That's an excellent news. This makes a lot of sense : you neeed a significant gap (10 + years) between EP IX and the next trilogy (if a new trilogy is even planned).

In the meantime, there's no way we could survive on anthology movies alone. So, we need something more substantial for the next ten years.
Besides, i'm also thrilled to hear we're getting into new territories. Recent SW films relied a bit too much on nostalgia, so it's time to get out of the comfort zone.

So you would rather they make movies now that are already boxed in to avoid potentially boxing in future installments? They need to make all the movies feel like they have weight. If they treat everything that isn't part of the Skywalkers Saga like a back-story or a filler movie, it won't be long before audiences stop thinking they matter.

I was starting to worry that Lucasfilm was stuck exploring already discovered territory. The announcement of this new trilogy gives me a lot of hope.

It's no different than a movie on WW2.
It won't be seen as backstory or filler if it's a good story.

I'm saying if they aren't done with the MAIN story, don't box that in. I literally say that in the post.
And if you go all the way back to the Old Republic, you aren't boxed in at all.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME???!!! Just woke up to this news and I can't contain myself. For a brief moment I literally thought I'm still dreaming. This is probably the best and the most exciting film news I've heard since the Ep VII announcement. This is just insaaaaaaaane.

By doing this Lucasfilm confirms TLJ is 10/10 according to them. Super smart marketing move and it'll be so nice to know for sure that TLJ is not Rian's final word in SW when watching it in December. It's also extremely reassuring to know he had a good enough time making TLJ to go back immediately for such a gigantic undertaking.

That said, this announcement could turn out painfully premature if we're not going to hear anything about this until IX is out. Sorry, Obi-Wan, but I wouldn't be mad at all if LFL ditched all the spin-off plans in favour of this.

I really think this could be some kind of Old Republic stuff (obviously completely unrelated to Legends). This is the cleanest canvas Rian could possibly get and the natural place to go if they're to do something Skywalker-free but still essential to the overarching mythology. If this is a trilogy, I think it's unlikely it won't be centred around Force users. So the time before TPM is the biggest playground available. Personally I've never been a huge KotOR-type movie advocate, but having Rian as the main creator is a real gamechanger.

    Wow, wow, wow...

Thinking about it, this is all kind of coming out fast. Wasn't it just last week on the Star Wars show where Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that they were just in talking about the next 10 years of Star Wars? I understand that they won't wanna talk about it till after TLJ and maybe even after Han Solo, but I hope we don't go a huge stretch before we get to find out what era of Star Wars that they are talking about.

It could still be in the past though...Old Republic territory. But that would probably take us back to Jedi. vs Sith. Maybe pre-Rule of Two era. I personally think it's 50:50 as to whether it is set in the future or the past of the current Saga.

But from Kathleen Kennedy's statement the "where" is more important than "when"

I only know one thing.............that the Last Jedi received rave reviews by critics and test audiences alike.

My guess is that the following will happen:

    * The TV-series will be called "The New Order" and will feature the events of the build up of a new Jedi order after episode IX. It will be 'sequel era' and will fit in nicely with Disney's new Star Wars theme park environment. Our heroes from the sequels, and possibly villains, will have cameos but the narrative will be framed around a new group of young people, Jedi and non-Jedi alike.

    * The new trilogy will be set a long time before the episodes of the Skywalker saga. The goal is to creative narrative space for RJ to form a story with new characters, themes and settings but still be able to provide the Skywalker saga substance even though the connections will be comparatively small.

Well apparently, the test audience (critics, fans and neutrals alike) loves The Last Jedi, otherwise they'd never even dare to make such a move before the movie releases. And as for the divisive nature, in the age of the internet, the appearance will always be that a movie is divisive because only the people who have something to complain will take effort to post their opinions on the internet. The Force Awakens has got a 90% approval rating amongst viewers and critics, yet still some people, especially that 10% who hated it, claim the movie was 'divisive'. The movie that really was divisive was ROTS if you look at the numbers.

Great news but I really think KK should have waited until after the release of TLJ because if TLJ doesn't do what they think it will things will change... I want an Old Republic trilogy so I hope TLJ is well received.

I think it should play out before the PT, all new characters, but use some of the same location that was in all three trilogies, like Corousant, Tatooine etc. Maybe include some locations that we only know by name, Taanab, Sullust (I know it's in Battlefront) for example.

it's always been a dream/fantasy that i would see a live action trilogy based on the old republic.. to see early Jedi learning the force and going through the trials. to see a Sith academy brimming with blood thirsty hopefuls.. cheating and murdering their way to the top.

    it's a dream, and i'm hopeful.

saying that... i'm not sure that would be the 'blank canvas' mentioned in the release.
i would be equally excited to go 1000 years ahead and into a different part of the galaxy.

crap.. i don't care. new star wars is new star wars.. is new star wars. #abouttopop

i have a very good feeling about this !

    YES.

I predicted this about a time ago, because I knew there was no way in hell Lucasfilm would continue making Episodes set after IX so soon, and also they know they'd have to make something more original to keep the series fresh. That is to say, they know they can't continue make too many movies like Rogue One and Solo set between 3-4.

So, it seems many people are convinced that the new trilogy will be set between ROTJ and TFA. I'm sorry, but this won't happen. First of all, there's nothing particulary interesting about this time period unless you're focusing on the big 3, which obviously won't happen in this case (No Skywalkers). Secondly, a story about Imperial remnants in another corner of the galaxy is already being done in Battlefront II's campaign mode. Third, a trilogy about the Knights of Ren is probably JJ's thing, and there's too little story material to fit into one whole trilogy (I mean, what are they gonna do? What's the point?). And fourth, a trilogy focusing on something entirely different in this time period (for example a civil war on a distant planet) is just too far-fetched to the point where it doesn't make sense to have it take place between ROTJ and TFA anyway, since it could fit into any era.

Let's just look at basic logic:

    - No Skywalkers
    - New era with new lore that hasn't been explored before

Following basic logic, which era is the only era that is 100% safe from Skywalkers? That's right, anything taking place prior to TPM. And in the new Disney-canon, which era hasn't been explored? That's right, the Old Republic era. And how could they implement this era with new lore that hasn't been explored before? That's right, Snoke and the Chosen One prophecy.

That being said, I already had everything figured out before, and I will be happy to prove myself right a couple of years later. Rian Johnson's trilogy is obviously going to take place around 1000 years prior to TPM and feature characters such as Snoke and Yoda, and a great war between the Sith and the Jedi. It will explore the Chosen One prophecy which was hinted at in the prequels, but never further explored. Disney is building a cinematic universe and this is how they're going to connect all the sagas.
