explain what you mean by "feminine" (and how Ripley and Connor represent femininity to you), @Boss Vos.

"Girlyness" is the wrong word, but sure, by all means. I didn't see her play with any dolls in TFA, and to be fair guys play with dolls too (they're just marketed as action figures instead). When it comes to the droid scene, first of all reacting to a crime is not specific to any gender. Additionally, it's not like she was thrilled to have BB-8 tag along, she was actually quite reluctant. Besides, showing interest in mechanical stuff (droids in this example) rather than faces is a classic male trait than can be traced to infants. She might be aware of Kylo Ren's devilishly good looks but that's totally up to the viewer's own imagination.

As for Ripley and Connor in Alien and Terminator, it's just the way they act and react to stuff happening, showing off a more vulnerable personality. I feel this is more natural because this is how women around me react when something scary happens, for example.
In Aliens in particular, I like how Ripley is the one who cares the most about the little girl they find.

Although I must say that the way Rey says "None of your business, that's why" to Finn is quite feminine. A guy wouldn't answer like that, although to be fair I don't think a girl would ask a guy if they have a girlfriend in such a sloppy way.

why would Rey, who has lived on Jakku and had to fend for herself for so long readily show any vulnerability to danger? that'd be a liability.
and yet she shows her vulnerability to Maz, and later she hugs Finn with relief and gratitude. not that vulnerability is a specifically "feminine" trait. : o p
anyway, she's perfectly feminine to me ~ and you yourself said her reaction to Finn is "quite" feminine. so i don't even see the problem, i guess.

by the way, the doll is in the AT-AT, where she also keeps flowers (which would not be considered particularly masculine, i'm guessing).

i guess i'm just not sure what you think she's missing.

Rey isn't exactly in a position to explore her "femininity" is she? Especially in the way you seem to view it (not that it's wrong).

She's been abandoned in a terrifying wasteland with nothing more than her two little hands to serve her. And yet, she "pretties" up her AT-AT home with an old flower and odds and ends, which I'm sure is a rather feminine trait.

Sigh. First of all, this isn't IRL, this is Star Wars, droids are basically pet substitutes. Secondly, she's force sensitive and might have an affinity for droids. Thirdly, she did what she could to survive. Her interest in mechanical stuff has risen out of her need to survive.

She's so absolutely vulnerable. Her whole plotline was that she wanted to go back to Jakku is hopes that SOMEONE would come back. She doesn't put on a brave face and trudge forward. She's vulnerable and desires a home and her family beyond everything.
When Finn comes to save her, she's so overwhelmed she hugs him.

She's not coded feminine in an obvious way because she's the hero, not a love interest, not a mother, not anything that would allude to her being a girl. She's just Rey of Jakku, who happens to be female.

FN-3263827: Vulnerability to danger is just one form of vulnerability, but sure. I think LilyInTheSkywalker put it quite well, with the abandonment issues being some sort of vulnerability. I'd say it's more of a sign of hope, but each to their own.

I saw the doll, but she wasn't exactly playing with it. Not that it matters, like I told you before it's a common toy... Also the flowers is a stretch, I mean who wouldn't want a plant or a flower in the middle of a desert.

But she is someone's daughter, and that is enough to allude to her being a girl. (Unless she turns out to be a clone or something).

Anyway, I don't really care. Rey being feminine or not doesn't affect the overall story. I was just trying to give an example as to why some people like the OP doesn't find her character very interesting.

I really like Rey as I think she is likeable and the Mary Sue tag is a bit overrated. People forget she was easily captured by Kylo Ren so she wasn’t invulnerable in TFA.

I think TLJ will explain a lot of things about her past and her ability to use the force in TFA and I think many fans will re-evaluate their Mary Sue opinion.

Hard to say at this point really, she's neither amazing nor annoying, she just ... is.
And to be fair, I'd say it's the case with all characters besides Kylo ren (who showed conflict).
Rian Johnson said everyone in this movie is going to face a tough challenge or something along those lines, which is a good thing so we'll see.

So basically, from a character dev. standpoint I find her very basic, but she makes a good main character and I'm optimistic regarding what she'll/could become

Rey Solowalker! is amazing. Propelled to my number 2 all time favourite SW character, second only to Luke Skywalker.

Erm rey being a girl or unfeminine has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on my not finding her character interesting. Don't jump to conclusions please.

My opinion on Rey is a mixed one. For starters, Daisy Ridley did an excellent job acting wise. While some of her direction was garbage(thanks, JJ), the emotion was there and she is really good at emoting. I daresay; she is better than Mark Hamill was during ANH. Seriously, I like that movie, but Hamill's lines can at times come off as whiny. And really, ESB and ROTJ made him a lot stronger.

As a character, in the context of the movie, I just found her a bit bland and incomplete. She to me makes friends with Han and Chewie way too quickly and her experience with reparing and flying the Falcon is horribly explained. Seriously, did Kasdan and Ardnt every thought of Show don't tell. I mean, heck; the best scene in TFA involved her and just going about her daily life. Why couldn't we have seen the flight simulator or heck, her tinkering with droids. Also, her motivation for staying on Jakku. Why? Why would she stay?

Why wouldn't she go with Han? And I am not saying she has to go. Just give us a reason. Heck, ANH, which TFA homages(for better or worse), was smart in having us get to really know Luke with those scenes with Ben and Han on the Falcon. So why not have some of those moments? And no, Takodana isn't enough. Though, the book does a better job, namely because we are in Rey's POV.

Her Force powers to me are also mixed. Her flying the Falcon I found was uncalled for. Poe, had he joined them group, would have been better. And her resisting Kylo Ren and shooting targets. But really, her using mind trick was BS. I'm sorry; that directly contradicts what was established by the OT. And her besting Kylo Ren was dumb.

I get she was injured, but really I cannot take Kylo seriously(much as I prefer him) as an antagonist going forward. Unless, TLJ does something with it beyond just Kylo wanting revenge, like Rey becoming arrogant/ overconfident. So this begs the question: do I dislike Rey? No, actually. While I found her movie portrayal bad, the novel of TFA, as well as, Forces of Destiny, actually paint her as a much better character. When outside JJ's awful direction, she actually comes off more charming in my view and more believable.

And heck, TLJ's latest trailer, just judging from the dialogue; I do believe I will find her a lot more fleshed out. So really, as of now I see Rey like Anakin in the strictest sense where I find the aulixiary material outside the films makes her better. But in the movie; I just find her bland. With any semblance of me liking the character coming from the acting of Ridley.

The reason she wants to go back to Jakku is in hopes her parents come back.

wow, alright. i saw you commenting the same things on the official ep viii rey thread, and i'm not sure why this demands a whole new thread, but okay. i'm gonna say again what i said there.

i adore rey. i immediately went out and bought her funko after i saw the movie. i thought she was the best character we'd seen in the series in a long time, and i really can't understand tall the hate (although i do honestly think SOME people are overly critical of her because she's a woman and apparently star wars is being ruined by sjw's and somehow she's evidence of that... which is a whole different [dumb, stupid, naive, ignorant, idiotic, synonyms] conversation).

i thought rey struggling in TFA was pretty apparent. like, i know there weren't many tangible, physical obstacles for her, but her emotional struggle throughout the film were established early on, especially while she was on jakku, remarkably with no dialogue. she's lonely and refuses her call to adventure from maz, unlike luke who jumps at the chance to become a jedi knight once he has no more ties to tattooine. it took rey the whole movie to go through that.

i think that's pretty genius, but idk, a ton of comment sections on the internet seem to disagree. she's driven by her need to belong and to be loved. she's looking for someone to show her her place in all this. it's so fundamental to what makes us the way we are, which is why i think so many people resonate with her.

as for her being good with tech / ships / fighting, that's because she's lived on jakku her whole life and had to learn to survive by herself out there. it'd be weird if she DIDN'T know how to do that. and she says she's a pilot (which at face value, is all we knew about luke, too, and he blew up the death star).

point is, i think people are emotional about it because a ton of people relate to rey and the criticism feels a little too abrasive for a story about space wizards and aliens.

This pretty much sums up my opinion, though far more eloquently than what I have written I might add. I don't however have the knowledge from the auxiliary materials that you and others have so I can't comment on that. Good post

Indeed, but my issue is that the movie really doesn't explain why. We are given a time line of events of when Rey was left on Jakku, as a child, and clearly has been there for a while. So that begs the question: if it has been say ten years and her folks haven't shown up, then what guarantees that they will show up? Heck, she'd be better off going with Han to locate them.

You could argue that Rey has abandonment issues/ is afraid. But in my view, the movie really made that not very clear. And shortchanged her character via the mystery box of the Forceback. Perhaps, if the movie had established some genuine dialogue between her, Finn and Han and we got to know her more. Like perhaps, she has abandonment issues and perhaps her parents promised her they'd be back; I could believe her.

But as it stands, she was a major victim of coincidence, a lot more than Luke was. So yeah, I do not buy her character arc. If anything, it is like a sliver. At least, Daisy Ridley is a good actor. And really, TLJ seems to be doing something with her. As for what, I'm not certain. But truthfully, I hope it is something cool.

Because, as it stands, Kylo Ren in the context of the movie, is the only new character I thought was decently fleshed out.
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 30, 2017, Original Post Date: Oct 30, 2017 ---
I agree that she isn't a Mary Sue. But I do agree with Landis on what makes a good character, fighting through adversity. Rey to me is one note because aside from some really paper thin motivations, she is a super victim of coincidence. Seriously, Luke had this issue, but at the very least he was a weakling. I am fine with Rey being competent, but I argue that the plot doesn't help her.

For example, her force powers. I am fine with her piloting the falcon, resisting Kylo. But her using mind trick was BS. Not only does it not make sense in the movie, but it is a cheap cop out. But not to sound moronic and give some constructive criticism, here's what I would have done for her during that moment. Have her use a lock pick. She is a scavenger after all and I can believe her, out of any character, to have one. Heck, if the movie really wants to go one step beyond, have the audience see that pick being used early in Maz's castle. Or heck: that beautiful visual montage. Same when it came to piloting. We get one measly line about her using a flight simulator when talking with Finn. Show don't tell. Again, the montage or some line of dialogue that is extrapolated.

A do not get me started on her winning Kylo. Yes, I have heard the argument, but I still think it really devalued her as a character. Unless, TLJ does something about it. In short, I do not hate Rey as much as I find her to be wasted potential. I find she is better in Forces of Destiny and aulixiary NC stuff as opposed to her own movie. I am hopeful for her as Rian Johnson is a much better director and knows how to handle defining characters and their subtle.

But as it stands, compared to Wonder Woman; I find Rey so far flat.

I think they’re all valid criticisms of Rey, but I want to let the story play out. At the end of Episode 9, if the things Rey did so easily TFA aren’t somewhat explained then I’ll be with you.

I think one problem with being diehard SW fans is we analyze the movies to a fault. Meaning we are overthinking it simply because we’ve seen the movies so many times. When you watch a new SW movie, we must unlearn what we have learned. We sometimes rationalize, “Wait Luke and Anakin couldn’t do this in Episode 1 and 4, why can Rey do it in Episode 7?”

I try to look at it like they are athletes and everyone blossoms at a different level. Lebron James was making National News as High School player while Michael Jordan was cut from his High School team at one point. In a SW movie, we would wonder why Lebron was so much better then Jordan as a teenager? Rey is no different in that respect, she could be the most powerful Force user ever.

    Fantastic post.

I love Rey. I think she shows great strength and resilience as well as loneliness and vulnerability. The scene of her in the AT-AT shows both. It shows her loneliness and vulnerability as she goes about her business and then shows her strength when she rescues BB8. As a father to two young girls I think her character is a great role model to them. She shows strength and independence as well as caring, compassion and vulnerability. That is another reason while I like Rey so much. Daisy does a great job with the role. She is great at nonverbally displaying emotion. Her Force abilities don’t bother me. I like a good strong Force user. As @Julius Fett has stated this is the first act of the trilogy and her character hasn’t been fully fleshed ou yet. That will come. She will be challenged. She will have to step out of her life of solitude and find her place in this world. She will need to learn how to control and use her newfound powers while the man, the myth, the legend (no not Ric Flair), Luke, is not going to want to help. Not to mention she will be learning more about her past which may challenge her in different ways.

Rey was a great character in TFA. There is so much more she can become in TLJ. I’m looking forward to seeing it.

I think the interesting dynamic about this triliogy compared to the OT and PT is that it's not going to focus on 1 main character arc, but it seems that Rey and Kylo Ren are attached at the hip in terms of fleshing out their characters arcs. The PT was all about Anakin, the OT was all about Luke as they were the dominant character that drove the story. Rey and Ren are going to drive this story, and I think it opens up many possibilities because of that. So I would say for fans to be patient as there is will probably be a lot more about Rey to make sense of what happened in TFA, and of course there is more to come with Ren's character.
