As soon as it was announced that Rian Johnson would get to have his own standalone trilogy of Star Wars movies after he completed work on The Last Jedi, many fans have been hoping that we would be getting an adaptation of Knights of the Old Republic. Well, KOTOR fans, prepare for some bad news - that won't be happening.

Johnson recently spoke with Mashable at a press event for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Johnson recognized that fans would be in love with the idea of an Old Republic Era Trilogy, but he ultimately explained that this was not the story he wanted to tell:

This development honestly does not surprise me. As it stands, the original press release stated that the story that they would be telling would be one covering an era and location that we've never seen in Star Wars history. Furthermore, BioWare and EA are still generating content for their MMORPG, The Old Republic, which is more or less its own alternate continuity at this point; making a work based on a 'canon' version of this era while the game is still being updated would create a lot of needless brand confusion. I think it's more important that Lucasfilm ends up expanding the scope of where this franchise goes instead of just dwelling on an era where we already know the essentials about what happened. That's not to say that I dislike the idea of Old Republic Era stories, but I'm more interested in where they're taking Star Wars going forward, especially if it's something completely new.

I thought I wanted this trilogy to be Old Republic, but now that we know it's not, I honestly feel a little relieved. Why spend this opportunity (and all of Johnson's storytelling skill) in a place we've already explored?

I want to see Old Republic done and done well in the new canon, maybe through a live action series. But I like that they're really going for something new with this trilogy.

This is very sad news, but I'm sure his trilogy will still be good whatever it is.

He alludes specifically to the games. It was more than obvious that he won't play in that existing sandbox. His trilogy could take place in a similar time period. IMO it would be better if he went even further back. To the very early days of the Jedi (Rian is already touching on it in TLJ). In KotOR Jedi were already pretty... corporate. :) So the earlier stages of their evolution are still a great unknown even if we take into account the non-canon games.

    Agreed.
I'm no gamer and not familiar with the story TOR game tells but it Does tell a story (as does BFII).
    Tell me a Story I Don't Know.
...and that's what we're gonna Get.
    Good. :)

It makes sense since the Bioware universe decanonized itself and games don't necessarily make good movies, different storytelling. In order to gain more freedom to tell their story they can ignore Kotor and make their own thing even in that time frame.

Right, but the new canon has referenced stuff like The Mandalorian Wars and Malachor. The fact that it's decanonized is a good thing- they can use the Old Republic setting without being tied to the Revan story that we already know.

    Star Wars fans are funny.
    "TFA is just a rehash"
"I can't believe it's not the Old Republic!"

Anyone else seeing this as super duper funny?

If TLJ turns out as good as I'm hoping it will be, then I will be really stoked about the new trilogy.

I've been hearing this a lot, but I don't really understand. We have seen no canon Old Republic stuff. KOTOR doesn't count and it would be a terrible idea to make a movie out of those games anyway. Rian could set his trilogy in the Old Republic and would have 100% freedom to create any story he wants. In fact, he would have more freedom than setting it in the PT, OT, or SQ era. The Old Republic seems like an era that is so ready to be explored.

Yeah this happens with almost any fandom. Reality is there are different groups who want different things. But people are much more likely to speak up to complain than they are to support. So basically, whenever ANYTHING happens, lots of people complain. We humans are terrible.

Of course it does. But unlike Star Wars, huge segments of the fanbase for most other things dont start turning their nose up to it even if it's actually good just because it isn't what they wanted.
Batman 89 did very little new or different with the character. same with Batman TAS. But they were incredibly well done and people loved them for it.

Star Wars fans want new but the same. Similar but not too similar. It's a lose-lose conquest.

Im not even saying it as a bad thing. Star Wars fans are just so wildly passionate and unbelievably stubborn about what they see as "their" Star Wars.

Yeah that's the thing about the Jedi that in my opinion the PT and even KOTOR got "wrong". Since I was a kid hearing Ben speak of the Old Republic, I have imagined it more like feudal Japan or even dynastic China (or both). In my mind there would be orders of Jedi in their temples/monastaries and others who serve feudal lords directly. Others would wander like ronin, serving who they choose and doing right. I have never fully reconciled myself to the official depiction of the Old Republic. If Rian or somebody else went even further back, maybe I could something like that. Please?

I go as far to say they should be careful what they wish for. I can't see oh a totally "original" Star Wars would still be SW they know, you need to quote familiar elements.
That's why I often ask what is original and the answers are more or less rip offs itself.

This is true. We Star Wars love Star Wars in so many different ways. Some people love the lightsabers and spaceships. Some people love the dialog. Some love the character development. Then when one group says "I didn't like x about this movie", the other groups accuse them of being haters. But again, I don't think we are that different from any other fandom.

Just a little reminder Kotor was created to avoid using the expensive OT license or the unreachable Prequel license, I'm talking about license because LFL wasn't producing anything, they just sold the brand badge to content creators, unlike now.
If you want an impression about the Old Republic and the stories that cold work their I recommend Tales of the Jedi, around the early 90s. That was pretty fun stuff and laid the groundwork for the setting.

Yep. I've long stood by the notion that Star Wars fans want a wholly original Star Wars...until they get one.

Fans would be so turned off by a truly auteur Star Wars film because it would basically discard everything that we know as "Star Wars"
Would anyone really want that? Maybe an incredibly small number of people but that seems counter intuitive to Star Wars.

I think that's where so many franchises fall apart. They narrow their scope too much.
WB/DC messed up giving Zack Snyder who, though talented, is a very auteur director and his sense and style supersedes just about everything else in those movies.
The Alien franchise handed off the baton smartly to James Cameron who made a fun bigger badder sequel but then went full auteur in the following films and the appeal of them dwindled to like, a quarter of the people who liked Alien and Aliens.

Star Wars thrives because it can appease broad appeal (films and TV) and also the more die hard nuanced fan (books, games etc).

It would be silly to ultimately upset that by going hard in any direction for an "original" take, which is what you'd have to do. You need a guy who can make a broad appeal film, even if it means sacrificing some of his own vision or style markers.

I don't think we're different than other fandoms in the sense of we are all passionate. I just think Star Wars is the second most stubborn fandom behind Star Trek.

It's two years later and some people still can't get over what amounts to trivial things to just enjoy The Force Awakens.

I am one hundred percent okay with this. I love KOTOR. If anyone knows me, the storyline for the first game is masterful and really that game made me a diehard SWs fan for life. Heck, I daresay KOTOR is the magnum opus of the franchise in my view, as it managed to surpass both trilogies for me in terms of storytelling. That said, I'm glad that Rian appreciates the allure of those games and wishes to bridge out.

I can understand him not being shackled by the concept. And yeah, I have heard plenty of people say "But he doesn't have to copy it. Or he could go his own route with it." But I question could he really? We have plenty of fans who are Legends fan who already aren't fans of the NC. And yeah, you cannot please everyone: that is a fact of life.

But going in a radically different direction: that is exactly what KOTOR so good. And really, my hope is that Rian takes the spirit of KOTOR and Legends and just forges his own path. Because, to get personal: Rian is an INCREDIBLE world builder. Seriously, go watch Brick and even Looper. If you told me that a noir mystery story in high school would have worked; I would have laughed in your face.

But Rian made it work. And thus, I look forward to see what he does in a Galaxy Far Far Away. Hopefully, something to the extent of his past works.

Well they did say Rian was going to have a "blank canvas", and the last time I checked the Old Republic era within the new canon already has established events and characters that were mentioned in The Clone Wars and Rebels. Thus the likelihood of it ever being Old Republic in the first place was kind of slim to none.

However, I don't think LucasFilm will leave that era untouched, as I imagine at some point we'll probably see a videogame, comic, or possibly even a show (animated or otherwise) that will address this time period of Star Wars within the new canon.

LOL. Yeah, a lot of SWs fans that I find act like utter children. They say one thing and then say another. I'm in the camp who didn't like TFA and while I wanted something else, Legends much as I loved it; I was fine without them using. Same with KOTR and TOR. Cool eras, but I'd like to see something cool.

As I said, Rian has an amazing ability to develop a world. Looper is a perfect example of a dark scifi world that isn't ripping off Blade Runner and very much felt like its own unique thing. Same with Brick. Bring that to SWs please.
