I had create this thread to know the feelings and thoughts from ALL the friends here in The Cantina of.... What do you feel when you watch Rey using a lightsaber???Watching Rey during ALL the movie make me remember with nostalgia one person: Luke Skywalker.I'm NOT saying that she is a Skywalker or MAYBE she is.What i'm trying to said is that watching her she remember me Luke.I feel so happy because it bring me back those memories from Luke and SW.I feel happiness because i feeling that same feeling when i watch ANH.I love ALL the movies BUT specially the ANH.I having a GREAT love for Daisy Ridley character Rey.I don't know why i cry everytime i watch her in the movie. She is so special and i think JJ had made a GREAT discovery picking her.For me this movie will be the BEST(SWTFA) of the other 2 that are coming. This one has a special touch for me.My question is still in the air for you:What did you feel when you watch Rey with a lightsaber???Did you feel the same as watching Luke with a lightsaber???

I really enjoyed Daisy Ridley's performance. I think she did an outstanding job giving life, mind, and personality to the character Rey.

It was wonderful to watch her take her "first steps into a larger world" -- the inception of her hero's journey.

The parallels between Rey and Luke are there to be found and appreciable.

Seeing the lightsaber go to her at that pivotal moment and watching her be reminded of the Force, closing her eyes to concentrate, was, for me, a superbly manifested awakening.

Her pathway to the Force is comparable to Luke's, but they are unique in character and the courses they take to embracing their Jedi abilities.

So, while I was reminded, at times, of Luke while watching her character develop, I saw Rey very much in her own light, especially when she became aglow with the Force once she let it flow through her in her encounter with Kylo Ren.

i was impressed by how awkward she was. she's a good fighter, but unskilled with this particular weapon and spends most of the fight running.
if it recalled Luke at all, for me it was in TESB when, worn down by Vader, Luke is retreating, swinging wild and hitting nothing.

once she centers herself, she manages to focus and strike back. it's still a bit wild, but it's enough to take Kylo Ren by surprise, which was all the advantage that she needed. again, sort of like Luke against Vader in ROTJ when he taps into the Dark to beat Vader down.

i like those similarities. Luke never faced Vader in ANH, so it's great we got to see Rey already at this level of challenge.

I was behind her the whole time. I was already overly enamored with TFA up until she used the light saber, but once that baby lit up again I was in SW heaven. It felt right, it looked right and everyone involved did a stellar job. It did hark back to Luke's early uses of the saber too and I'm quite happy for Rey as character to continue to wield that saber.

I was disappointed. Before TFA it took years of training to learn to use the force, for Rey it took days... The fight scene itself was good, but didn't feel real. Through the whole movie, whenever the characters got into any difficulty they just used "Abrams magic" and succeeded (escaping on the "junk ship", jumping to hyperspace from the inside of a ship, when Rey just rips off a part and the engine is suddenly working, flying through the shield at light speed, a massive weapon? 'nah we'll just blow it up like the others, the untrained heroine realises she can use the force and defeats her trained, strong opponent).

It was OK I guess. I didn't have any problem with it. I guess if the whole plot wouldn't have been drilled into my head at that point in time I would've been a bit p**sed but since at that point it had dawned on me that everything msw said was true, I had calmed down a bit.

Wasn't surprised at all. It was obvious that Rey was the future hero of this story.

Haha, you gave me a troll rating for that!? :p

So main characters in a popular movie franchise are supposed to die immediately, the moment they encounter any form of problem?

Loved it, she wields it naturally, her fights look really real. The fight was scary and intense. The saber just suits her so well - even more than Kylo. She's perfect with it, Daisy is such a fantastic actress and a good person, am glad JJ and KK chose her to be the film's poster girl and you can see why she is the star. Star Wars is back baby, its back and its beautiful.

I loved both the character and Daisy Ridley's performance (the acting was very good overall in TFA).
And yes, the moment she force pulled the lightsaber into her hands (like in the tale of King Arthur?) and the force theme started, it was the very first moment I felt really star warsy since the originals. I agree however that she defeating a lot more experienced warrior might wasn't the best idea, but this can easely salvaged by saying the force is immensly strong in her for some reason (and some leaked scripts prognose that the force itself is starting to act unpredictable).

So, even if the fight itself isnt, but that very moment with the force theme was indeed right on the spot. Honesly, imo there isnt really any moment like that in the entire prequel trilogy (if you found one please reply to this comment), because we dont care about the characters there, especialy not those who were introduced in the prequels. Not a single moment where you would feel THAT feeling (Very similar to the binary sun scene - which is one of my favourite scenes of all time in any movie- without any word, only the visuals, the music and the character meditates more emotions than dozens of pages of dialogue). And JJ managed to do this with a completly new character in only one movie. Bravo. Honesly TFA pretty much exceeded my expectations. Its not perfect by far, but for me it was lot better than I expected after the prequels. It was one of the most emotional movies I've seen in a long time.

Not true. Luke uses the Force in ANH after a single 3 minute training session and a few force chats with Obi-Wan Kenobi. In TPM, Anakin instinctively uses the Force, with no training at all, to boost his reflexes enough that he can fly in the pod races; something which apparently no other human is capable of doing.

Rey's instinctive use of the Force in TFA is well within established Force use canon (AND, for all we know she might have had basic training as a child).

As for the lightsaber combats, I liked that they were raw and unsophisticated; none of the three combatants know particularly well what they're doing (Rey is WAY more technically proficient in bo fighting for instance). To me, this gave the fights a rawer and realer feel than most of the choreographed ballet fights of the PT, and was quite remenicent of the OT. In short, the TFA lightsaber fighting looks grounded and real; something one can believe in. (I hope we'll see the lightsaber fighters increase in skill and sophistication over the next films, while managing to keep it real and believable).

Hello Light_Savior my friend. It was the best performance ever. I did not see Daisy Ridley acting as Rey, I seen Rey acting as a Jedi. Big difference. And when she closed her eyes and let the force flow through her I seen a Jedi by the name of Rey.

    10 thumbs up from me.

Religious debate in "the church of the force" thread. I don't believe in the bible so I was crucified in the same manner their God was. Don't ever mix booze, religion, and now add star wars my friend.

I though it was an awesome moment, it might be still conjecture, but I had a feeling when I saw the movie that they were slowly revealing she was a skywalker, I was still unsure up until that moment she force pulled the lightsabre. She pulled the sword from the stone, her sword, the skywalker heirloom. Seeing her fight was awesome in the snow, it had the drama and intensity and also the great aesthetics. And really that blue lightsabre fits the visuals of her character so well, her outfit already has a jedi feel to it, seeing the sabre in her hands literally made me and the audience cheer and then cry, because next to everyone knows what it meant. Skywalkers
