I selected I like her because her character included what her character needed for TFA. We have to remember we only got the first installment of the story unless you go outside of the film and read in the new Expanded universe on any of the characters to get a fuller developing picture. However, I'd have to say anyone saying Rey is the best character since Luke needs to broaden their Star Wars Universe experience a whole lot more. Either that, or they're exaggerating their appreciation of the Rey character for some reason or another.

Take away her parentage backstory and her force abilities, there's nothing much left of her character to like. Except that she collects and trades junk....

Kind of harsh, coming from a fellow female Brit...

Edit: maybe that's why your more critical on her

@BrotherRoyVA I have nothing against her. But I think more people love the idea of Rey and what she represents than Rey herself. But that's just my opinion.

Daisy Ridley's nationality and accent/dialect counts for nothing. There's 65,000,000 of us, so it's nothing special or unique.
Without her parentage question and her Force abilities, Daisy Ridley is basically Rey Steptoe in space. ;)

"Steptoe & Son", a BBC comedy about junk collectors and traders, like Rey from Star Wars
The US comedy "Sanford & Son" is a direct remake of this classic old BBC series.

@LarsSkywalker I can respect that, trust me, I understand some fans go overboard with their fandom and that some fans like the idea Rey represents as a FS character, new Jedi, [insert whatever that is here for the person], etc.

Apart from Han, Chewy, Luke, and Leia (and anyone else I may have missed from the OT), Rey, Finn and Poe are pretty much the same, well more so Rey and Finn:

    1. Mysterious origins that need to be explored.
      1. Despite coming from First Order, Finn's true origins are a mystery.
      2. Poe's origins, well his parents' history is covered in a comic but not addressed in the movie so he just sort of appears (like most of the new characters).
    2. Moving towards their destiny in the universe.
    3. Finding their identity.
For me, that pretty much sums it up. There are some details in between them, but that's the template I saw in TFA. Thus, why I said Rey had what she needed no different from Finn or Poe in TFA.

Well, we still don't know her (Rey) personally, right? ;) Let's hope we get to know her a little bit more in TLJ. Then we'll see if we're getting married to her or not (emperor)

I really love Rey. We've only seen her in one film so far, so obviously anyone's perception of her could change by the time The Last Jedi and Episode IX are released, but I really think she's a great character. I love Daisy Ridley's portrayal of her, I love Rey's fierceness and confidence, I just love everything about her. I think she's an amazing character and I think the badass qualities she displayed in The Force Awakens are just the beginning. I'm excited to see where her story takes her.

I love this character because she has all the reasons to be broken or desperate and yet she strives, she gets things done, she is a good person and she still dreams.

I think she's a good character because she offers the perfect foil to kylo ren. She was born of nothing, parents discarded her, feels lost and has more reason than most to be tempted to the dark side, yet sticks to her guns, while kylo, born of 2 rebel heroes, one of royalty, every reason not to turn. They're complete opposites in that sense. And they both see why the other should be more like themself

Got to say I hated her acting in TFA. The over acting was cringey. She was infinitely better in TLJ and really enjoyed her performance.

I like the character, I just think her abilities need to be justified somehow, you just don't get to do what other jedi have trained years to achieve in a couple of days without an explanation.

Is she that much different to Luke in the OT? People that call her bland and a Mary Sue seem to have forgotten what Luke was like in the OT. We only really saw his Dark Side in the third film - I’m sure we will see Rey explore hers too, in IX.

Luke was a typical whiny teenager with big dreams- who then saw his parental units torched, his mentor killed, his hand chopped off, his best friends in the hands of the enemy, and then found his father was the most evil guy ever- all by by the end of the first two OT movies.

I don't think there's a lot of time for Rey to develop as a character, but I hope I'm wrong. In which case that's going to be one busy film!

Abandoned on Jakku, hard life, faces scary future, kidnapped by the villain, mind probed, mentor killed, best friend cut down, fights villain...rejected again by new mentor, attracted by Dark Side, desperate to learn about her parents, faces Snoke and is tortured, fights guards and then Ren...

She hasn’t had to all that easy, I’d say...

Totally agree. At the end of the day, this trilogy is a female coming to age epic about Rey, just as the original trilogy was a male coming to age epic about Luke. In each trilogy, in the first film each character was a 'child' just starting to see a larger world and doing something mind blowing in that world (Luke taps into the Force and takes out the Death Star, Rey taps into the Force and takes on Kylo Ren); in the second film each character is an 'adolescent,' conflicted and coming to terms about his/her place in the world, not necessarily making the right choices in the process; and in the third film I would predict Rey finds her place and transcends to adulthood, just as Luke did in Episode VI.

People gravitate to Rey because she is the main focus of the sequel trilogy. This is her hero story arc, and as such the entire trilogy is going to wrap itself around her character. I can see how this could lead to tension if you are not a fan of Rey as a character. Yet, I for one love Rey as a character, and find Daisy Ridley to be well-cast for the role. I'm captivated by this trilogy just as much as I was the original trilogy.

I didn't say her life was easy. And in looking at her list, it's really interesting to see that Luke also had all of those things happen. As we know, it was written that there would be deliberate parallels between the two characters, and there they succeeded.

But the key events in Luke's life have no parallel in Rey's. You could call her journey to this point necessary but not sufficient. She needs something to push her over the top, as it were.

One thing that could do that very efficiently would be to resurrect something from her backstory, like that Force vision of her confronting Kylo & the Knights of Ren. That has never been explained. That could give her character the gravitas she needs & explain a lot about her abilities.
