In The Last Jedi we learn Rey's parents were Nobodies that sold her off for drinking money. They were Junk traders and died on Jakku, currently in a paupers grave.

Kylo Ren makes them sound horrible. Was he exaggerating the truth to hurt Rey more so he could be the one that says "you're nothing, but not to me?"

So why did they trade Rey? Why did they wait until she was 5 or 6 years old to finally abandon her?

Here is the story as told by Jakku locals...

When Rey was born she was a beautiful baby girl like any other human baby. She was always happy and never gave her momma any trouble. But as she got older, her parents began to grow fearful of Rey. She could do things at a young age that didn't make sense to them.

At 6 months old Rey began talking. Not just momma or daddy, she would complete full sentences and asking complicated questions.

At 9 months old Rey pulled herself out of her crib and began walking. Her mother was astonished. She never tried to teach Rey to walk, but she just did it. Not only could she walk, but she could run and do flips.
Her mother was proud...but scared. Why was her daughter so advanced?

At 2 years old she was fluent not only in Basic, but in Droid speak. Her parents could not figure out how she learned these things. She was never taught anything. Rey would speak to the droids in the area and get the latest gossip from the droid pilots and repair droids.

At age 3 Rey began fixing things. Complicated things like hyperdrives and ship engines. She found a schematic and could figure out how to assemble and disassemble complicated equipment.

Things were getting out of hand. Her parents grew more and more afriad. They tried to hide her from the Jakku society. They didn't want anyone to know their child was a freak.

    They began drinking...a lot.

At age 4 Rey began building a Speeder for her father to use. However she needed parts and they were far too heavy for her to carry herself. She would ask the Teedo's in the area to bring her the parts she needed. It usually took her asking two of three times, but eventually they would just do what she asked. The Teedo's didn't even know why they did it.

At age 5 Rey completed the Speeder and presented it to her father. He had been drinking heavily that day. Her mother as well. Rey was so excited to show her parents, but the reaction she received wasn't what she expected.

They immediately grabbed her and dragged her down to Niima Outpost where Unkar Plutt, the junk boss of Jakku had his Junk shop. Rey's parent's had done business with Unkar all the time. This time, they were't there to trade junk.

When Rey's parent's explained to Unkar all of the things she was doing, he was very interested. Rey could be a great scavenger for him one day he thought. So they made a deal. Rey's parent's traded her for enough money for her parents to drink for an entire season. They celebrated by taking a trip to a local Casino Ship orbiting in the Outter Rim.

Soon after their Rey-less vacation her parent's returned to Jakku. They moved far from Niima Outpost and eventually died from excessive drinking.

The reveal about Rey's parents was the right decision, because it allowed Rey to become a true feminist icon. If the parents had been important, it would have undermined the strength of Rey's focus in the trilogy

Right. Because for a woman to be truly strong & independent, she must have shitty parents

Given the disparity between female and male protagonists in major franchises, yes, it would have hurt Rey

Pretty sure Leia was a feminist icon despite being brought up as a princess, and then Lady Vader.

    Wonder Woman is a goddess.

Leia isn't a proper feminist icon, because she's connected to royalty

You must feel Rey is a weak character if her strength in your eyes is based off of who her parents are

Are we really hijacking this to argue about feminism? Nothing I posted had anything to do with feminist icons. It was a tongue in cheek answer to the question of who Rey's parents are while explaining why she was abandoned.

Make another moronic thread if that's what you want to talk about Trok.

It helps that Rey is independent, but if her parents were important there'd still be Daisy Ridley's brilliant performance

So you're telling me, if it turned out that Rey's parents were elites from Canto Bight, Rey wouldn't be a feminist icon?

Politics defines how characters are written

Probably yes. It would be detrimental to Rey's status, but since Rey has different details to Leia, Rey could withstand the damage more

It's reasonable to imagine that Rian Johnson ditched Rey's parents because of politics, so the issue is reasonably not off topic

I think it would be fascinating to one day get a true story about what happened. Even if it was just a spin off novel or something.

Trok hates rich people, but also probably loves the Clintons, and Obamas of the world. Hypocrisy at it's best.

They were always going to be terrible parents who didn't care about her.

The fact that Daisy Ridley kept comparing Rey to the movie Matilda was the biggest hint from interviews.

The whole point of my original post was to share an ironic look at why Rey was abandoned. She was abandoned for the same reason many fans hate her character, she could do crazy things with no training. Apparently the folks on these boards only see their bias and can't see irony or humor.

Oh wow. Check out this bad fan fiction using hyperbole to present an "argument," that Rey is a Mary Sue. Now, with a backstory like that it'd definitely would fall into Mary Sue category, but we don't know if her powers manifested at a young age, and it WOULD be ridiculous if they manifested so extravagantly. All we know is that her parents abandoned her. We don't know why, but at this point I'm fine with the basic "scum bag parents," explanation. I don't need the "they were scared of her powers," trope, as that cheapens the character, and would be ridiculous as you point out.

On the "Feminist icon" thing, I think it's best we all start ignoring the SJW troll known as Trok until the mods ban them. It's become a problem.
