It is funny how these actors know so little about the stories they are acting in.

I don't think they thought Maz's comments to Rey would be adopted by both the Rey Skywalker camp and the Rey Random camp. They thought it was definitive because they already knew.

So it was not a secret until they realized it was not definitive to the fans?

Based on what she knew, she though the answer was obvious - even if the movie didn't state it explicitly. Granted, the fact she couldn't talk about it openly should have been a big clue it wasn't as obvious as she thought.

I am of the opinion that the family she's waiting for are not coming back. But someone else can. Meaning her parents aren't coming back. But she can meet her destiny join the only fight that matters and bring hermit in chief back to the galaxy.

They keep secrets because we will endlessly feed social media with our theories based on scant evidence.

I just took it to mean they'd never be back on Jakku not never back in her life.

I think JJ was so specific in referencing Obi-wan with a number of Rey scenes that were pivotal. Even by JJ's standards of ripping off famous or just easy to replicate moments and with so many Mary Sue/fanboy TFA scenes of Rey, the Kenobi stuff stood out

The mind control scene with the stormtrooper, climb on the SK wall, warnings to Kylo about his nature (regarding power, Vader, and evil no less), the "first steps" audio aren't on the nose, they are punches in the face.

Her living alone, in the desert, wearing tan linen, being dismissive and dangerous to the unsavory locals (and offering local info to a recent arrival..) is kind of a reach in one sense, but pretty substantial connection when you look at the movie as a whole.

Her accent, which was acknowledged as intentional, is such a big clue. She's not impersonating AG, but it's the accent of the elite like OWK always sounded, close to Leia, Mon Mothma, and Imperial officers in the OT, not like Rebels in the OT or TFA.

I think her and Hux could be siblings and it work very well story wise, but I'd have a tougher time believing she was Luke's daughter.

Sure but then you hear Daisy say its obvious. When you look back at that line and it feels like it is removing options.

It feels like it's convincing her to not go back to Jakku.
Not the same, IMO, as removing options....from a certain point of view

I used to think (and hope) that she's a random character. Now I believe she's a Kenobi. The backstory will be pretty convoluted but an Obi-Wan movie would take care of that.

The SW fanbase will be divided. Each one of us has his/her own expectations for the sequels and very often these expectations contradict one another (you want Rey to be Luke's daughter, other don't want her to be related to Luke.) There's no coming back to a blissful state after the first Star Wars, when everybody was enamoured with the George Lucas' creation.

    @Pawek_13

Which is y we have the anthology stuff. We shouldn't all b this split.

Could you imagine some 1 back in say around 1984/85/86 saying "Boy i hope Luke doesn't have any kids!"

    Or.

"You know what would be awesome! If Han & Leia have kids who become evil like Vader! Then they try to kill the big 3!"

    It boggles my mind.

People used to just be excited for new content.
Now it's gotta match narrow head canons or it stinks

I used to believe she was Luke's daughter. Now, I believe she's someone random and that Kylo Ren will be redeemed (and become the "Skywalker" of the new stories, via bloodline). I also think we might get a plot-twist role-reversal of Rey and Kylo in TLJ, making Kylo the protagonist and Rey the antagonist.

A major issue is people are only looking at part of Maz's dialog instead of the entire context:

The bolded lines are key here. The entire conversation is taking place in the context of Rey wanting to go back to Jakku. Maz has no way of knowing why Rey thinks someone is coming back for her, just that she believes someone is. It's equally apparent that after fourteen years the wait is in vain and Maz can sense Rey knows that too, deep down. She's not saying anything about who Rey is waiting for, she doesn't know that. She's trying to get Rey to move forward with her life.
    Also, this line:
is a complete non-sequitur if Luke has no prior relation to Rey. In that case, Maz has completely changed the subject mid-sentence.

I agree completely. The first time I saw TFA, the wall-climbing/sneaking around Starkiller Base moment stood out like a sore thumb. I've never really been of the Rey Kenobi camp, but that, the mind trick, and the British accent do tell me maybe the connection is real.

    So this.....

The problem with this theory is that moving forward the main characters of the "Skywalker Saga" will be Something Solo.............
