Star Wars fans should hope The Rise of Skywalker is a good film. Not just because we're Star Wars fans, but because if the movie is bad Disney is will shy away from "new" and steer Star Wars towards the Lion King. The new Lion King and essentially all of those animated films are soulless nostalgia cash grabs. They're not bad films, but there's very little inspiring about it.

I loved The Force Awakens and I adored The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson was the first Star Wars film since the prequel trilogy that felt like it pushed Star Wars into a new area. Rogue One/TFA were pretty much more of the same. More of the same is sometimes fine, but this entire IP will drift into mediocrity if it becomes stand alone films about Darth Vader/Luke/Yoda. Those films will make money, but they'll be made by safe directors who are just part of the machine.

Even if you didn't like TLJ, we should be very afraid of the toxic minority harassing talented people away.

Very afraid. What we dont want is people taking over that are willing to turn the films into a conveyor belt of films with decreasing creativity.

RJ is not the only arbiter of the creativity that is possible in the SW universe. I could go into a 2 page long list of creatively inept choices that were made and how in my opinion TLJ is just a bad movie. I liked Looper and I liked his episodes of Breaking Bad and I really wanted to like TLJ. I even pretended to myself that I actually liked it after the first viewing. Upon viewing it a second time with the rest of family it became painfully clear and undeniable to myself that again in my opinion this was just a bad movie. He doesn’t deserve his own trilogy. I could suggest several good replacements already working within Disney/LFL that I would place more trust in coming up with an interesting, compelling and yes a creative new trilogy than RJ. The B & W selection also seems like a big mistake given the disastrous plummet of GoT the last 2 seasons. LFL/Disney seem to be in damage control mode after several bad choices that seemed more based on KKs personal agenda and what seemed to be the new hot ticket in town. Now they seem to be realizing their mistakes and wanting to correct the trajectory of SW.

I wonder, would RJ even want to make another SW film? Especially if Knives Out will be well recieved by viewers and make (enough) money. Rian is good filmmaker, who deserves better audience, than the permanently pissed-off "fans", prone to constant complaining and personal attacks.

ironically, i think they found someone who loves the franchise more than air and actually isn't all that bothered by that negative faction of the fandom.

what other director would put up with so much abuse?
this really is the quandary of it all: the fans drive away talent and then complain about not getting good quality.

bless the souls of every one of the intrepid folks who signed on for the ST at the outset knowing full well it could be a career-killer for them.

Remember Christopher McQuarrie has already been driven away.

I get it some people dont like it. I dont care about that, still we dont want to chase away quality filmmakers. You can love a bad movie and hate a great movie. In my opinion TLJ is a great movie and even more importantly RJ is an awesome filmmaker. I see so many people that didnt like it online and they went from not liking it to trying to make people that really liked it or loved it not like it. Lets not chase talent away, lets not chase fans away.

Here's the thing... It's perfectly fine you don't like the film. I don't care that you don't like it. However, who made Travcon the arbiter of the creativity? You're just another person on the internet with an opinion. Just like me.

This is the stuff that confounds me. These keyboard Stanley Kubricks are so annoying. Rian Johnson has proven himself outside of Star Wars. If you don't like the film that's fine, this "the film is objectively bad" people need to get a grip.
This also happened to George Lucas. I didn't like the prequels, but he didn't deserve the way he was treated. To be fair these films aren't that complicated. This isn't Taxi Driver or There Will Be Blood. The way some people discusses these films is moronic.

Lets not also forget that the the 2 page long list of creatively inept choices were totally missed by the story group, producers, and other people working on the film. What we need is some of these "keyboard Stanley Kubricks" to get on flights and head to Skywalker Ranch and start writing.

Thanks, I can say the same thing about the whole it is a bad movie comment and you could come up with 2 pages of creatively inept choices that RJ and the whole creative team made. I get it. TLJ is not your cup of tea. That does not make it a bad movie or the choices creatively inept. I am 100% willing to say I feel bad for you. I really, really feel tremendously sad for you.

I guess the group of decision makers that are making the call to let RJ’s trilogy die are making just as valid a choice and should not be questioned either.

And I am happy to know the bar is, if you cannot produce something superior you have no right to an opinion.

Please spare me the disingenuous concern.

I love Star Wars warts and all, but I'm not gonna pretend I'm expert at film-making. There's plenty of filmmakers out there that aren't my cup of tea. Rian Johnson isn't getting fired by Lucasfilm. He may not end up doing another Star Wars project but it's pretty clear Lucasfilm loves him. It's a shame that a few of the people who don't like TLJ have decided to make whether or not Johnson makes another Star Wars film a referendum on The Last Jedi. It's silly. There was a referendum on The Last Jedi back in 2017. It was a hit by any conceivable measure. It's been two years and I can't believe people are still crying about it.

Those of us who love Star Wars shouldn't be bitching and moaning. If you don't like something move on with your lives and wait for something that's more aligned to your interest. No one is going to make content to appease an angry mob.

I just saw this in Vanity Fair.

Kennedy doesn't sound like she's going anywhere soon and the people around her are all pretty tight with Lucasfilm.

We need balance. Perhaps every other film could like the TLJ (deeply philosophical and pushing the franchise forward) and in between TLJ type films have more TFA films that stick to the expected and tried and true formula. There is a franchise that has done this successfully, it eludes me at the moment, but every other film is deep and pushes the franchise forward, while the rest stays with the tried and true formula.

I might despise The Last Jedi, but I for one would be like a pig in blast if TROS is a bad ass film. There is no way in hell I want it to flop. None. I can only speak for myself of course, but I think any and all Star Wars fans want that.

As for the toxicity, I don't think Rian Johnson gives a hoot about it. I think he loves the attention and gives back as good as he gets.

I agree to some extent with this, but really fans should hold their feet to the fire. I used to joke they could put out crap and slap the Star Wars logo on it and I'd love it. The reality is that we SHOULD expect better (and yes I know, I know, the "critics" loved the film), and if a fan doesn't like what they do with a particular character or with something that breaks the "rules of the universe" then hell yeah, speak up.

Anyway, I really do hope IX is awesome. I guess we will be finding out in what, 2 months?

    Well said DarthPlunge.

I for one have no qualms with those who despise TLJ, they should be allowed their ire and voice. Long as we who like TLJ have a voice as well.

Tension and disagreement make life interesting and exciting.

I think you should also exercise caution in using the word toxic. Differing opinions these days are becoming a little too black and white. Of course there are extreme views on any topic which aren't healthy, but it's almost as if we all have to pick a team now and view the other side as completely evil. The middle ground seems to have disappeared.

This toxicity exists whether you like it or not. Go to YouTube. Those toxic channels are popular enough for the morons to make money off feeding the mob. In the grand scheme of things they're still a very small minority, but they're an online mob that harasses anyone who disagrees with their toxic fandom.
