Not if she disassembles it and only uses the middle piece. That's what I meant. People are reading too far into this. I just feel a staff by design is reminiscent of the Double bladed light saber and it would be cool as hell (IMO) that she is the first Jedi we see on screen that has one. Sheesh.

That's fair enough. I think it will be cool if she has a double bladed light saber

I'm sick of "special" lightsabers. One of the worst parts of the PT was wondering what "cool and different" variation on the lightsaber the bad guy would have. To me, its putting the focus on the wrong thing in an effort to sell toys. The weapon is just the weapon, the interesting part should be the hero who uses the weapon.

If every movie needs something new or different when it comes to lightsabers, it won't be long before we're this point:

Oh, don't be ridiculous. HAHA The Double bladed light saber was canon far before Kylo Ren's cross guard saber (Which I accept, but don't really like). Plus, Rey could be seriously out numbered and at times will have to use both blades to fend off enemies. That's the cool part. Maul used a single blade against a single Jedi, but double blades with two or more Jedi..

But it would show more skill if she uses only a single blade plus Mauls was two single blade fused together which is much easer to craft then one long double ended lightsaber which I am not sure would even be possible to create. So just a single blade for me & I like Ren's design as it shows how his train is incomplete & so he has a rustic & slightly Unelegant design

I'm not sure what you're talking about. Who said it was one long double ended what?? haha I meant taking apart her staff and using some of the parts as a good luck charm OR just creating a double bladed light saber the way Maul did. I don't literally mean put two crystals in her staff and call it good. That's why I put the word 'remastered' into the pole.

Your point is very well-reasoned and eloquently stated. However, it is completely negated by the following two simple points:

    A. It's a movie
    B. A double bladed light saber looks cool!

    :p

I thought you were talking about how she should have a double bladed lightsaber because of her staff skills which led me to think you wanted to convert her staff to a lightsaber. So you just want a double ended lightsaber with no connection to her staff (having bits of her staff doesn't really work for me) which is fair enough & would look cool but I would rather have Rey construct a single blade with no connection to her past as this would renforce the image of her journey to becoming a Jedi.

I respect your opinion, but I think you missed the emphasis JJ Abrams placed on the staff. She has a special connection to her staff and there were a ton of shots focusing on the thing. I'm speaking upon what would be possibilities of what they were forshadowing

I sure hope that staff has some significance. I’ll be super bummed if it ends up being some random piece of scaffolding she salvaged from that star destroyer (or wherever) for self-defense. Bit of a red herring in that case.

I think she uses Luke's green one, the blue one has more emotional attachment for Luke.

About the whole 1 blade vs 1 enemy and 2 blades vs 2 enemies.... yeah, it doesn't really work that way. The second blade doesn't add nearly enough advantages to be considered reasonable, and its negative points completely negates the positive features. Consider this:
    • The second blade will always be at a 180 degrees angle to the primary blade
    • The optimal saber striking angle is around 90 degrees and maybe 60 degrees for parrying.
I'll tell you this; It'd be damn well hard to fight off both enemies reliably while having to focus on the strike of one enemy and having no separate maneuverability of the second blade. Therefore, all you can do is try your best to block the attack of one enemy, presumably the one in front of you, try your best not to kill yourself with either of the two blades, and pray to the force that the second enemy will strike at the blade and not your fully exposed back, or if he strikes in the direction of the secondary blade, pray that he hits it exactly at the time and angle so it hits your blade and deflects reliably. Not so you block the strike ( remember, you're blocking the enemy in front of you, you are positioning your blade so you have the best chance to block his strike ), but so the enemy behind you somehow misses your exposed legs and back, and hits the blade while you are for the most part unaware of what he is doing as you are, yet again, during those one or two seconds, trying to block the enemy in front of you.

Now, you might be thinking " well, how did Darth Maul manage to reliably hold off two Jedi at once? ", and the answer is quite simple. First of all, it's over-choreographed to perfection where it seems almost unrealistic, and secondly, re-watch the fight with more attention to detail. You'll spot that half the time either Obi Wan or Qui Gon have the perfect opportunity to swing at and kill Darth Maul, but instead, because the battle has to continue, they instead swirl their blade around, presumable to add momentum and force to their swing, which then, of course, hits Darth Maul's blade at a safe distance from his body.

I know this is a rather long post, and I know that all this is negated by the fact that Star Wars is a movie franchise, and if a lightsaber is cool, then no matter how unrealistic, it will be made realistic, but I just wanted to point some things out.

No, these are really valid points to consider. I guess I only thought of it being cool that a Jedi has an optional double bladed lightsaber. I'm no swordsman, so I wouldn't actually know how correct you are that there aren't methods of fighting to which a double blade would work to ones advantage. I still love the Maul fight(up until Obi-Wan flipping over and cutting Maul in half so easily). Choreographed fighting was I think necessary in a time where Jedi/Sith were highly trained and used the force to anticipate where the next strike would be thus looking as though it is choreographed since that is essentially what it is :)

I really think Rey is going to use Luke's old saber, especially in TLJ. In the SW Launch Bay in Hollywood Studios, the blue saber on display is labeled as Rey's saber. It mentions in the description that she tries to give it back to Luke but I think the fact it is labeled as Rey's saber suggests she will have it in the short term at the least.

I think she'll use Luke's for the 8th film and for the 9th film onwards have one of her own.

    1. Either a double bladed one (blue & green) using both crystals after Luke's death
    2. or a Lightsaber pike

Regardless I think we need a Lightsaber construction scene at some point where she uses the force to put most/all of the pieces together before firing it up.
