Rey obviously has a Mary Sue complex in TFA, and many fans complained about that. IHowever I believe that was purposely written into her character for effectand in Ep. 8 that may become tainted, once she learns about her past. What are your thoughts?

Some people have a Mary Sue complex with Rey. Don't mix the words. I have absolutely no problem with Rey.

i'm with @Bandini on this one.

with that being said, i've long held the thought that Rey would get into some darker stuff over the course of the next two episodes while Ben makes something of a come back to the light. in the end i think they help each other find good again and all that fun stuff. so yeah, i agree that her character is going to go through some realness coming up here!

She is definitely not a Mary Sue.

She will for sure go through some dark times just like Luke did. Nothing is going to be as easy as it seemed.

I don't get this claim of her being a 'Mary Sue'.

Rey lived on a ruthless planet by herself for several years. She needs skills to survive in the desert, therefore she knows how to fight, repair stuff and speak different languages. Besides Star Wars was always about normal people who suddenly showed some amazing skills after they had being tossed into an extraordinary situation.

To come back to the topic: Yes, Rey will go through dark times and she has to face with enormous challenges which she won't be able to handle at first. That's called "The Hero's Journey".

Luke Skywalker took three films to learn how to swing a lightsabre, pull and push objects, do Jedi mind tricks, have force visions, defeat a Sith Lord in combat and was trained by the two top Jedi Masters.

Rey learned all this in a couple of days in just one film without any training from Jedi Masters.

End of debate. Mary Sue confirmed.
    Close thread.
    ;)

He ignited a lightsaber and swung and practiced using one on the MF in ANH.

He used the force while out maneuvering the best pilot and force user in the galaxy that being Vader to destroy the Deathstar...hmmmm...all with little to nothing training...hmmm

She's not even close to a Mary Sue, she a lighter character, who has been through a hard time. Left on a planet, with literally no one! NO ONE, having her back. Luke, Leia, Anakin these characters had pretty soft childhoods, loving families/ parent in a supportive environment.... Rey didn't have any of that, as a child suriving in the desert, alone.

Luke used the force a metric ton of times in the first movie, this kid got into a X Wing having never flown before and out classed season pilots! PLEASE! People don't mouth of about it because it's the OT. We know Luke literally had zero training, he was an adult and did that. We already know Rey was trained before Jakku and in that moment when clashing with Kylo we don't know what she accessed from her youth. Ep VIII will explain I think a lot of what was lost in those "Mary Sue" moments......

i dont think that its a matter of her being a "mary sue" rather that her character wasn't written as strongly as she could have been in my opinion...if she learns about her past, then it would only make her character better.

She's gonna be on a rock with just Luke. Then Darth Emo shows up with his Knights of Stimpy. And that's just half the movie. What bad things will happen to her? Not much. I doubt she's losing a limb cuz we can't harm this alpha female.

The worst thing that will happen to Miss Perfect is she loses an argument with Luke or with the (yoda ghost)(anakin ghost)(obi-wan ghost).
