The reason i don't think it is just a staff and why i think it is similar to a yari is because it is not balanced right for just a staff. It is larger on one end than the other. A bojutsu or staff fighting style would be more difficult with one end being heavier than the other. It is not a small difference either the top end is much larger and heavier than the bottom end

If it's not a staff then what the hell is it? Remember that GIF from the SDCC video of Rey twirling her staff against those Guavian Guards with nothing else to it?

Its Plagueis' staff. His real name is Snoke, and Kylo Ren needs it back to resurrect him from the dead. He's guided by voices.

Interesting. So the alleged McGuffin of the hunt for Vader/Luke's lightsaber would turn out to be a red herring.

Maybe its used not only for fighting but for other things like vaulting and acrobatic type stuff. Kind of a multi tool.

This is making me think maybe Rey doesn't turn into a Jedi knight but a new class of Jedi she would rather be. If she's against using a lightsaber then maybe she's inventing a new class by using only a staff. Jedi Monk, Jedi Deffender or something like Shaolin Monk Wushu. Might be cool.

Kind of makes since. She's a scavenger, she collects parts and made up her own type of weapon / tool.

That's my theory anyway. Also think Kylo Ren dies and Phasma will 'continue what you started' and become Kylo Ren at the end.

I don't know what it is, i just know it isn't designed like a basic staff. It is off balanced making basic bo fighting more difficult and the large end seems to detailed to just be something you bash people on the head with.Plus i noticed that in every picture of rey with the staff she is holding the larger end up or in front of her the way you would carry a spear or polearm weapon. I could be wrong maybe they did just want to give her a cool looking stick to hit people with, i'm just saying what i think it looks like compared to other weapons i've seen before.

It's really not that much larger. Move your hand two inches higher up and you're balanced.

This has been debated quite a bit in other threads. The biggest problem is the length of the staff. It's waaaay to long for a saber staff. The other problem is the ends don't match, which kills the electro staff idea. To me it looks like it was re-purposed from junk. So It could have some hidden weapon it, but I think it's just a staff.

My guess is that Rey's weapon is a staff with a clubhead. She's a scavenger, and welded herself a weapon out of stuff she picked up. The staff has several bits and bobs that would be helpful if she wants to hang stuff off it, use it for support while climbing, or just as a simple ladder. They could also hide various features, like pop-out blades, compartments, etc., making it a Swiss army staff of sorts. It's a multi-purpose staff; that's my guess, and I don't think Rey needs a fantastical weapon to be interesting - rather the opposite! It would be cooler to see her excelling at stuff with a simple staff-club than having to rely on a new generation's super-weapon-toy-gadget, IMHO.

Of course, the staff could be any number of things, including an electro thing or a lightspear or whatever, but if so I think we would have seen it displayed that way in the toys and art already.

Also, there is not a balance problem in Rey's staff. You only have to compensate by moving your grip closer to the heavy end, and/or use a wide grip (instead of holding it near the center of the staff, which would be a silly way to fight with a bo anyway).

In summary, Rey's staff, as shown, seem to me to be a long club/heavy-ended staff.

I think it's just a staff, but, because of her proficiency with it, it may be indicative of the future.

If you are already a skilled fighter, you will probably incorporate new things you learn into your existing skill set. You know, like abilities with the Force and lighsaber... :D

Agreed it could come in handy when striking the starkiller base.

I agree that I doubt it's just a staff. There's got to be something to it, especially as Derth pointed out, having mechanical parts. I just hope it's something very cool .... some new thing we haven't seen before.

I fully agree. IF indeed Rey ends up as a forceuser of some sort, which I think most of us assume, then she should absolutely be able to incorporate her bo-techniques into her new fighting style. Even if she has to switch to swordfighting (i.e. use Luke's lightsaber or whatever), having a background in bo-fighting would be very useful when developing the new skills. And of course, as Star Wars is space mythology and has a penchant for elegant plots, it is more than likely that Rey will either, a) conveniently find a staff-saber/lightspear or whatever in a future movie, or b) take a lightsaber she inherits/builds and attach it to the end of her staff.

I´m in the band of "just a staff" and I would be unpleased if there´s more in it. Scavenger. Long time living on Jakku. No trees - no wooden staff. This one look metal and heavy, a junk from a ship or several different pieces attached together to make it longer, perhaps to do better balance.

This pretty much. The amount of people who have put me down for saying Snoke is Plagueis is ridiculous, i'll be howling with laughter if it turns out to be true.
