I've taken that image and highlighted the part of the staff that her saber appears to have been constructed from.
    Rey with Staff (Edit).jpg

The top of the image, looking from the top down, would be the hilt cap, and the bottom of the image would be the emitter assembly where the blade emerges from.

I know this is a business and they want to make sales off of people excited for the movie and shopping for Christmas presents; but it's kind of a shame that something like this wouldn't be in the VisDic. I assume it's solely because they couldn't spoil something like this before the movie comes out. Again, I understand the business aspect of it, but the book would only be a spoiler for what, a few weeks? And then from the time the movie comes out until forever, it's a less-useful item. :-\

.... I'm still going to buy it of course.

I thought about that when I made the thread title. That's why I didn't say Rey's NEW Lightsaber (figuring those who hadn't seen the film would just assume I was referring to Anikin/Luke's). But, the new title works just as well. :)

You may very well have a good point, but don't most force-users turn their sabers on and off with the force? Seems like they very rarely actually push the buttons, flip the switches, etc.

The Visual Dictionary doesn't contain information about Rey's new lightsaber because it is laid out in a very specific fashion and the section of it that mentions/focuses on her is geared primarily towards the things that happened to her previous to this film.

    No.

I really don't know where you got this notion from, but it has never been a 'thing' anywhere in Star Wars.

Think I made that assumption too. Think it comes from the fact that when I a Jedi is disarmed, as in the lightsaber knocked from their grip, the blade turns off... this could appear that it is the Jedi’s force keeping the blade on. I’ve never seen a saber fall to the ground and remained ignited. Seems it has an auto off function.

^ Ok. This idea would never have occurred to me and has never been explicitly depicted anywhere in the franchise's various onscreen installments, and so it caught me totally off-guard.

Yea, the more I think about it, any time you see a capable force user ignite a saber their fingers don't really move in any special way. It's only when they are just learning, or when a non force user ignites one, that you see them manipulate something manually.

Here is a time when the saber user definitely did not physically push any buttons to active the saber...

Ben did push a button to activate that saber; he just did so with his mind.

I thought the same as well. I never see a press of a button or the flick 0f a switch. I mean, if these guys can do other crazy stuff they do with the force? Surely they can flip a switch on a hilt. Use Maul for example when he extends his arm to light his saber saber in TPM in the hangar scene. He ignites the blade and one end lights up and then the other a couple seconds later. I don't recall him pushing anything.

Yes, I concur. Or at least activating whatever internal mechanism pushing the button would.

Pretty sure you can see his finger subtly push a button. Notice the left index finger.

Sure looks like you're right. I wonder what she did with the rest of the staff? Does she attach the hilt to the staff to disguise it? Did she make multiple lightsabers? I hope they make a replica of it, and Leia's lightsaber too.

^ She probably discarded or otherwise used the parts of the staff that she didn't need for the saber.

I think it was fitting that her staff is turned into her unique lightsaber.

My brain calls the color gold which I guess is a fancy name for yellow? The blade is like a golden ray of sunlight springing from within a black hilt. It's a perfect symbol of hope springing from within darkness. It's a perfect symbol of Rey. The light in the darkness - the Skywalker in the Palpatine. That final scene is so great.

    Excellent thoughts.

    Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
    And everything you do
    Yeah they were all yellow
