I want to open up the discussion about what we know of Rian Johnson's new trilogy and what that might mean for this one, specifically as it relates to Rey and the Skywalkers.

Obviously we have all speculated about Rey's lineage. The main threads:

    - Daughter of Luke: Rey Skywalker is strongly hinted in TFA, primarily through Maz's cryptic words to Rey and the fact that Anakin's lightsaber calls to her, and the assumption that we expect a Skywalker protagonist in what is unofficially called The Skywalker Saga.

    - Granddaughter of Obi-Wan: Rey Kenobi is also strongly hinted in TFA, through callbacks here and there (her scaling the inner chamber of Starkiller Base similar to Obi-Wan in the Death Star, her using Obi-Wans force-trick to fool the stormtrooper), her British RP / Coruscanti accent which is the same accent as Obi-Wan and is not native to Jakku, and the prominence of Obi-Wan's voice in the force vision.

    - Daughter of Leia/Han: Rey Solo is not hinted in TFA at all -- neither Leia nor Han seem to recognize her, and though she develops a kind of Father/Daughter dynamic with Han, there is no allusion to Han having a lost daughter. It's possible their long-lost daughter is simply not mentioned because it wasn't relevant to the story, but the only reason we're speculating about this at all is because we expect a Skywalker protagonist, and if it's not via Luke it must be via Leia.

    - Related to a dark side user like Snoke or Palpatine: Rey is so wholesome in TFA that dark side Rey seems doubtful. However, this might be a good way to emphasize how dangerous her force powers are, and also make her struggle with the dark side more convincing, so it's possible RJ may choose this direction. If she finds out her lineage is from the dark side, might she feel the dark side is her destiny?

    - Related to nobody of importance: Rey Nobody is what TFA on the surface is telling us. Another way to read Maz's words is that the past will not reveal itself -- what's important is moving forward and making a new family (being "adopted" in a way by Luke, and joining the "Force" family).

From the press release on Rian Johnson's new trilogy: "In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." I.e. This new trilogy is not related to the Skywalker saga, and will likely not feature anyone related to the Skywalkers. The reference to "corner of the galaxy" and "never before explored" if taken literally might suggest a story set in the unknown regions.

It's possible that Disney/Lucasfilm is abandoning their stand-alone film series after Ep IX and moving toward a release schedule that spotlights parallel trilogies every other year (a Skywalker saga release one year, and an RJ saga release the next), but if they do keep the current release schedule of main saga / stand-alone, this would indicate an end to the Skywalker movies, with RJ's trilogy becoming the new central storyline.

If the latter, I think this may be an additional clue that Rey is not a Skywalker, at least by blood, and Ep IX will see closure to the Skywalker saga, with Rey representing the Skywalkers in spirit only, i.e. she simply represents the embodied continuation of the Force. Given this, I think the most likely lineage for her is Rey Nobody or Rey Kenobi.

Of course, she could be revealed as Rey Skywalker and they could decide to end the Skywalker saga anyway, or simply pause the Skywalker saga for now and revisit it in 20 years with an older, crankier Rey. If this is the case, Disney/Lucasfilm may just have the longterm viability of the franchise in mind, and are setting the stage for multiple sagas to draw from for movies, TV, comics, merchandise, etc.

    What do you all think?

I don't think it means anything. It could be a new start following the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, or it could be intended as the tent-pole series while the Skywalker Saga takes a break for a few years. Although very unlikely, it could be intended to run concurrently with the next Skywalker Saga Trilogy. And none of those things provide any clues about Rey's last name.

The only thing it means for certain is that Disney/Lucasfilm understands that they can't keep treading on familiar ground indefinitely if they want the Star Wars franchise to continue to flourish in the years to come. So good for them - and us.

Star Wars Saga is an episodic generational story following a main Skywalker character in a trilogy. There was a 16 year gap between the release of Episode VI and Episode I and a 32 year gap between the release of Episode VI and Episode VII. Why expect any different between the release of Episode IX and Episode X? Did people really think Episode X, XII, and XII were happening in immediately after Episode IX? They shouldn't, they'd give that series of movies a break if they were to continue it. And if they don't continue it, that has no bearing whatsoever on who Rey is or whether or not Kylo Ren dies or not. The story just ends and that's that just like Episode VI was the so-called 'final word' for 29 years. Leia was a Skywalker and didn't die. Luke was Skywalker and didn't die. 'The end' (for a long time). Additionally, we have no idea where or when in the timeline the new non-Skywalker trilogy will take place.

    Main character is Skywalker-descended
The sequel trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, Star Wars: Episode IX) - continuation of Skywalker Saga with Rey
...books and comics and video games...

    Main character is not Skywalker-descended
    Star Wars Rebels (Ezra Bridger)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Jyn Erso)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (Han Solo)
unannounced Kenobi movie (Obi-Wan Kenobi TBD)
new Rian Johnson kickstarted trilogy (TBD)
...books and comics and video games...

Pretty clear to me: new Saga episode movies - Skywalker descendant focus; other movies - non-Skywalker focus

That's also how Kennedy and Horn and Iger have defined them as separate. One is considered the Skywalker Saga; the other movies are not.

I think the assumption for my query was that RJ's trilogy would open up a new "saga", if you will, that focuses on a different set of characters in a different area of the galaxy. It makes sense for the longterm viability of the franchise for Disney to establish multiple sagas (as they've arguably done to a lesser extent with Rebels on TV), but I think we can all agree (or maybe not) that the movies are the showcase pieces. So it's DIFFERENT and SIGNIFICANT to map out an entire trilogy of films that aren't centered on the Skywalkers.

I understand those who feel this has no bearing on Rey's lineage or the Skywalker saga in general, and that very well may be the case, but it is significant and worth speculation on how it might impact existing intellectual property and storylines, i.e. I would not lump this with one-offs like Rogue One or Solo, which are not sagas, and which are still playing in the Skywalker sandbox.

It's really too early to say, but being pragmatic it seems unlikely we won't see more stories with Rey/Finn/Poe/BB-8/Luke/Chewie/R2-D2/C3PO. At this point these characters are too big to simply be put on ice.

I'm of the opinion that RJ will attempt to create something in the unknown regions. It'll take place in the same timeline. If it's a hit then Lucasfilm can combine the worlds down the road. If the new trilogy doesn't work they can leave it alone and revisit the Skywalkers. Marvel did this with Guardians of the Galaxy. The story worked and they're not adding it to the Avengers. If had been a bomb they could have just let it go.

One thing is for sure: People need to stop dreaming about Rian's trilogy being connected to the Skywalkers. It's not gonna happen.

JJ talked in a recent interviews of making brave decisions in IX. Personally the biggest and boldest decision any one could make is to end the Skywalker family line. Now does he have the balls to do it or not? I hope so but am not sure him and Lucasfilm have enough conviction to do it.

Personally I don't think the announcement of a new trilogy has any bearing on the Skywalker saga. I think the are just taking from the experience they gained by doing R1.

R1 proved that the SW brand is more than capable of drawing audiences into a story that isn't focused around the Skywalker family. I think the will set the story far into the past ie the old republic. They've disregarded all the old EU so in that time frame Rian has all the creativity he wants and doesn't have to worry about continuity.

I think it is likely to be an almost entirely new story in entirely new surroundings with entirely new characters.

The Skywalker story is likely to be shelved for the duration then possibly revisited in the future. That way they cover all the bases and leave no avenues closed.

It makes perfect sense in regards to extending the life and possible revenue return on their multi billion dollar investment. It will keep the story fresh and will avoid over saturating the market and its audience.

And I think its the absolute right thing to do. Once again Disney..... Take a bow

I'd be happy for the Skywalker linage to end because family constraints are already shackling the GFFA far too much. I think it would be totally amazing if the next chosen one was not even human. The franchise would have limitless possibilities. That is so much more interesting than a Skywalker man / woman sprouting out another bouncing baby and it starts all over again. I mean we have had three generations now. I beg to god Rey is new because as it is, its already boring me.

100% getting rid of blood Skywalkers past episode 9 is like getting rid of the Federation post Voyager/Nemesis in Trek.

Nope! And nope, nope nope nope! No!

Thier gonna lose many a fan.

I like the idea of a trilogy that perhaps has touch points to the existing Episodes but is unshackled from the existing characters and legacy. And just keeping it a buck/100, this is the perfect time to expand everything, the galaxy, the technology, and the leads. Seriously, let's tap into some untapped demographics for the leads.

After RotJ and Lucas insistence, I thought it was the end of the Skywalker Saga there and then. And then the ST was announced - I was unsure about how they'd actually continue it. But what I felt from the beginning was that in order to preserve the quality, essence and meanfulness of the saga, they'd have to find a way to end "The Tragedy of Darth a Vader" come episode IX.

You can't just keep on telling stories about Skywalker's without it becoming either predictable or dull or indeed both. Not only that but the Skywalker Saga is centrally about Darth Vader. His life, his death and his legacy. There isn't really anything meaningful to be told about him beyond the adventures of his children and grandchild.

My view is that it is very difficult to come up with new stories based beyond IX that isn't about the Skywalker family if they don't die off in IX. Their power and history dictates their future. If a Skywalker is around, then they will either be the hero (with the very great threat of turning bad) or the villain (who needs redeeming). If there is to be another trilogy, regardless of where it is based in the GFFA, then we will forever be waiting for a Skywalker to turn up and be the hero or villain. The ability to create new stories with new dynamics will be stifled. The questions about why Skywalker X has fallen will be centred around the idea that he or she is related to Vader. Don't we want to get away from that?

It could work out ok if you're telling smaller stories, based on some obscure world and are doing it in one standalone film. But let's face it, a trilogy should be epic. If the stakes aren't high and we know a Skywalker is around anyway, then where is the tension?

Finally, I would personally just love to see something unique be created. I want this trilogy to look utterly different and be set well beyond the life of the Skywalker clan. Keep the Force, the Jedi and lightsabers. But beyond that...I want something truly different! Otherwise we will just be getting the same regurgitated rehash of the OT over and over. Star Wars was and should always be original. It should stretch the imagination and remain relevant (even when telling age of mythological stories). As much as the PT can be panned, it was bold in its visual and narrative choices. It opened the galaxy up and despite how badly executed the films may have been, the excitement for each release was immense because it was new. I want RJ's imaginative abilities put to the test. I want him to create a trilogy that is truly unique and that my children can own as their own. I fear that keeping this about he Skywalker's will prevent that and I believe the evidence so far suggests that LFL may think the same...

For me too, it's about the Force ! Having a new story with only new characters is a very good idea.

Stop making links, just tell a story and a new one. We see there that those family obsession have been too much lately, we don't speak about stories and SW universe but just about blood and who's related to who ... It's a big galaxy not a happy families game.

I think that, even though Rey is a Skywalker, the trilogy will end, but her story, alongside Finn and Poe, will continue in one form or the other in the newly anounced live-action tv-series and/or stand-alone films.

I think the RJT (Rian Johson Trilogy) will take place in the past. But we NEED Skywalkers in the future.

You could gave them smaller roles like Lando or even smaller like Maz.

    a) It wasn't the name that made us love the Skywalker family stories, but the characters and the story itself. If Rey isn't a Skywalker or indeed we have a new trilogy about a new family then, if done well, won't we love them equally? Or to put it another way, if we find out Rey isn't a Skywalker and then a new trilogy is made later with her in it (no Luke etc), would less people watch it? I highly doubt that.
    b) If Skywalker's are in the future films then they will dictate the story. Their power and history is unavoidable. Thus it might be that we NEED them to be dead to allow new stories to be told.
    c) The Skywalker's cannot play bit part roles - they are too powerful and will always be centre stage.
