If Maz knows why didn't she tell Han? Or Leia? Why did she tell Rey her family were never coming back when her dad/uncle was upstairs? And if these people don't know and Luke doesn't know - then how can Maz know?

The dialogue in that scene is all about Maz realises that for some reason Rey is important and it is her destiny to find Luke.
The saber calling to her isn't about family heirlooms - it's about Rey discovering her destiny and the Force guiding her to Luke - to bring him back and train to be a Jedi herself.

Indeed. I think that is what the "it's so much bigger" line is about.
In the first 6 films, Anakin had to merely destroy the Sith to bring balance.
But now, Rey has to not only destroy the bad guys but also put an end to the cycle of despair created by Vader.
If she doesn't this will go on and on.
    So what does that mean?

I think it means not winning the war through fighting alone but by peacefully changing the minds of those who fight for the First Order.
I think this is where Finn can come in - he will help lead the mutiny of the Stormtroopers, thus ending the threat of the Empire/FO forever.
Rey's greater task will be in beating Snoke. But I feel she won't do that by killing Ren but by redeeming him. Snoke feeds off the Dark Side - remove it from his army and his apprentice and he will wither and die.

Finally, I think it could mean bringing an end to the Skywalker's. Their power is too great. If the family lives then somewhere along the line another will be turn to the Dark Side, as Vader did, threatening the peace and balance. And if one Skywalker takes over and is at full strength, there will be no stopping them. The Skywalker's must die. And I think Luke knows this...

This is similar to my train of thought, and it seems to be the direction they are heading in. Seeing as some traditional SW fans might not like Rian's decisions, it could be due to how this will not be another defeat the guys in black and celebrate a win with a parade type trilogy.

    Exactly.
MH and DR probably thought that they would have a great relationship - maybe even related.
But it turns out that Luke knows her destiny is to destroy his family and may have come from dark origins herself.
And Daisy will find a washed up Jedi master who has no faith in himself or the Force and can't face up to what has to happen.
That would make for great conflict and originality and I really hope RJ has gone down that path. Otherwise, it is just more of the same...

More reason Rey being related to the Solo or Skywalker family would take away from how significant this plot could become. If she's just another kid born for the OT trio, then history will just repeat.

You could be right. The saber could very well only be calling her so that she will take it to Luke and thus meet her destiny. I just hold the theory that it points to her being a Skywalker.

What I thought was interesting about the saber was it showed Rey the history of the Skywalkers. Maybe it was showing her not to repeat the mistakes they did?

Or that their family is cursed by their power and doomed to failure - that history WILL repeat?

    Something like that.
I think Rey's destiny is to find Luke and become a Jedi. But I also think that in order to bring an end to all this, she has to put an end to them so to speak.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking too, but I think having Luke and Ben killed would not be a good way to end the trilogy, so maybe she needs to find another way?

I must say, this is growing on me.
Taking the saga as a whole, this is still the story of the Chosen One.
We call it *a saga* instead of a serie of movies, because there's a core theme.
And it's not just the blood relation: but that prophecy.

Therefore, it would make sense to end the Skywlaker saga ending the Skywlaker line.

Anakin was the Chosen One, because a "special" being was required to accomplish something.
Once the goal is fully accomplished, you don't need him and his blood line anymore.
The galaxy lived in peace for hundred of years without him and his offspring.

    Full circle.

If they're going to apply the hero's journey till the very end, I honestly see only 2 way to end the Saga:
The hero must "return" to the ordinary world, or at least he must return to the ordinary world the wisdom he gained.

    Therefore:
1 - End of Anakin's blood line (or at least - if Ben/Kylo survives - giving the hint that he's going to live a life of atonement, alone, therefore 0 chances for him to have children)
In this case, the legacy shall be carried out by ordinary people.
Rey among the Jedi. Because the Jedi are ordinary people in that galaxy: the Skywalker were "special" (the C.O.'s blood).
She may be the first of a new ordinary Jedi Order (or calle it as you wish).
Poe in the Resistance-> next new Republic (perhaps that quote from Oscar is telling "the surrogate child" of Leia)
Finn wherever his story arc leads.
That would be a bittersweet ending. But a moving ending. Not obvious at all.
And it doesn't prevent to have a new trilogy any time soon, with Rey, Finn etc...
In that case, the new story will simply have another core theme. Not another Chosen One, but another "focus".

2 - Or Anakin born again.. but in the end. I know it souds crazy, but that's the other way mythology (or let's say the hero's journey) goes.
Things will end almost where they've started. But this time, you'll get the hint that his life is going to be less tragic. And that everything he
and the rest of characters (each and everyone) went through was "needed". It could be cool if nicely done.

There's of course the 3rd chance: Rey and Ben Solo as the grandchildren of Anakin, carrying on the legacy.
But... I don't know. I still think that's just too easy and above all less... deep.

TBH Force opening the door for Rey to access saber in Maz basement is to much optimistic, though I to also believed that is "ok" at first glance.

Force is strong, but opening electronic locked dors in front of someone(without that one using Force) is to much stretch for me.

It think that Maz orchestrated this, arranged"test meeting" of Rey and the saber that she holds in her basement.

I can see that. But only the film can shatter my hopes... in a packed, public theater... right there in front of everyone.

    I'll be fine.

If chosen one dies, there should be I think no time restriction when chosen one reincarnates. Its the will of the Force.

I mean Anakin did bring balance to the Force (they say he did) but whatsoever 30 years after this we have 7 foot tall Master of the Dark side (Snoke) making again obvious mess in the balance of the Force.

Its possible( I even think now likely) that Maz have tested Rey, and now knows she found Chosen (girl).

If this is the case, Maz priority would be to dirrect her to only one who could train the chosen, which is the Obi-wan of new trilogy, Luke.

Or Anakin did his job as the Prophesied Chosen One. But he was the destroyer. Luke was the Redeemer And Rey will be the Rebirth. They are figures in a cycle. More akin to Hinduism were different gods ("Skywalkers" or "Sun Riders") have separate roles within a cycle rather than figures like a "Messiah."

I can't stress how unlikely this is but you know me I'm a sucker for poking absolute statements.

Perhaps Han, Leia, Maz and possibly others know full darn well who she is or figure it out. But rather than have a family reunion they don't tell her.

    WHY NOT!?!?

Because they are fighting an enemy who can read minds. If she knows she is Leia's daughter and they enemy learns it she is in greater danger. If she thinks she is no one then they cannot pluck the thought from her head. The more she knows the more enemies she gains.

    Buck and Conrad (Ordinary People)

    J. J. Abrams: "I had the script for Ordinary People with me the whole time while I was writing Regarding Henry just to reference it—because there was something about that script that just felt like movies, just felt like the real deal and was inspiring. So I’d keep referencing it, just kind of remembering that feeling of a great movie—desperately trying to emulate that." (2005)

    J. J. Abrams: "I realize that that blank page is a magic box, you know? It needs to be filled with something fantastic." "I used to have the 'Ordinary People' script that I'd flip through. The romance of the script was amazing to me; it would inspire me. I wanted to try and fill pages with the same kind of spirit and thought and emotion that that script did." "In terms of the content of it, you look at stories, you think, well, what are stories but mystery boxes? There's a fundamental question -- in TV, the first act is called the teaser. It's literally the teaser. It's the big question. So you're drawn into it. Then of course, there's another question. And it goes on and on. Look at 'Star Wars.' You got the droids; they meet the mysterious woman. Who's that? We don't know. Mystery box! You know? Then you meet Luke Skywalker. He gets the Droid, you see the holographic image. You learn, oh, it's a message, you know. She wants to, you know, find Obi Wan Kenobi. He's her only hope. But who the hell's Obi Wan Kenobi? Mystery box! So then you go and he meets Ben Kenobi. Ben Kenobi is Obi Wan Kenobi. Holy ****! You know -- so it keeps us -- (Laughter) -- have you guys not seen that? (Laughter) It's huge! Anyway --" "So there's this thing with mystery boxes that I started feeling compelled. Then there's the thing of mystery in terms of imagination -- the withholding of information. You know, doing that intentionally is much more engaging."

    https://www.ted.com/talks/j_j_abrams_mystery_box/transcript?language=en (2007)

J.J. Abrams: "I never want to focus on any one thing. When I did ‘Felicity,’ I ended up creating ‘Alias,’ and Damon and I created ‘Lost’ because it was different from anything we had done before. So after Star Trek, I'd like to try something more intimate, but chances are whatever I end up doing next will have some level of special-effects work in it. Then again, two of my favorite movies are Ordinary People and The Philadelphia Story!"

What's stopping the enemy from reading their minds, rather than Rey's, and finding out that way?
Nothing in TFA suggests Maz knows who Rey is. Even more so for Han & Leia.

I don't think so: the Chosen One is.. special.
He is special in the that universe, so much so there's a prophecy about him.
So much so the galaxy didn't need him (or a serie of Chosen Ones) for millennia.
And he is special from a story telling point of view.
He - no one else, not even Luke - is the hero of the whole tale.

But it's true that they told us that Anakin did bring balance.
Point is that was said when the Saga was made of 6 movies...
GL gave us an explaination of Anakin's arc. etc...
And it worked (it works) thou some details were left unclear...
So much so we still debate around the notion of balance, what it does really mean etc..
(and TLJ trailer tells us that's still the point)

That because - I believe - GL always inteded a saga of at least 9 movies.
But of course he wasn't sure he could have done it....

That's the elephant in the room.

Therefore he left a story made of 6 chapters, with a satisfying narrative.
But the seeds of an eventual ST were planted. And they were in PT with the notion itself
    of the Chosen One.
Think about it: GL could have done the PT without the prophecy.
Had he done that, the saga would have been just and only a generational story with
some nice parallels/mirrors between the first and the second act.
    He did more than that...

Therefore, the ST has to solve the riddle the CO and the CO prophecy are once and for all.
It could be done one way or another.
But I don't think the ST's purpose or end game may be to add another chosen one to the list.
