Glad that the project of this new trilogy is on pre-production (story).
The fans of TLJ can't wait to see what RJ will do with this "New SW".

The only way Rian Johnson can write a good movie narrative is to be "free" from someone else's previous work? He might as well claim that he did a terrible job with "The Last Jedi". Which he did, as far as I'm concerned.

Well count me in as one of those who's excited for this. Although I do wonder how it'll play out alongside Benioff & Weiss's series. Initially it was announced to be separate from Johnson's trilogy, but I wonder if it might end up getting merged into one series that all three of them are working on together.

Keep in mind, if his trilogy is cancelled I don't believe he will have much freedom at all. Let's wait to see some progress with his trilogy making it to production before we assume it's even going to happen; it's very possible that it won't.

After IX, this is probably the project I am most excited to see come to fruition. Really can't even begin to imagine what Johnson will do with a blank drawing board.

    Okay.

The freedom part is more a comment about doing stories not tied to the Skywalker Saga. So that's gonna be part of the process no matter who is creating the story.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rian Johnson simply walked away from Star Wars after the constant abuse he's taken for two years for making a film the overwhelming majority of people liked. His twitter mentions are full of trolls. He had to close his instragram comments. How is Lucasfilm ever going to keep around gifted story tellers if people behave like morons? David Fincher and Christopher McQuarrie have both expressed that they would never touch the IP because of it.

^I hope Johnson does stick around, although yeah, I wouldn't blame him if he did walk away. And indeed, as much as I love Star Wars, I myself would never want anything to do with creating installments for the franchise, not the least of which because of how volatile the fanbase can be.

What's make me sad is that Rian Johnson delivered one of the best SW so far and people are still attacking him online.
I don't like the prequels but I would never attack or be rude to George Lucas.

The overwhelming majority of people do not like this film. You can go to Amazon through verified purchase reviews and see that 39% of people gave it 5 stars, and 35% gave it 1 star, with the rest somewhere in between. This is the most accurate data we have on people's view of TLJ. Roughly 50% of people giving it 1 or 2 stars does not mean that the majority of people like it.

I highly doubt Johnson would just walk away, that would seem like an excuse and he'd miss out on a good paycheck.

With all due respect, calling Amazon verified purchases the best data available is simply not true. There's no sense in arguing about this publicly since I approached you with the data privately. If you want to ignore the data that's fine, but let's just agree to disagree. There's no sense in arguing about this if there's no agreement in what constitutes scientific data samples.

I don't want to drag this off any further topic.
It's this same kind of sick behavior that soured George when it came to making more films. I was disappointed with the PT, but I only have the upmost respect for Lucas. Attacking him and other creatives online is sickening.

The issue with the samples you provided is that a single poll taken in December of 2017 is drastically different from a mass audience review nearly two years later. Had someone asked me immediately after I saw the film in theaters I probably would have told them I liked it at that point in time - I was very confused. I think Amazon is a very credible source, with the success of brands and products often relying on reviews to support their sales. Users with verified reviews must have confirmed their purchase. I don't know why this should be ignored.

As I mentioned previously, the box office performance of TROS and whether or not Johnson gets his trilogy will determine the impact his film has had on the future and success of the franchise.

    Just some random thoughts...

I for one am really excited to see what RJ might do with his future Star Wars project.

It’s interesting that some people who liked TLJ then later changed their minds. Which of course they have every right to. But should Disney base their decisions on people who change their minds or on people who were consistent with their opinions all along? Genuinely asking... (even if I will concede it’s obviously a loaded question from someone who loved TLJ and thinks Rian Johnson is insanely talented!! ;) ).

In the end though, people who didn’t like TLJ are free to skip any future RJ Star Wars films, or they can give it a try when it shows up on Disney+ for no extra fee, where they can either be pleasantly surprised or else have their low opinion of the guy’s abilities confirmed. I think there are more than enough fans to make the films viable and I feel like those apparently yearning for his trilogy to be cancelled because they didn’t like TLJ are of course entitled to their opinions but to me it just feels a little mean-spirited towards those who loved Episode VIII.

I think if you hold RJ’s Star Wars in low regard, the best thing you can do to avoid that kind of thing is praise, promote, pay and watch everything you love in Star Wars rather than spend time on being negative towards that which you dislike. It’ll likely be a happier time for you, and it’ll contribute to a picture of what fandom actively wants rather than what it doesn’t want, which is going to be much more useful at convincing Lucasfilm/Disney where money is to be made, rather than where money is not going to be made, if you catch my meaning.

May the Force be with you all, always.

Off topic. I hate how a lot things good or bad in the ST all get pointed at Johnson. Like or dislike it and move on. The fandom has a divide in it. I don't care about the numbers, I care about what it means to each one of us. The are a ton of other directors who have made movies that are loved and hated as much but don't here fans whining at them every second. I think if we weren't so divide on this and felt like we instantly had to on the defense it would be a lot better for us as a whole.

I am interested in seeing if this pans out, he has other good movies. So with some freedom and time it could be good. If he picks some side characters and brings them to the big screen he could pull off a Guardians here. I will wait and see.

Why should anyone? For your benefit? Just as I have to contend with the constant negative comments about the Prequel Trilogy, you will simply have to contend with the negative comments about Johnson and his impact in "The Last Jedi". We all have our crosses to bear.

Oh there is problems with all of them including the OT. The point I was making it has just become a kindergarten fight. I am totally ok having a discussion with anyone about their dislikes of the ST but when it becomes petty, I am done. The PT got slammed hard I don't disagree there, It could just be me open dialog versus name calling or hackling up seems a much better way to have a conversation. I am totally ok with you or anyone PMing me on this. As fans we can continue or we can come back together. But this is not the topic of this thread so I am done with this here.

Perhaps we could all treat Star Wars like just some films that some like and others don't? Instead of, I dunno... warring religions?

Do you love the PT? Great!
Do you love the OT? Great!
Do you love the ST? Great!
Do you dislike, or even hate some of it? All right, you may do so if you wish, and argue your points of disfavor where that is appropriate (although hopefully not cirularly, 'cause that poodo is tiering as hellion), but you are not in your right to troll places where people discuss things they love, are excited about, or have high hopes for.

Discussing what you percieve to be narrative faults and filmcraft weakensses in arenas made for such is acceptable and probably even healthy, but jumping at the oportunity to enter a new thread solelly to fling poodo is very friggin' far from it. And hiding behind a "but everyone else is doing it" excuse is even worse. So, yeah...

    ...and here comes the reds.

There's a great interview in Uproxx with Rian Johnson about Knives Out. I skipped most of this b/c I'm trying to avoid Knives Out spoilers, but there's some Star Wars questions at the end.

Your upcoming Star Wars movies, how do they end?

[Laughs] I’ll tell you exactly how they end! An iris shot to a blue credit.

So, look, I realize how guarded you are about your upcoming Star Wars movies, but do you know exactly what they are yet? When they are set. Exactly what it will be?

I’m where I can’t say anything about it. Still completely in process with it.

Does that ruin your process if you say anything?

It’s just, I don’t know. “It’s a process” means it’s a process. So that means it could change, it could shift. There are a bunch of moving parts with it.

So say three years ago if I asked that same question about Knives Out would it have been the same answer?

I probably would have given you some answer and then it would’ve been totally different from the movie that came out. You know, it’s something that you write and you work on.

Look, my main goal here is to have people start tweeting at you again.

[Laughs] That’s not how this works.
