Rian Johnson says fans haven't 'nailed the big stuff' yet.

It's marketing like this which makes me ill & wanting 2 leave the Franchise.

I was going to make a thread a few days ago about the confidence Lucasfilm/Rian/the cast seem to have about the unexpectedness of the story. I was going to use a specific quote from John Boyega from the BTS reel about how TLJ goes in a much different direction to what the fans were expecting after TFA. That's a very bold claim to make. Obviously it could all just be a marketing ploy but I don't think they're blind or deaf to all the speculation that surrounds these films. I was going to raise the question, "What do they think we think is going happen?" It isn't like a redemption for Kylo or a turn for Rey are little minor theories, they're overwhelmingly popular in the Star Wars fan community. In fact, I don't know if it's even fair to call them theories, they're more like expectations because of what happens in the previous two trilogies. It's a classic Star Wars trope.

Now granted, that was back in July before marketing really started to kick into high gear... but now here we are, a little over a week from release and just days away from the premiere, and according to the writer and director, we still haven't cracked the case (not that he would tell us if we did). Who knows, maybe we've been barking up the wrong trees this whole time.

 

This is a little off topic but it's always wild to me how much the conversations change after a movie comes out. The whole conversation changes after Dec. 14.... I'm so excited to watch the movie and say to myself "I've never thought of that." or "I never read any theory about that." I really feel like the whole promotion of the film was one giant misdirection so the film has a lot of room to surprise us.

 

Nah. If that were the case, whatever the twist is would be so off the wall it would be silly/deployed simply to shock.
RJ said that the twists suit the story and going by the other claim that he pushed the characters to their limits and made the story not go the way we think, my guess is that we have indeed guessed right along the line somewhere. If I had to guess, I'd say the closest theories will be centred around:

- ReyLo
- Kylo not having actually destroyed the Temple
- Rey not being related
- Luke being a mess/The Jedi way being flipped on its head
- The Resistance being painted in similar light to the FO

I think RJ is likely referring to the theories that are common amongst both hardcore and general fans - Rey Skywalker/Solo, Luke being bad, Rey going dark, Snoke...gulp...being Plagueis.

 

I agree to an extent, though I think there's gonna be something/things none of us have foreseen. Even if we had everything and just not the specifics, I don't think Rian would say we haven't "nailed the big stuff yet". He'd hit us with something like, "Oh I haven't paid attention to the fan theories in a while so I don't know".

 

True. There is likely a big revelation to take place that we couldn't possibly have predicted (in great numbers) as it could be something new - as in not hinted at in TFA (characters, events). I just can't believe that the majority of the big stuff hasn't been spoken about in great length somewhere along the line. I guess the truth is though that no one will have correctly mapped out the film in detail, that includes all the big theories? Really though, I think he's just trying to keep the hype train moving!

 

In the sense that it's unbelievable that anyone could possible think it a likely theory...yes.

Nailed is relative. And he is too busy to be aware of everything that everyone has theorized. Nailed probably means guessing correctly with explanation. For example if Rey is a Skywalker EVERYONE has guessed that but explaining how that could be true? It's entirely possible nobody ( whose theory has gone viral) has figured that out. Which would mean no one has nailed it. Some or all of us might be in the ballpark, but to nail it you would need to have gotten close on the how or why the theory is accurate. Rey random would be even harder to nail so I think what he says likely increases slightly (IMO) the possibility of that.
